After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 1
Ji Fanghuai had amnesia.
The dampness on her body woke her from a deep sleep, but her mind was completely empty. Her body felt as heavy as if it had been filled with lead, and the woman wiping her body in front of her was completely unfamiliar.
“Who am I? And who are you?”
Ji Fanghuai heard herself utter this absurd question in a hoarse voice.
The woman was initially happy about her waking up, but her action of holding the towel suddenly paused at the question, and surprise and worry flashed in her eyes.
Ji Fanghuai saw the woman remain silent for a long time, and just as she was about to ask again, she heard her say firmly: “Your name is Ji Fanghuai, and I am your fiancée, Jiang Zhi.”
Fiancée?
She was gay.
Ji Fanghuai had thought this cold-looking yet attentive woman might be her sister or best friend, but she never imagined a fiancée.
Ji Fanghuai moved her lips but couldn’t find anything to say, silently watching her fiancée wringing out the towel.
The thought of having just been nakedly wiped down made her face flush with heat.
The woman was slender and well-proportioned, a natural clothes rack. Her collarbones were smooth beneath her white shirt, and her cropped trousers accentuated her long legs. Her long, dark curly hair had a certain allure, yet her features were almost cold.
A pair of gold-rimmed glasses rested on her delicate face, making her look like a movie star—flawless from every angle.
Ji Fanghuai tried hard to search her mind for someone who matched this description, but due to her amnesia, she couldn’t find this person at all, and she felt genuinely sorry.
“I’m sorry, Miss Jiang, I’ve forgotten you.”
Jiang Zhi paused while covering Ji Fanghuai with the blanket, seeming dissatisfied with the title, and then gently said, “You shouldn’t talk too much right now, you’ve just woken up.”
“Mhm, I want to sleep.” Ji Fanghuai said softly. Her head was getting heavier, and she drifted off to sleep only hearing a faint “Okay” near her ear.
Jiang Zhi put away the bathing items and stood by the bedside, looking at the thin face on the bed. She raised her hand several times, wanting to stroke it, but reluctantly brought it back down each time.
In the attending doctor’s office.
“Miss Jiang, this is Miss Ji’s physical examination report. Based on your description, we can preliminarily conclude that the amnesia is localized, caused by pressure on the cranial nerves. As for any other symptoms, we will have to wait until Miss Ji wakes up again to make a final judgment.”
“Will she recover?” Jiang Zhi was unusually calm.
“We don’t know yet. The brain is the most complex organ in the human body, and medical research on it is still in its initial stages. We cannot make any guarantees.”
Jiang Zhi held the examination report, deep in thought.
As her periods of consciousness gradually increased, and after being subjected to rounds of questioning by doctors, Ji Fanghuai learned that she had suffered a severe head injury and had recently undergone craniotomy surgery, having just been transferred out of the ICU.
Her right arm was in a cast, rendering it immobile, like the sole survivor of a car wreck.
As for why she was injured, she had no memory, no impression whatsoever.
Even though her fiancée, who knew the truth, was by her side, Ji Fanghuai didn’t dare to ask. The embarrassment of having forgotten her fiancée made her prefer to stay asleep rather than face the situation.
Because whenever she looked into Jiang Zhi’s concerned eyes, she didn’t know how to talk to her.
She felt more like a stranger than a fiancée.
“Fanghuai.”
A cool hand touched her forehead. Ji Fanghuai continued to pretend to sleep, but then felt a shallow breath graze her forehead, and two soft lips pressed against it.
Ji Fanghuai held her breath. After the soft touch on her forehead left, she “slept” for another half an hour before finally waking up leisurely.
“Fanghuai, it’s time to take your medicine.” Jiang Zhi held two white pills in her hand.
Ji Fanghuai’s face dropped, but she ultimately nodded and accepted the pills, swallowing them with the water handed by Jiang Zhi as if going to her death.
A bitter taste quickly spread through her mouth, and Ji Fanghuai’s expression grew worse.
A long, fair hand appeared before her, its clearly defined palm holding two circular candies.
“Mint candies.” Jiang Zhi waited for her to take them, like feeding a pet. Ji Fanghuai sheepishly took one and placed it in her mouth.
The bitterness faded, replaced by a refreshing mint flavor that swept through her mouth. Ji Fanghuai felt too awkward to pretend to sleep anymore and began chatting casually with her unfamiliar fiancée.
“When can I probably be discharged?” Ji Fanghuai looked at Jiang Zhi. “I don’t like staying in the hospital.”
She was staying in a high-class VIP ward; the room was spacious and bright, and there was no one else, but it was generally dreary.
The smell of disinfectant, the white bedding—even though she had been unconscious these past few days, she knew that doctors and nurses came daily to check her head.
She didn’t like any of it.
“You were only transferred out of the ICU a week ago, and you’ve been sleeping most of the time. If things improve, you might be discharged after resting for about another month.” Jiang Zhi lowered the head of the bed a little to make it easier for her to lie down.
Ji Fanghuai was eager to be discharged, but she couldn’t risk her health. She instantly looked wilted, like a morning glory ravaged by a storm.
“Be good, time passes quickly.” Jiang Zhi coaxed her like a child.
Ji Fanghuai ignored her, lying helplessly on the bed. There was no entertainment in the hospital, and no familiar faces. Lying down, she couldn’t even find a distraction.
Fortunately, she was extremely sleepy these days, spending most of her time asleep, as if she had never gotten out of bed.
A terrifying question popped into her mind: If she had never gotten out of bed, how were her biological needs met?
