- Chapter 10 - Do You Like Bunny Girls?
Yu Yi abruptly shut his mouth. Looking at the expression on Ji Xingxiao’s face, he knew things were going poorly.
He truly felt insulted by the Ji family’s demand to examine his body and reproductive cavity before the engagement. Seeing the usually composed Ji Xingxiao look flustered and trapped had given him a secret sense of satisfaction, which was why he had intentionally brought it up several times.
However, thoroughly enraging Ji Xingxiao now would bring him no benefit. Yu Yi attempted to explain, “No, it is not like that.”
He really should not have mentioned it. Who knew Ji Xingxiao was so easily teased?
Ji Xingxiao took a step forward. In that instant, the overwhelming pressure of a high-level Alpha came crashing down. Yu Yi, forced by the sheer intensity of the man’s presence, could not help but take a step back.
He heard Ji Xingxiao say coldly, “Stop playing the fool. I have no interest in knowing what you are planning. Do not provoke me.”
At eighteen, Ji Xingxiao possessed the towering stature of a high-level Alpha, easily enveloping Yu Yi in his shadow. His looks sat on the fine line between youthful spirit and the hard, deep-set features of a grown man. The birthmark on his face broke through that lingering boyishness, making him appear more mature and ruthless than his peers.
The surrounding temperature plummeted, just as it had yesterday, sending a chill from the top of Yu Yi’s head to the soles of his feet. Yu Yi did not dare utter another provocative word. He withdrew his antics and said, “I understand.”
He then added an explanation, “I did tell people about our engagement, but that was it. I did not say anything else.”
“I think it is necessary for me to clarify something.” Ji Xingxiao’s expression did not soften despite the explanation. He looked down at Yu Yi with a cold, superior gaze. “I showed up there that night specifically to see my future fiancé.”
Ji Xingxiao emphasized the word “fiancé” with particular weight. Yu Yi was stunned for a moment before realizing Ji Xingxiao was referring to that night at the nightclub.
“Your turn,” Ji Xingxiao said coldly. “Explain.”
For some reason, Yu Yi thought he detected a hint of concern in that demand. As soon as the thought surfaced, he suppressed it. The Ji family likely valued their reputation above all else; otherwise, they would not have demanded a medical report.
“I was working. What else would I be doing?” Yu Yi replied quite frankly.
“Why were you dressed like that? And why did you spray pheromones?” Ji Xingxiao’s tone grew colder. His dark, bottomless eyes stared straight at Yu Yi, demanding an answer with the intensity of an interrogation. “I believe I have an obligation to understand what kind of person you are.”
“To earn more money,” Yu Yi replied. Under the pressure of the questioning, he actually relaxed a little and began to explain patiently. “Omegas are rare in nightclubs. By spraying pheromones, I can get more tips. With more tips, I can pay my rent and utilities and buy late-night snacks.”
The man who had been so cold just moments ago now wore a peculiar expression.
“Why?” Ji Xingxiao could not comprehend what Yu Yi was saying.
Yu Yi realized this and sighed. “Did I not tell you before?” He did not expect Ji Xingxiao to remember, but he continued anyway. “I am the son of Cheng Sui’s ex-wife. He and Bai Changfeng are the true love story, so they do not want to see me or my mother.”
Yu Yi paused. He realized this was a perfect opportunity to play the pity card. He cleared his throat and tried to summon a mournful emotion. “My mother was a simple person. She was swindled out of her money by a pretty boy and then died heroically in a fire. That man kicked me out, and I have been living on my own since I was sixteen.”
Ji Xingxiao frowned. “Why did you not look for your father?”
“I did, but he did not want to deal with me,” Yu Yi shrugged, feigning indifference. “I eventually came to that scumbag because I had no other choice. Getting into the Defense Academy was something I had to beg him for.”
Ji Xingxiao’s expression seemed moved for a moment, but he kept his face stern. “You should not refer to your father that way.”
It was almost unbelievable to hear such words from an eighteen-year-old. Did he not have a rebellious phase?
