- Chapter 38 - The Nine Fiends Hidden in the Wall
Although he was extremely reluctant, under Taichu’s strong suggestion, Qiu Fuxue still took the dead weight with them.
The three of them stood before the waterfall and walked through the water.
Instantly, the scenery around them shifted. The brilliant light vanished, and they were plunged into complete darkness.
Qiu Fuxue summoned a glow-in-the-dark firefly to illuminate the giant stone blocking their path.
Li Yun pulled Qiu Fuxue to the side, establishing a clear distance from Jiufang Cangze
Jiufang Cangze folded his arms and gave him a contemptuous look.
“This is… a ‘Gatekeeper Stone’?” Qiu Fuxue touched the giant stone in front of him. It felt very familiar.
Jiufang Cangze raised an eyebrow at his words. “What a strange name.”
“Shisan told me about it,” Qiu Fuxue said faintly.
“You believe anything he says,” Jiufang Cangze said, twisting his lips. “It’s just a rock. It has no other name. The old fellow sent us to the illusion of the Moon Shadow Wall .”
“The Primordial Deity’s illusion is more real than yours,” Qiu Fuxue said, holding his wooden sword. He plunged it into the stone and easily shattered the Gatekeeper Stone.
Jiufang Cangze watched him, a look of surprise on his face. Back in his place of origin, the other’s cultivation had progressed by leaps and bounds. He believed that in a few hundred years, he would be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with Taichu. By then, he really wouldn’t be able to control him anymore.
“If you keep staring, I’ll gouge out your eyes!” Li Yun suddenly blocked Qiu Fuxue’s view.
Jiufang Cangze frowned in displeasure. He was already fuming about having to come along with Li Yun. As the two were about to start a fight, Qiu Fuxue held Li Yun back. “A-Yun, don’t mind him. Let’s go.”
The path ahead was wide but led to an endless desert. Only after they had walked a little distance did Jiufang Cangze follow.
The ribbon tied behind Qiu Fuxue’s head fluttered at its ends, and a little snow-white rabbit was faintly visible on it.
It carried Li Yun’s spiritual energy. Jiufang Cangze looked away with disdain.
A rabbit eats plants. If Qiu Fuxue stayed with him for long, he might be swallowed whole one day.
In the past, Jiufang Cangze’s mind would never wander to such strange thoughts. He had to admit that his possessiveness of Qiu Fuxue had grown deeper, but what could be called “liking” was based on him being in complete control of the situation.
He didn’t like being controlled by others, nor did he like feelings that put him in a subordinate position.
“Watch out!”
As he was lost in thought, a pleasant voice suddenly rang out. He felt a gust of wind cut past his cheek.
The wooden sword flew out of Qiu Fuxue’s hand and plunged a suddenly appearing scale deep into the sand.
Jiufang Cangze touched the side of his face. There was a little blood. He didn’t know if he was injured by the scale or if Qiu Fuxue had done it on purpose.
Having missed its target, a half-demonic, half-bone mermaid (鲛人) with a ferocious face emerged from under the sand.
Li Yun’s eyes hurt from looking at the monster. “Senior Brother, didn’t you say mermaids were especially beautiful?”
“They are beautiful,” Qiu Fuxue said, retrieving his wooden sword and preparing to fight.
Jiufang Cangze’s hands were empty, and he couldn’t summon Hengjiang. He could only stand on the sidelines and watch. Besides, he hadn’t planned to help anyway.
“I told you you were naive and easily fooled. This is what a mermaid truly looks like.”
The trial prepared by Taichu wasn’t too difficult. Qiu Fuxue even had time to talk to Jiufang Cangze while fighting the mermaid. “You still haven’t told me who the Nine Fiends are.”
Jiufang Cangze acted shamelessly. “You want to know? Marry me and come back with me, and I’ll tell you.”
Swish! A flash of sword energy scraped the ground by his feet. His expression didn’t change, but his feet instinctively took two steps back.
“Shameless!” Li Yun glared, and the force of his attack on the mermaid grew even more powerful.
The mermaid was quickly dealt with. Qiu Fuxue shook the blood from his sword. “If this is the Moon Shadow Wall, the fiends that come after will be even harder to deal with. A-Yun, you have to be careful.”