Ji Fanghuai turned her head to look at the immaculately dressed Jiang Zhi, her face flushed as if a fiery cloud had passed over it. She wished she could just sleep forever and never wake up.
“Why is your face so red? Do you have a fever?” Jiang Zhi’s cool hand felt her forehead again, preparing to reach for the thermometer.
“No.” Ji Fanghuai quickly stopped her, vowing to be self-reliant no matter what.
However, the urge to urinate seemed to know her thoughts and followed close behind. Ji Fanghuai could only look pleadingly at Jiang Zhi.
Jiang Zhi was clearly aware of her condition and immediately prepared to call the nurse.
“I want to do it myself.” Ji Fanghuai held back the urge, refusing to let Jiang Zhi call anyone.
Jiang Zhi said helplessly, “You can’t get out of bed yet.”
“Then I’ll try to get out of bed first. I have to do it myself anyway.”
Ji Fanghuai maintained her final bit of stubbornness. Now that she was conscious, she absolutely could not let anyone catheterize her again.
Didn’t she have any dignity?
“Are you shy?” Jiang Zhi thought for a moment and said, “It’s okay if you don’t want a nurse; I can do it too.”
You… how do you know how to do that?
Ji Fanghuai felt like she was going to faint, closing her eyes and refusing to communicate with Jiang Zhi.
“Listen, holding it in is bad for your health.” Jiang Zhi was at her wit’s end, her face quite serious.
Ji Fanghuai was adamant. Now that she was conscious, she had to be self-reliant.
“Then I’ll go discuss it with the doctor.” Jiang Zhi said, conceding. Seeing the person on the bed finally open her eyes, she added, “It’s best to listen to the doctor for things like this.”
“I know my own body best.” Ji Fanghuai was determined that even if the doctor disagreed, she absolutely would not allow that to happen.
“Does your head still hurt?”
“Yes.” Ji Fanghuai answered honestly, not daring to hide her condition.
“If you shake it gently, do you feel dizzy?”
“Yes.” Ji Fanghuai said listlessly. Every time she moved, she felt like she was sitting on a small boat.
“Lying in bed all the time will cause your muscles to atrophy. It’s good to get up and walk around, but you need constant supervision,” the attending doctor, a middle-aged man, said gently. “It’s also best to have Miss Jiang accompany you to the restroom.”
“Okay, thank you, Doctor.”
With Jiang Zhi’s help, Ji Fanghuai finally got out of bed. Two young nurses helped alongside, even joking, “You really don’t need to be shy. In our eyes, there are only patients and organs, and Miss Jiang is your fiancée, so you have even less reason to be shy.”
Ji Fanghuai flinched, thinking, you’ve seen it all, but this is the first time for me while conscious.
Moreover, she and Jiang Zhi were truly unfamiliar; she had only just learned that she had a fiancée before her amnesia and currently knew nothing about her.
Fortunately, her legs weren’t injured, and she could walk.
However, her legs felt weak and wobbly. The moment she left the bed, they were instantly bent like freshly cooked noodles. Ji Fanghuai gripped Jiang Zhi’s wrist tightly just to manage to stand steady.
Yet, as soon as she lifted her foot to walk, her head felt like it was placed on a small boat tossed in a storm, swaying back and forth. Ji Fanghuai felt so dizzy she wanted to vomit.
Jiang Zhi worriedly said, “If you really can’t…”
“I can do it.” Ji Fanghuai interrupted Jiang Zhi’s words. After slowly getting used to the dizziness, she finally managed to stand up steadily.
“Alright, then close your eyes; not seeing will help a little.” Jiang Zhi considerately supported her head against her shoulder. The two quickly arrived at the restroom.
Ji Fanghuai’s hands and feet were inconvenient. She used one hand to pull down her trousers. Knowing that Jiang Zhi was worried about her having an accident and couldn’t be chased away, she could only solve the problem with her neck stiff.
It was only when she washed her hands that she saw her reflection in the mirror.
For the surgery, her hair, which was previously unknown how long it was, had been shaved off. Now, there were only some stubble, virtually the same as being bald.
The wounds on her head had healed and the stitches were removed, exposing all the scars. They were crisscrossed and looked frightening.
It looked as if a watermelon had been struck on top with a heavy hammer, cracking it open, with the cracks twisting and turning.
Ji Fanghuai felt a dull ache in her head just looking at those scars. The only thing she was thankful for was that her face wasn’t injured, except for a red, swollen scar on her left brow bone.
But these injuries were enough to leave Ji Fanghuai shocked and disbelieving.
Ji Fanghuai lay back down on the bed, absent-minded, unable to regain her composure for a long time.
Jiang Zhi was too beautiful and incredibly gentle to her, so much so that she thought she should also be somewhat presentable, but she hadn’t expected her injuries to be so horrific.
No wonder Jiang Zhi was always afraid of her getting bumped or bruised.
If she had a fiancée like this, she would definitely take good care of her too.
Seeing Jiang Zhi, who seemed to know her thoughts, looking at her with concern, Ji Fanghuai pretended to be nonchalant and said, “I’m fine, I just think I look a little ugly.”
Hearing this, Jiang Zhi leaned down and gently hugged her, saying warmly, “No matter what, you are the most beautiful person in the world.”
Ji Fanghuai knew this was Jiang Zhi seeing her through a lover’s eyes, but unfortunately, she couldn’t be the beauty in Jiang Zhi’s eyes right now, nor could she be the lover who saw Jiang Zhi as a beauty.
She had forgotten her.
She could only treat her as a stranger.