Yu Yi ignored the comment and continued, “They said I have poor aptitude and that attending the Defense Academy is useless, but I want to try. I do not want to go back to the Lower District.”
Ji Xingxiao remarked, “Your aptitude is indeed poor.”
Yu Yi was speechless. He held his breath. Was that really necessary? He was practically on the verge of tears! He could not hold back his annoyance. Yu Yi said indignantly, “How is my aptitude poor? It is not as if I have been learning these things since I was a child like you people. I…”
“First of all, you are a Beta,” Ji Xingxiao said calmly. His look seemed to imply that Yu Yi had been behind everyone else since birth.
“What is wrong with being a Beta? Are there not Betas in the Defense Academy?” Yu Yi’s voice lost its confidence as he spoke. He knew that the Betas in the Defense Academy were not like him. Those Betas were elite individuals hand-picked from the nobility of the Upper District. They were Betas who were stronger than everyone else. After two months of classes, he finally understood why Bai Changfeng had initially been against him joining the military university.
Hearing Yu Yi’s retort, the corner of Ji Xingxiao’s mouth curled slightly. He looked much less aggressive than before. With a half-smile, he said, “If it makes you feel better to think that way, then there is no problem.”
Feeling the tension between them dissipate, Yu Yi breathed a sigh of relief. “Exactly. I will work hard.”
The next second, he was ruthlessly interrupted by Ji Xingxiao. “All of your aptitudes are equally poor.”
Yu Yi was stunned. The person who had been acting submissive just a moment ago was now full of defiance. He brought back the previous topic and asked, “I also want to know something. That night, I had not even agreed to the marriage alliance. How did you know I would agree to it later?”
Yu Yi’s momentum suddenly surged, catching Ji Xingxiao off guard. Seeing the man’s reaction, Yu Yi felt even more emboldened. He straightened his back and looked at Ji Xingxiao with feigned realization. “You came to peek at me ahead of time, did you not?”
This question deflated Ji Xingxiao’s imposing aura. A look of flustered confusion appeared on his face, and he took a slight step back.
“What? You dare to do it but not admit it?” Now it was Yu Yi’s turn to take control. As Ji Xingxiao retreated, Yu Yi pressed forward. Recalling the details of that night, he rolled his eyes and asked, “Do you like bunny girls?”
Visibly, Ji Xingxiao’s face and ears turned a deep shade of red.
“Nonsense!” Ji Xingxiao threw out the word and slammed the door to his room.
Strangely, Yu Yi’s mood felt as light and joyful as it had that night after he first teased him.
Since moving in, Yu Yi had not seen the inside of Ji Xingxiao’s room. He assumed it had its own bathroom and walk-in closet; otherwise, the man would not have stayed inside the entire evening.
Fortunately, there was a guest bathroom. After washing up, Yu Yi lay on the sofa, staring at a massive decorative fish tank in deep thought. Up close, he realized the tank was quite unusual. If not for the bionic fish inside, it would look more like a transparent wall or a screen. However, the water was too clear to function as a screen.
The fish looked very realistic, but upon closer inspection, their swimming patterns were identical. Was this a decoration unique to the Command Academy, or was it necessary for Ji Xingxiao’s natural ability?
The water wall was very close to the sofa. Even with the living room lights off, there was still light. The light strips seemed to be installed in the floor, casting a soft blue glow upward. It made the water shimmer. The slender bionic fish drifted through the water like deep blue silk ribbons flowing with the current. The entire water wall looked as beautiful as a painting.
Yu Yi had always been a good sleeper and could sleep even with the lights on. He turned over, watching the shimmering patterns of light on the opposite wall, and gradually felt drowsiness take over. This arrangement was actually quite good. He and Ji Xingxiao would not bother each other.
He wondered what Ji Xingxiao thought of it. The man was likely unhappy. Anyone would be if a Beta, who called them Hubby at every turn, suddenly moved in with them. Yu Yi felt no guilt about it. If he was so unhappy, why did he agree to the engagement in the first place? He deserved it.
