- After I Stopped Being a Simp, My Husband Fell for Me on His Own
- Chapter 7 - Major Gossip
Yu Yi was homeless once again.
However, this time his goal was clear. After finishing his classes, he retrieved his stored luggage and headed straight for the Command Academy.
The academies under the military university were incredibly difficult to enter, even for the nobles of the Upper District. In terms of difficulty, the hierarchy was generally Command Academy, followed by the Combat Academy, and then the Defense Academy.
After all, the Defense Academy still housed 10% of exceptionally outstanding Betas, whereas Betas made up only about 1% of the Command and Combat Academies. This was a testament to their rigorous standards.
Although the three academies were connected, the grounds were vast and the security was tight. Entry was strictly forbidden for those not belonging to their respective academy.
Yu Yi only learned this rule after pedaling a bicycle for several miles and arriving drenched in sweat, only to be blocked by a guard robot at the entrance of the Command Academy. Even showing his student identification from the Defense Academy was useless.
Yu Yi was stunned. It was a bad start.
“No matter,” he thought. “Try again.”
Yu Yi cleared his throat and said with a straight face, “I am a family member. Can family members not enter either?”
The guard robot scanned Yu Yi from head to toe and replied coldly, “You are not registered in the system.”
“The engagement only happened yesterday. How could it be updated so fast?” Yu Yi argued.
The robot mechanically repeated, “Apologies, you are not registered in the system.”
Yu Yi was frustrated. “You are far too impersonal. I want to file a complaint!”
The screen lit up, switching to a survey interface. The guard robot stated, “Please fill out your complaint here.”
Yu Yi angrily began filling out the form. It was too much. The Combat Academy was not even this strict, and they housed dangerous weapons. The Command Academy simply had too many rules.
Alphas and Omegas were categorized into high, middle, and low tiers, and the academies followed a similar hierarchy. As a Beta, this made him feel as though he had no human rights. Then again, Betas in the Upper District truly did not have many rights. During gestation, parents could choose embryo screening to filter out “inferior genes.” Yu Yi was the type that had failed to be screened out.
Just like Ji Xingxiao.
Yu Yi thought to himself, “Does that mean we are actually a good match?” Could that be why Ji Xingxiao had not refused the engagement? But then, why did the man seem so uninterested in him later?
“Damn it, did I perform poorly that day?” Yu Yi wondered.
He thought he had hidden his amazement well the moment he stepped out of the car. While he could not compare to those breathtaking Omegas, he looked decent enough when cleaned up. Why had Ji Xingxiao looked down on him?
“He looked down on me, yet he still gave me a ring,” Yu Yi realized.
Wait. The ring.
Yu Yi stopped mid-submission and began searching his pockets. He had taken the ring off when he returned to school, thinking a plain band was not worth much, and had simply stuffed it into his pocket. Now, it might be his only way into the Command Academy.
Fortunately, it was still there. Yu Yi found the ring and held it up to the guard robot. “This is an engagement ring. Surely this proves I am a family member?”
“I need to test it,” the robot replied.
Yu Yi felt a pang of worry. What if the Ji family had just given him a random, ordinary ring? He nervously handed the ring into the opening of the robot while considering that renting an apartment outside might not be so bad after all.
However, the immediate problem was not housing. If Ji Xingxiao did not want him, Cheng Sui would consider him useless and stop paying his tuition. He would be forced to take the money and spend the rest of his life in the Lower District. The annual tuition for the Defense Academy was an astronomical figure to Yu Yi. He could not earn it back even if he turned into a rabbit at the nightclub every night.
Bracing for the worst, Yu Yi watched the robot with bated breath. Five minutes later, the scan finished. The robot returned the ring and said, “Testing complete. It is confirmed that the metal contains samples of the Ji family genetic code.”
Yu Yi breathed a sigh of relief, though he was inwardly puzzled. Genetic samples? What was this ring made of that it contained family DNA?
He held the ring up to the light. It was an incredibly simple silver band, smooth and rounded, with no engravings inside. It looked nothing like something a family of the Ji stature would provide.
As he dazed, the robot spoke again. “Verification successful. Your information has been recorded. You may enter the academy.”
Without wasting a second, Yu Yi pocketed the ring and asked, “Which building does Ji Xingxiao live in?”
Once inside the Command Academy, Yu Yi finally understood the reason for the strict security. It was clearly to keep the other academies from getting jealous.
He had thought the dorms at the Defense Academy were good, but the Command Academy was the pinnacle of luxury. Very few people were selected to become commanders as it required both status and ability. Consequently, it had the fewest students but occupied the largest area.
There were private floors and individual training rooms. One could even take an automated transport from the basement directly to the classrooms. It took Yu Yi half the day just to walk around the building where Ji Xingxiao lived.
After all that wandering, he discovered he could not even get into the lobby. The ring did not work on the main door. Yu Yi stared through the transparent glass at the automated sofas in the lobby with deep regret. He had no choice but to wait at the entrance. He stood out quite a bit, though fortunately, there were very few people around.
It was so quiet that after an hour, not a single person had scanned into the building. He did not even have the chance to slip in behind someone to rest. Exhausted, Yu Yi used his bag as a cushion, adjusted it to a comfortable angle, and sat down to wait for Ji Xingxiao. As he waited, his thoughts began to wander.
