- Chapter 6 - The Truth
To be honest, Cheng Sui’s words left Yu Yi feeling utterly frustrated. Even for someone as thick-skinned as he was, it was difficult not to feel hurt by such a statement. Yu Yi, who was usually quick-witted and articulate, found himself unable to offer a rebuttal. After returning to his room, he lay on the bed and felt depressed for a full ten minutes. He stared at the ambient lights on the ceiling, let his mind go blank for a while, and then suddenly sat up.
“Damn it!” he thought.
Why should those people be allowed to kick him back to the Lower District with just a single sentence? He refused to accept it. Yu Yi lay back down, and his mind began to race.
Although Ji Xingxiao came from a prestigious family and possessed formidable strength, the birthmark on his face was a significant issue among the noble circles of the Upper District. It was highly possible that no one else wanted him, which was why he was engaged to a mere Beta. He was essentially being treated as a “Plan B.”
Yu Yi did not mind being a backup plan, but since his ability to stay in the Upper District was now at stake, he had to find a way to turn himself into “Plan A.” After much deliberation, he decided to take the initiative. He resolved that starting tomorrow, he would proactively visit Ji Xingxiao and play the role of a devoted fiancé.
Yu Yi did not think the birthmark on Ji Xingxiao’s face was a problem. In fact, he thought it looked quite cool. However, after working for so long and being ridiculed at school, he knew how shallow the Upper District nobles could be. They were the product of meticulously selected high-quality genes, and a flawless appearance was their standard requirement.
But who decided that skin had to be flawless? Even if Ji Xingxiao was not perfect, Yu Yi knew from the reaction at the engagement that the Ji family looked down on him. He also knew he was not a match for Ji Xingxiao. There were very few natural ability users in the Upper District, and those who entered the Command Academy at eighteen were one in ten thousand.
Still, if he could just fake it until he graduated, it would be enough. At the very least, he could not let Cheng Sui think that Ji Xingxiao had rejected him so soon.
The next morning, Yu Yi uncharacteristically woke up early. He tidied himself up and even combed his hair. While leaning toward the mirror to check for blackheads, his elbow accidentally struck a spray bottle of pheromone fluid sitting on the cabinet. The cheap plastic bottle wobbled and fell into the sink, causing the nozzle cap to pop off.
That was bad.
As Yu Yi scrambled to pick it up, he noticed a crack at the bottom of the bottle. The pheromone fluid was leaking all over his hands. This was even worse. Yu Yi let out a heavy sigh and quickly turned on the faucet, hoping to wash away the permeating scent. Just as he was filling the bottle with water to rinse it out, he heard Bai Ziqi’s voice behind him.
“Mother wants you to come down for breakfast.”
Yu Yi froze mid-motion. He wondered if Bai Ziqi would smell it. At the nightclub, he only dared to spray a little, but now he had spilled an entire bottle. He also wondered if it was polite to enter someone’s room without knocking. This felt incredibly rude, even if this was not technically his own home.
“Oh, okay, I will be right there,” Yu Yi said, turning the water up higher. He frantically rinsed his palms and the bottle, but Bai Ziqi did not respond.
The bathroom in this room was located right by the door. Bai Ziqi took a few steps inside and stood behind Yu Yi. A hint of confusion appeared in his beautiful, clear eyes. “What are you doing?”
“I am washing my face. What else would I be doing?” Yu Yi did not dare turn off the water. He turned his head while still rinsing and feigned calmness. “You go ahead. I will be down in a moment.”
By the time he turned his head, Bai Ziqi was already very close. At fifteen, Bai Ziqi was nearly as tall as Yu Yi. He leaned in slightly as if he were sniffing something. Cold sweat began to pour down Yu Yi’s back. With a height like this, how could the family have raised him as an Omega? No fifteen-year-old Omega was nearly one hundred eighty centimeters tall. This was clearly not the path toward differentiating into an Omega.
“There is a scent on you,” Bai Ziqi murmured.
Bai Ziqi lowered his head, and his chin almost rested on Yu Yi’s shoulder. If he turned his face just slightly, he could bite into Yu Yi’s clean, exposed neck. This was a highly aggressive and dangerous action between Alphas and Omegas, as that was the spot where pheromones were injected.
However, Yu Yi was a Beta and did not think that far ahead. He simply felt that the boy was too close and instinctively threw an elbow back.
“Ugh!”
A muffled groan followed. Despite being a high-level Alpha, Bai Ziqi failed to dodge the strike. He retreated a few steps while clutching his nose. Yu Yi turned around in horror and clearly saw a streak of red flowing through the boy’s fingers, which stained his fair, slender hand.
Yu Yi realized he was in serious trouble.
Bai Ziqi had entered his rut. Unsurprisingly, it had been triggered by Yu Yi’s small bottle of cheap pheromones. After elbowing Bai Ziqi, Yu Yi had bolted out of the room, only to run straight into Bai Changfeng, who was coming upstairs to find them. A bad situation had turned even worse.
Bai Ziqi had been given suppressants and was now asleep. Downstairs, Cheng Sui stood with a somber expression alongside a serious Bai Changfeng, who had dropped his usual gentle smile. Yu Yi felt an excruciating level of embarrassment.
“I accidentally knocked it over,” Yu Yi tried to explain. “He walked right into my room. How was I supposed to know?”