In the middle of the night, Yu Yi woke up to a sharp, agonizing cramp. He opened his eyes, his face pale. He stared at the shimmering light reflecting on the ceiling for a good while before remembering that he was no longer living in that tiny, coffin-sized room.
Gritting his teeth, he got out of bed and reached under the sofa for his tattered bag. He found a pack of medicine in the inner pocket, went to the kitchen for a glass of water, took the pills, and lay back down.
It was an old problem. Usually, the pain would subside shortly after taking the medicine. Yu Yi clutched his stomach and breathed carefully. His stomach issues started when he was a child. At the time, Yu Qing did not take it seriously. Not everyone in the Lower District had a home medical device. She waited three full days before taking him to the hospital. Since then, his stomach had been sensitive, and he always kept medicine in his bag.
No one in the Upper District used oral medicine like this anymore. Yu Yi had brought a large supply from the Lower District. He wondered if it had expired. He lay there for an hour, but the pain did not subside. In fact, it was getting worse.
He clutched his stomach, drenched in cold sweat. He checked the time and saw it was three in the morning. He initially dismissed the idea of asking Ji Xingxiao for a medical device. The dorms were equipped with medical devices; Yu Yi had seen it in the school brochure. However, the Command Academy was different from the Defense Academy, and he had no idea where Ji Xingxiao kept his. Yu Yi did not dare look for it.
The person who had been so bold a few hours ago was now feeling very timid. He was already staying in someone else’s place for free. If he started rummaging through things, he might be kicked out tomorrow. Cheng Sui often called him uneducated, but he would not do something truly disrespectful.
Yu Yi curled up in pain. After tossing and turning for half an hour, he could no longer take it. He hunched over and slowly moved to the door of Ji Xingxiao’s room. After a moment of hesitation, he knocked. He had very little strength left. He called out Ji Xingxiao’s name in a weak voice. “Ji Xingxiao. Ji Xingxiao.”
There was no response. Yu Yi continued to knock. He called out feebly, “Hubby.”
Ji Xingxiao had been awake since the very first knock. He opened his eyes in the darkness. Hearing Yu Yi’s weak call, he could not help but sneer inwardly. The Beta had not even been there for a day before his true colors were revealed. Ji Xingxiao would not give him a chance to succeed.
He had regretted his hasty decision to agree to the engagement, especially since the other party was such a shameless Beta. However, his upbringing prevented him from admitting he was wrong. The person outside started calling him Hubby again. That was a word that did not even exist between his own parents. This Beta had only met him a few times; why did he dare to use such a term? It was simply…
Ji Xingxiao gnashed his teeth and intended to ignore it, but the voice outside grew even weaker. A high-level Alpha has superior hearing. He heard Yu Yi’s voice drop even lower as he whispered, “It hurts.”
Ji Xingxiao frowned. Perhaps it was just a trick to get him to come out.
Suddenly, a thud echoed. The weak calling from outside vanished completely after the muffled sound. Ji Xingxiao bolted upright, his body moving faster than his mind. The moment he pulled the door open, the hallway appeared empty.
Then, his ankle felt an itch. Someone had grabbed it. He looked down to see Yu Yi lying on the floor, his features distorted in pain. He looked like a male ghost from a horror movie, tremulously clutching Ji Xingxiao’s ankle. His eyes were strained as he looked up, and a weak voice escaped his throat. “Save me.”
Ji Xingxiao was stunned. In this moment of intense pain, it was somewhat inappropriate, but Ji Xingxiao was not wearing a shirt. He only wore a pair of loose pajama pants. His shoulders were broad, his waist was narrow, and his muscles were defined. He was in such good shape that Yu Yi found it hard to look away. And from this angle, he could see Ji Xingxiao’s underwear.
His stomach really hurt. His current thoughts were also very inappropriate. Quite fittingly, Yu Yi moved his gaze elsewhere.
