- Chapter 19 - Demonic Pet and a Good Friend
For several days, all was quiet. Qiu Fuxue was able to settle down in the General’s manor, but whenever he saw Gu Mian, he couldn’t help but feel guilty and anxious.
Ye Chu was extremely good to Gu Mian, taking care of him in every way. But the better their relationship, the more Qiu Fuxue felt he had wronged Gu Mian. He also started to see Ye Chu differently—the person who seemed upright in battle was actually unfaithful in love.
But the root cause of all this was Jiufang Cangze.
Every time he thought of that wicked demon lord, it ignited hatred in Qiu Fuxue’s heart.
He couldn’t get rid of the shackles, so he wore them while doing menial chores.
One day, Qiu Fuxue was sweeping the courtyard and saw Ye Chu entertaining a guest from a distance.
Ye Chu’s status was prominent in the Demon Realm. He wondered who was important enough to be personally welcomed by him.
Unable to suppress his curiosity, Qiu Fuxue continued his work but paid close attention to the guest.
“Stop looking. That’s the famous demonic doctor from the city. The General specifically invited him to treat the young master.”
A servant working with him rolled his eyes and explained.
“Is the young master’s health that bad?” Qiu Fuxue asked softly, as he had noticed that Gu Mian had been taking medicine constantly since he arrived.
“It’s all because of you bastards from the Immortal Realm!” The servant deliberately increased his force, dragging the stiff broom across Qiu Fuxue’s bare feet, leaving behind red marks.
“The young master was injured by your people and was bedridden for more than half a month! The General invited many famous doctors to save him!”
Qiu Fuxue was silent for a moment, then his voice became so low it was like he was talking to himself. “But I didn’t feel any spiritual energy fluctuations on him.”
Logically, injuries from a spiritual energy attack would leave some kind of trace, but Gu Mian’s aura was so pure that it made one think he had never left the Demon Realm.
“What did you say?” The servant didn’t hear his muttering.
“Nothing.” Qiu Fuxue shook his head and suppressed the strange guess.
His most important task now was to figure out how to escape the Demon Realm before Jiufang Cangze came to get him.
When it was time for dinner, Qiu Fuxue looked at the sour, foul-smelling swill in front of him and couldn’t swallow it. Since he could survive without eating, he put down the bowl, which angered the manager who was looking for trouble. The manager poured the bowl of swill directly over his head.
“What happened?”
At that moment, Gu Mian happened to walk by. He smelled a sour odor and wrinkled his nose in disgust.
Qiu Fuxue knelt on the ground with his eyelashes lowered, looking obedient.
The manager smiled obsequiously. “Young master, this servant doesn’t know what’s good for him and made a mistake. I’m teaching him a lesson!”
“Don’t kill him.”
Gu Mian was not interested in what kind of trouble Qiu Fuxue had caused. He just gave him a disgusted look and left.
Behind him, a small, gray furball with four short legs waddled along, following him excitedly.
This furball must have been a pet demon beast that Gu Mian kept to relieve boredom. It was small and fluffy with big, round eyes.
The little guy was playful. He first circled around Qiu Fuxue. Qiu Fuxue couldn’t resist and reached out to touch its fluffy tail.
It was soft and warm, and it felt great.
After Gu Mian left, the little furball also left. And because of the little grab he couldn’t resist, Qiu Fuxue was whipped by the manager.
“You worthless thing! How dare you touch the young master’s pet!”
Although he was beaten, it didn’t diminish his enthusiasm for the little gray furball.
It was strange. Qiu Fuxue had been strictly disciplined since childhood and had never truly liked anything from the bottom of his heart. But from the moment he saw the little furball, his heart felt itchy, and he couldn’t help but want to touch it.
Maybe this was what liking something felt like, he thought. It was different from the forced liking from the Joy Parasite.
In the following days, the little furball often ran around the courtyard. Qiu Fuxue would steal moments of leisure to catch and play with it, and he would feed it green leaves he picked from the flower bed. A few times, he was almost caught by Gu Mian.
“So you’re a vegetarian.”
His bony fingers stroked the fluffy little body. The little guy was happily chewing on a green leaf.
In his impression, demon beasts were all vicious and ruthless, and they devoured people whole. This was the first time he had seen a vegetarian demon beast.
“Gray Gray loves to eat Star-Gazing Flowers the most.”
A tender voice of a child rang out. Qiu Fuxue turned his head and saw a boy about ten years old standing behind him, holding a few purple flowers.
He had seen this child when Ye Chu was welcoming guests that day. He had heard that he was the demonic doctor’s little apprentice.
“Is it called Gray Gray?”
The boy nodded and sprinkled the Star-Gazing Flowers in front of the little furball. The little guy smelled them and pounced on them, devouring them.
“My master and I picked Gray Gray up on our way here. The young master, Gu Mian, liked him, so we gave him to him.”
The little gray furball hummed twice in response, as if agreeing with the boy’s words.
Qiu Fuxue lowered his eyes, occasionally poking the furry tail with his finger. The shackles on his wounded wrist swayed back and forth.
The little boy curiously looked at him. “Are you Qiu Fuxue? The legendary Fuxue Immortal Lord?”
“You recognize me?”
“Of course! The whole Demon Realm knew about it the first day the Demon Lord captured you!”
Qiu Fuxue’s lips twitched. “Your news spreads fast…”
The little boy giggled and leaned in close, almost touching his face. “But you’re really handsome. No wonder you gained the Demon Lord’s favor.”
Qiu Fuxue recalled the absurd things he had done with Jiufang Cangze. “He’s just humiliating me.”
The little boy didn’t care about his opinion at all. He said enthusiastically, “Immortal Lord, for Gray Gray’s sake, can we be friends?”
Qiu Fuxue was confused.
“If I’m friends with the Demon Lord’s enemy, I can brag to my friends when I get back!”
“…”
The child had a good idea, but the Demon Lord might not be happy about it.
The little boy’s name was Yu Jian. Qiu Fuxue extended his fist and bumped it with the other’s, officially making them friends.
The two of them squatted in front of Gray Gray and chatted for a while. Then they heard Gu Mian’s voice, calling the little demon beast to come back.
Yu Jian quickly picked up the eating Gray Gray and ran over, telling Qiu Fuxue to hide.
Qiu Fuxue shrank behind a big tree, feeling sad. It seemed that everyone in the General’s manor knew that Gu Mian didn’t like him.
He couldn’t believe that he had become friends with a demon in such a muddled way, all because of Gray Gray.
Whenever he had the chance, Yu Jian would bring him some leftover food. Although it didn’t look very appetizing, it tasted better than swill.
Qiu Fuxue couldn’t resist the temptation of food. He devoured it ravenously. One day, Yu Jian was sharing a pastry with him when the demonic doctor who was looking for him caught them red-handed.
“M-Master!”
Yu Jian stood at attention nervously.
The demonic doctor didn’t even look at him. Instead, he looked at Qiu Fuxue with a subtle expression.
Qiu Fuxue followed his gaze. It was his wrist shackles. He then realized something was wrong. The person was actually looking at the golden cage mark underneath the shackles.
“Oh, so you’re a little canary.” The demonic doctor smiled. “It looks like the Demon Lord really dotes on you.”
Qiu Fuxue silently pulled down his sleeve to cover the cursed mark that had been carved into his bones.