How could he have known that a high-level Alpha like Bai Ziqi would react to this kind of pheromone? He had clearly bought the cheapest fluid available. Yu Yi felt deeply wronged, but his explanation was clearly to no avail.
“Where did you buy this?” Cheng Sui asked sharply.
It was rare to see Cheng Sui with such an expression. Yu Yi shrunk back and answered weakly, “The black market.” The black market in the Upper District was a grey area that contained everything. Yu Yi only knew about it because Old Ba had taken him there.
“Do you realize that this is illegal?” The usually calm and collected business chairman was rarely this emotional.
Yu Yi was stunned by Cheng Sui’s shouting. He did not understand how a five-hundred-star-coin item could be a criminal offense. “I did not know,” Yu Yi stammered.
“Why would you use something like this on your brother?” Cheng Sui demanded.
Yu Yi found this absurd. “I told you, I accidentally knocked it over right as he walked in. Why would I use it on him?”
To his surprise, Cheng Sui was infuriated by Yu Yi’s casual attitude and blurted out, “Who knows if you did this just to stay here and—”
He was suddenly interrupted when Bai Changfeng pulled at his sleeve. Realizing what he had almost said, Cheng Sui abruptly shut his mouth. Yu Yi was left in a daze. The empty hall seemed to echo with Cheng Sui’s voice. Every word made his heart tremble. Even though the sentence was unfinished, Yu Yi knew exactly what his biological father meant.
“You think I am the kind of person who would do something like that?” Yu Yi asked in disbelief.
Silence was the only response. Yu Yi lowered his voice and gave a self-deprecating chuckle. “What kind of person do you think I am?”
He raised his eyes and looked directly at his father. He looked more like Cheng Sui than he did his mother. After a moment of silence, Cheng Sui spoke. “We are well aware of what you do at school.”
“You are aware of what? What have you seen?” Yu Yi’s voice trembled with anger, and he struggled to remain calm. “Do you know that I work every single day just for this cursed living allowance? Do you know that my mother’s grave is the cheapest kind available? Do you know how I have lived all these years?”
By the end, Yu Yi’s voice was thick with tears. He had come to the Upper District in a disheveled state, only to find a father living a life of luxury and a brother who was treated like a chosen one. He could not tell if he felt jealousy or an inferiority complex. Perhaps it was both.
“Yu Yi,” Cheng Sui said. Perhaps because Bai Changfeng was present, the mention of Yu Qing acted like a trigger. Cheng Sui’s expression of guilt was instantly replaced by coldness. He interrupted Yu Yi almost indifferently. “I never mistreated you or your mother. That sum of money was enough to ensure you both lived a comfortable life. You should realize that your current situation is not my fault.”
But Yu Yi was beyond the point of being calm. Even with a father for whom he felt little affection, being viewed this way hurt him deeply. He shouted with a voice that was nearly a sob, “Do you dare mention my mother?”
He was supposed to have a complete family. He was not supposed to be like this. Bai Ziqi was the high-class individual they had carefully raised, so any bad deed must have been the fault of Yu Yi.
Cheng Sui did not stop despite Yu Yi’s grief. He said coldly, “If your mother had even a shred of concern for your future, she would not have spent all that money on that Alpha, leaving you in the state you are in now.”
The anger that had been fueling Yu Yi was suddenly replaced by a drenching coldness. His expression froze. It was like a hole in a tattered bag. Yu Yi had spent years trying to pretend the hole was not there, pretending the bag could still hold things. Now, Cheng Sui had coldly torn that hole wide open.
The truth spilled out unexpectedly. Yu Yi pursed his lips as a line of tears fell from his eyes like broken beads, hitting the intricate pattern of the carpet and quickly vanishing. He turned his head away and stubbornly wiped them off. He had known for a long time that no one loved him and that he should never have been born.
“That is enough,” Bai Changfeng said, trying to smooth things over. He spoke gently. “Your father does not have any other intentions, but do you realize that pheromone fluid is a dangerous substance?”
Yu Yi did not respond. He held back his tears and refused to look back.
“Pheromone fluid is extracted from glands,” Bai Changfeng continued. “This involves the illegal trade of organs, which is a very serious matter.”
Yu Yi was struggling to contain himself. His nose began to run, and he inhaled loudly, but he remained stubbornly silent.
“We believe you would not do such a thing to your brother. However, you cannot buy this ever again. Do you understand?”
Bai Changfeng’s words calmed Yu Yi slightly. He nodded and said in a muffled voice, “It will not wash off.”
“What?” Bai Changfeng asked patiently.
“I cannot get this scent off me no matter how much I wash. That is why I have to go to school like this. I do not know who started those rumors, but I only wanted to earn a little more in tips. I was not doing anything else.”
Bai Changfeng’s expression softened. “I see.”
The deep-cleaning mode in the bathroom could directly remove the scent of pheromones from the body. If Yu Yi had finished listening to Bai Ziqi earlier, he would have known that. Yu Yi washed himself in silence. Only after the purple light disappeared and the bathroom announced that the cleaning was complete did he go out to dry his hair and pack his few belongings.
Cheng Sui was still downstairs. When he saw Yu Yi descend, Bai Changfeng gently pulled on his hand. Cheng Sui’s ears moved, but he still turned his head away, pretending not to see Yu Yi. It was finally clear whose temper Yu Yi had inherited.
Yu Yi left.