“What about me?” Jiufang Cangze pulled off a few mermaid scales and tossed them in his hand. “Qiu Fuxue, we’ve already shared a bed so many times. You should show some consideration for your husband… Aghh—!”
Before he could finish, he suddenly showed an expression of pain and fell to the ground. A trace of blood spilled from his lips, and he clutched his chest tightly.
Qiu Fuxue’s hand was lowered, his eyes filled with a deep disgust.
He was repulsed by this, especially that night in the general’s mansion.
More fiends appeared, but it was perplexing that other than the Winged Butterfly (羽蝶) and the Tribulation Cloud (劫雲), the others appeared as formless shadows.
He still didn’t know who the other fiends were.
His wooden sword was swift and powerful. The fiends fell one after another. Qiu Fuxue counted. Including the Gatekeeper Stone outside, there were only eight. One was still missing.
“Didn’t we get all nine?” Li Yun said, gesturing to the groveling Jiufang Cangze on the ground.
He was now slightly taller than Qiu Fuxue. He wrapped his arm around his senior brother’s shoulder in a familiar gesture.
Qiu Fuxue patted his hand helplessly, but didn’t push him away. “You’re right. With this demon, it’s exactly nine.”
The end of the desert was a fiery red sunset. Qiu Fuxue’s eyes flickered. There were so many mysteries hidden in the Moon Shadow Wall. Taichu had chosen not to tell him everything, yet he had made him enter this illusion to get to know it beforehand. There had to be a reason.
His light red peach blossom eyes lowered, and Qiu Fuxue muttered to himself, “Perhaps the land of this Moon Shadow Wall is a fiend itself.”
“What?” His voice was too low for Li Yun to hear clearly.
“Nothing,” Qiu Fuxue said, shaking his head with a smile.
He walked up to Jiufang Cangze, waving the heart’s blood beads on his wrist. “Demon Lord, how does it feel to have your heart gouged out?”
Jiufang Cangze lay on the ground, breathing heavily, and looked up. The sunset cast a gentle light on the man before him, making him so beautiful he was almost untouchable.
“…It’s nothing.” He suddenly smiled. “But to get a smile from a beauty, it’s worth my life.”
“Shameless.”
Qiu Fuxue was once again taken aback by his shamelessness. He kicked him a few times, determined to get back at him for all the humiliation he suffered in the Demon Realm.
Jiufang Cangze, like a pig that wasn’t afraid of boiling water, rolled over in the sand, lying on his back with his limbs spread out, allowing the man to vent his anger on him.
He suddenly said, “A-Xue, if you don’t want to marry into the Qingming Palace, why don’t you marry me and return to your Thousand Thoughts Sect?”
Qiu Fuxue was so unnerved by the intimate address that his face turned as dark as a pot. “The Thousand Thoughts Sect doesn’t take in those with evil hearts, and as for your fate, the Primordial Deity will decide it.”
Jiufang Cangze tilted his head and thought for a moment. “I don’t need that old man. I’ll listen to you. If you tell me to farm, I’ll put on a plow right now and show you.”
“Are you out of your mind?” Li Yun looked at him as if he were an idiot. He was starting to wonder if the demon’s Spiritual Orb was connected to his brain.
A gust of wind and sand swept through, and the illusion vanished.
Taichu was in the courtyard, leaning against the immortal deer and eating fruit. He was slightly surprised to see them appear.
“You’re out so quickly? Looks like Fuxue’s progress in his cultivation is quite significant.”
Qiu Fuxue put away his wooden sword and respectfully bowed to Taichu. “Primordial Deity, I am grateful for your kindness, and I don’t know how to repay you.”
Taichu rubbed his head and said with a gentle smile, “If you want to repay me, just deal with the Nine Fiends and bring back some fresh and delicious mortal food.”
With that, he walked over to Jiufang Cangze, who was still lying in the same position he was in the illusion.
“Cangze didn’t rest well, and somehow he sided with the Nine Fiends and got beaten by Fuxue?”
Jiufang Cangze “tsked,” closing his eyes. “You’re too meddlesome.”
