- Chapter 22 - Rushing to the Soul-Breaking Bridge
Late at night, a faint ghost fire burned in the dim prison cell, casting flickering shadows.
After setting things up outside, Fifteen returned and easily broke the iron chains on the cell door and Qiu Fuxue’s wrists.
“Don’t you have the keys?” Qiu Fuxue rubbed his sore wrists. The golden shackles were useless against him, as only Jiufang Cangze could unlock them.
Fifteen kicked open the wobbly cell door. “This way has the proper feel of a prison break!”
“…”
With all the defenses against outsiders, it was the “insider” who was the biggest problem. Poor Ye Zhu, he was an upright man but had to deal with such a relative.
“Let’s be clear first, my Spiritual Orb is stained with Jiufang Cangze’s demonic energy. If you want to intercept it midway, it will be very difficult for you to interfere.”
After kneeling on the ground for a long time, Qiu Fuxue’s legs were weak when he stood up, and he almost fell back. Fifteen helped him just in time. “I’ve told you so many times, I don’t want your Spiritual Orb. For someone with insufficient cultivation, your Pure Spirit Body is just useless waste. It’s no use to me.”
Qiu Fuxue frowned. “I don’t believe you would help me for no reason.”
Fifteen gave him a roll of his eyes. “Just consider it a good deed for the day, okay?”
Earlier that day, Fifteen had suddenly offered to help him escape and said he could take him to a place to leave the Demon Realm, a place other than the Immortal-Demon Barrier.
Although he didn’t know what the other party’s intentions were, Qiu Fuxue had no other choice and had to trust him this one time.
The guards outside had already been lured away by Fifteen. They followed the pre-planned route and ran at full speed. To prevent the shackles on Qiu Fuxue from making noise, Fifteen casually cast a small spell to eliminate the sound.
Fifteen’s moves were decisive and swift, not at all like someone with low cultivation as he had claimed. Qiu Fuxue was full of doubts. In a flash, they had reached the side gate of the General’s Residence.
The faint ghost fire illuminated the cluttered shadows ahead. Fifteen’s heart sank. He immediately stopped and pulled Qiu Fuxue down behind a wall in the shadows.
What’s going on? There was never anyone guarding this area before!
Fifteen blinked at Qiu Fuxue, conveying a message. Qiu Fuxue returned a look—you’re good for nothing but failing.
As they were at a stalemate, Qiu Fuxue suddenly felt something tug on his sleeve in the darkness. He looked at the innocent-looking Fifteen, and then a head poked out from behind them.
“!!!”
Yujian quickly covered both their mouths and made a silencing gesture. Then he pointed behind him, gesturing for them to follow him.
Qiu Fuxue and Fifteen exchanged glances and followed.
Yujian led them to a weedy corner of the wall. Pushing aside the overgrown weeds, a hole in the wall came into view.
“Hua Hua dug this hole. You guys go out through here.”
Fifteen went up and gestured a few times. Qiu Fuxue’s build could just barely squeeze through the hole dug by the little demon beast, but he himself couldn’t.
Fortunately, he had magic. Shrinking his body a bit would be no problem.
Qiu Fuxue touched the hole in the wall with a hint of disdain and whispered to Yujian, “How did you know we would escape tonight?”
Fifteen immediately spread his hands, indicating that he hadn’t leaked any secrets.
Yujian shrugged. “I overheard my master and the others talking. The Venerable One replied that he wants to keep your life and reminded them to strengthen the guard on the residence, saying that you would definitely not be at peace these next few days.”
Time was running short, and they couldn’t afford to keep chatting. Fifteen, disregarding Qiu Fuxue’s resistance, stuffed him into the hole. “See? The Venerable One understands you best.”
“…It was you who suggested escaping, though.”
Qiu Fuxue’s shoulders ached from being scraped by the stones in the hole. Behind him, Fifteen turned into a beam of light and got out effortlessly.