What should he say when he saw Ji Xingxiao? He had not decided. Maybe he should just be thick-skinned and move in, then force the issue until they were settled so Ji Xingxiao would have to take responsibility. Then, he could use the Ji family’s connections and wealth to finish his studies and reach the peak of his life. Once he was successful, he could decisively break up with him.
He imagined Ji Xingxiao suddenly regretting everything and begging on his knees for him not to leave. Yu Yi found the mental image hilarious. It was far more likely that Ji Xingxiao would knock him out with two punches and then beg him on his knees not to die.
Yu Yi remembered the melodramatic soap operas his mother used to watch. There was often an ambitious Alpha man and a country-bumpkin Omega in an arranged marriage. Once the Alpha became successful, he abandoned his family in the city. One day, the disheveled Omega would show up at the door with a child and many bags.
That felt much more like his current situation. All he was missing was a child to lead by the hand. However, he and Ji Xingxiao would never have a child. A Beta’s reproductive cavity is not as developed as an Omega’s, making conception very difficult. This was exactly why Yu Qing and Cheng Sui had kept him.
Yu Yi looked into the distance. It was now completely dark. The Command Academy had switched to its night mode, and the lights made the place look prosperous. Yu Yi felt a sudden pang of sadness. He wondered if a Beta like him was simply not meant to be born. Then, his stomach made an unceremonious sound.
“Gurgle.”
The melancholy vanished instantly. He was hungry—absolutely, miserably hungry.
He waited until it was late, yet there was still no sign of Ji Xingxiao. He began to wonder if the man even lived at the academy. No matter how luxurious it was, it could not compare to the Ji estate. Still, he had worked hard to get in, so he would wait one night. If the man truly was not here, would he have to go to the Ji residence?
Thinking of that mansion, even Yu Yi’s thick skin felt a bit thin. He had a natural fear of such large houses. It was, in truth, an inferiority complex.
“Whatever,” he thought. “One step at a time.”
Yu Yi had not slept well the previous night, and after the events of the day, he was exhausted. He eventually leaned against the door and drifted off to sleep.
Ji Xingxiao had trained late today. He had lost some time due to the engagement yesterday and had to make it up. His longtime friend, Qin Feng, had been pestering him about his fiancée. The ceremony had been low-key, with only the Ji family present. Ji Xingxiao’s fiancée was a total mystery. What kind of person could convince Ji Xingxiao to agree to an engagement?
Before they even had time to remove their simulation helmets, Qin Feng asked, “Did Bai Ziqi not differentiate into an Alpha? Who did you get engaged to?”
Ji Xingxiao emerged from the pod, removed his helmet, and gave Qin Feng a cold look. The birthmark on the right side of his face made his expression seem even more severe.
Qin Feng took off his own helmet and hurried to catch up. “Hey, wait for me!”
On the way back, he could not help but gossip. “Is it someone from our academy?”
Ji Xingxiao did not answer and walked straight ahead. Qin Feng followed closely. “Would your family let you marry someone from outside the military university? Does that mean you have to take them on missions with you? I am so curious. I cannot believe you actually got engaged.”
Ji Xingxiao finally snapped, “Shut up.”
Ji Xingxiao was the youngest student ever to enter the Command Academy, and his father was the Supreme Commander of the military district. Aside from the birthmark on his face, his background and abilities were perfect. His temper, however, was not.
Qin Feng could not understand why Ji Xingxiao, who had always been resistant to the idea of an engagement, had suddenly taken a leave of absence yesterday. It turned out he had gone to get engaged. For a moment, Qin Feng thought he had misheard. Since returning, Ji Xingxiao had not mentioned a word about it, making Qin Feng incredibly curious about the fiancée.
She had to be an outstanding Omega, right? At least at the level of someone like Bai Changfeng. But even an Omega of that level would not quite match the status of the Ji family. Although Ji Xingxiao had a birthmark, he had broken the combat simulation record within two months of enrollment and was still setting new ones. He was a monster. The whole school had been buzzing, with many people secretly pleased that Bai Ziqi had become an Alpha. And yet, Ji Xingxiao had quietly gotten engaged at such a young age.
They reached the dormitory building, and Qin Feng still had no answers. He was used to it; if Ji Xingxiao did not want to speak, nothing could pry his mouth open. Then, he saw a clean-looking Beta sitting at the entrance, dozing off. His head was tilted to the side, and he was drooling.
Qin Feng assumed the person was looking for someone and called out, “Hey, wake up!”
Before he could ask who the Beta was looking for, he saw the young man slowly open his eyes. The Beta looked at the two of them dazed for a moment, then his eyes landed on Ji Xingxiao. It was as if a gust of wind had blown into a dying fire; the Beta’s eyes slowly lit up. As if he had found a treasure, his gaze began to shine.
He wiped his mouth, shouldered his incredibly worn-out bag, and looked at Ji Xingxiao with anticipation.
Then, Qin Feng heard him shout at the top of his lungs, “Hubby! You are back!”
Ji Xingxiao was speechless. Qin Feng was stunned.
The major gossip: Ji Xingxiao’s fiancé was an ordinary, plain Beta!