Fifteen leaned back into the hole and fist-bumped Yujian inside. “Thanks, brother. I’ll buy you drinks later!”
Once they were out of the General’s Residence, the rest of the journey was much easier. Fifteen told Qiu Fuxue to close his eyes and pulled him into the air, flying them out of the central city.
Qiu Fuxue wasn’t afraid of heights, so he didn’t close his eyes at all. As they flew through the air, he saw Qingming Palace getting smaller and smaller below, and a bad feeling suddenly rose in his heart.
He shook his head in the end. Maybe he was just being paranoid.
Fifteen brought him to a broken stone bridge. Where the two cracked parts of the stone bridge met, there was a dark demonic vortex, its faint glow fluctuating and slowly rotating, sucking in nearby living beings.
Qiu Fuxue pried open Fifteen’s hand on his wrist. “You’ve been hiding your true strength.”
Flying thousands of miles in an instant was not something an ordinary jailer could do.
Fifteen rubbed the warmth from his fingertips. “It’s no big deal. Your sense of caution is too strong.”
“This place is called the Soul-Breaking Bridge. As long as you cross it, you can go anywhere you want.”
Qiu Fuxue walked forward and looked at the depth of the gap. It was comparable to the Abyss of Ten Thousand Tribulations. “There are so many strange places in the Demon Realm… What will happen if I can’t cross?”
“Your soul will break~” Fifteen said with a nonchalant face.
Qiu Fuxue sat down on the ground, trying to circulate his Spiritual Orb. However, under the restriction of the demonic energy, no matter how he called out to it, the Spiritual Orb remained motionless, still wrapped in withered spiritual energy.
“I can’t use any spiritual power at all. I can’t cross.”
Fifteen sat down close to him. “That won’t work. The demonic energy fluctuations around the Soul-Breaking Bridge are strong. Using spiritual power can only barely protect yourself. Even if the Demon Venerable came, he wouldn’t be able to take you across.”
With that, he reached out and placed his palm on Qiu Fuxue’s back. “Try to control your Spiritual Orb again. I’ll help you disperse the Demon Venerable’s aura.”
Qiu Fuxue naturally wouldn’t let a stranger invade his Spiritual Orb. He stood up and refused Fifteen’s kind offer. Just as he was about to think of another way, a familiar aura quickly approached.
His heart tightened, and Qiu Fuxue hurriedly pulled Fifteen to a safe spot. He heard a loud noise. The place they had just been was now a pile of shattered stones, raising a cloud of dust.
With a deep, cold grunt, dark red demonic energy gathered and dissipated. Soon, a tall figure of a man gradually appeared.
Fifteen scratched his head, at a loss. “This is bad…”
The long spear dragged on the ground, making a sharp, grating sound. Jiufang Cangze closed in, his cold gaze never leaving Qiu Fuxue.
“Little fellow, you’ve made me look for you so hard.”
Fifteen pulled Qiu Fuxue back step by step, with the Soul-Breaking Bridge’s gap behind them. “We just escaped. We didn’t even go anywhere else, did we…?”
He was still talking so much at a time like this. Qiu Fuxue gave him a helpless glance and then looked at Jiufang Cangze through gritted teeth.
Perhaps realizing his aura was too strong, Jiufang Cangze stopped and offered Qiu Fuxue a chance, extending his hand. “Come here, come to me.”
This time, without waiting for Fifteen to say something shocking, Qiu Fuxue said coldly, “In your dreams!”
Jiufang Cangze’s face darkened, and he raised his spear, leaving a scar on the hard stone bridge.
Qiu Fuxue looked at Fifteen beside him. The latter pouted, “Don’t look at me. I can’t beat him.”
As he hesitated, a cold light flashed before his eyes. Fifteen gritted his teeth, grabbed Qiu Fuxue’s hand, and leaped into the gap of the Soul-Breaking Bridge.
His loud cry echoed in mid-air—”Venerable One, please tell my cousin I’m safe!”
