After Faking Her Death, the Top Actress Gets Amnesia - Chapter 7
Chapter 7
The girl put away her phone’s camera, but her voice still held an unmistakable excitement. “It really is you, Jiang Wendu! I love your show, Born of City Springs and Trees. Can I get a photo with you alone?”
Jiang Wendu’s thoughts were still stuck on the sound of the camera shutter. Xiao Ru decisively rejected the request for her. “Sorry, you’ve got the wrong person!”
She pushed Jiang Wendu back. “Go back to the room!”
The girl was stunned.
Jiang Wendu snapped out of it, giving the girl a brief, awkward smile before turning and walking quickly back toward the hospital room.
After what happened back then, she was a little afraid of being filmed by people holding cameras right in front of her face. The girl had forgotten to turn off the shutter sound, and the sudden click made her feel scared.
Jiang Wendu hadn’t fully recovered even after she reached the hospital room.
Yi Lan, unable to fight off her exhaustion, had fallen asleep. Jiang Wendu sat on the stool in front of the bed, and watching her breathe deeply and shallowly, she slowly calmed down.
Soon, Captain Lu, the hospital director, the doctors, and others came to the room, with Xiao Ru trailing behind them.
“This is Ms. Jiang,” Captain Lu introduced to the director. “She’s been helping take care of her since she came to the hospital.”
The director, who looked about 55 or 56, was short, slightly plump, and had a kind, benevolent look. She reached out her hand. “Thank you, Ms. Jiang. You’ve been a great help! My name is Qi, and I’m the director of Cloud Mountain Sanatorium.”
Jiang Wendu politely shook her hand. “Director Qi, you’re too kind. It’s the least I could do.”
After the two greeted each other, Captain Lu continued the handover with the director. “You’re already aware of the general situation. For the specific details, you can discuss them with Dr. Qin. If you need any help in the future, you can contact us at any time.”
“Yes, of course! And thank you, Captain Lu. If you hadn’t handled this so well, it could have been a disaster.”
Captain Lu responded with a professional attitude. “In the future, for patients like her, if they get lost, you should call the police immediately. We were lucky the rescue was timely this time; a little later, and her life might not have been saved.”
“Yes, yes. It was our oversight this time. We will definitely be more careful in the future,” the director said repeatedly, her attitude toward admitting fault almost too eager.
Captain Lu didn’t say much more and turned to Jiang Wendu. “Ms. Jiang, the patient has been properly taken care of. If you have other things to do, you can leave now. Thank you again for your cooperation and help. Afterward, we will write a letter of commendation for your actions and post it on all official platforms.”
Jiang Wendu shook her head. “That’s not necessary, Captain Lu. I didn’t really do much.”
“It is necessary!” Little Liu, a police officer next to her, quickly interjected. “Ms. Jiang, you took great care of the patient. We must write you a letter of commendation and publicize it for everyone to see!”
Jiang Wendu was amused by him and said, “Okay,” without being overly polite.
The police had mostly completed their handover, leaving Director Qi and the doctor to communicate.
“Dr. Qin, given her current condition, you don’t recommend transferring her to another hospital, right? I’d like to ask what kind of treatment period is needed if she stays here. I have a lot on my plate, and traveling back and forth between Acheng and Yuncheng might be too much for me.”
The doctor thought for a second and answered truthfully. “My suggestion is not to put her through any more stress for now. When the patient’s condition is a little more stable, she can go back to Yuncheng and receive treatment at her original hospital.”
The director’s face showed some difficulty. She then asked, “What if I hire a caretaker to look after her?”
“It would be best to have someone a little familiar with her by her side,” the doctor interrupted, explaining with emphasis. “The patient’s physical and emotional states are not very stable right now. If it’s a stranger, she might resist. If any sudden situations arise, a caretaker can’t take on that responsibility.”
“Oh, okay. Then I’ll make some arrangements,” the director said, clearly reluctant, but she agreed for now since the police were still there.
Jiang Wendu was suspicious of her attitude. She hesitated, wanting to say something. At that moment, the person on the bed suddenly let out a scream. Before anyone could react, Jiang Wendu rushed to her side.
“Yi Lan, it’s okay, it’s okay. Don’t be scared!” She continuously stroked Yi Lan’s chest to comfort her.
The sleeping woman frowned, looking incredibly distressed. After a few seconds, she began to cry and murmur, “Wendu… don’t…”
Jiang Wendu couldn’t hear what she was saying, so she leaned her ear closer to listen carefully. She then heard her say, “Wendu, don’t leave. Don’t abandon me.”
In that moment, Jiang Wendu’s heart ached. She held Yi Lan’s hand, pressing it against her own cheek to soothe her. “Don’t worry, Yi Lan. I won’t leave. I’ll stay right by your side. I won’t leave…”
Finally, Yi Lan’s tense body relaxed under Jiang Wendu’s repeated comforts.
Jiang Wendu stood up, looked at Captain Lu and Director Qi, and without thinking, a sentence came out of her mouth. “How about I take care of her during this time?”
“Jiang Wendu!” Xiao Ru looked over nervously when she heard her words.
Jiang Wendu gave her a small smile and, ignoring her opposition, looked at Director Qi and Captain Lu again. “I only have one opening scene for ‘First Flower Goddess’ the day after tomorrow, and then I’m free. I happen to have time to take care of her, and besides, the patient really seems to rely on me.”
Before Captain Lu could speak, Director Qi cut in. “That’s wonderful, Ms. Jiang. You’re truly beautiful and kind-hearted. Yi Lan does enjoy watching your TV shows. If you’re willing to take care of her, I think she’ll recover much faster, won’t she, Doctor?”
She looked at the doctor as she spoke. The doctor clearly sensed that she was trying to shirk responsibility. He glanced at Captain Lu’s face.
“Ms. Jiang,” Captain Lu turned to Jiang Wendu, his tone full of advice. “Dr. Qin just said that the patient’s physical and emotional states are unstable. If something goes wrong, you might have to bear the responsibility, so you need to think this through carefully.”
As soon as Captain Lu finished speaking, before Jiang Wendu could react, the director immediately vouched for her. “That won’t happen. Ms. Jiang is kindly helping us. We at the sanatorium are grateful; we wouldn’t hold her responsible. Besides, I truly have my hands full and can’t be in two places at once.”
Her attempt to pass the buck was too obvious. Captain Lu noticed and gave her a flat look. Director Qi’s smile froze for a moment but was quickly hidden.
Captain Lu took in her expression but didn’t say much more, only telling Jiang Wendu, “Just make sure you two have communicated well.”
Xiao Ru was desperately signaling to Jiang Wendu, but she still took on the responsibility without hesitation.
Director Qi’s relief was obvious.
Captain Lu and his team, seeing that the handover was mostly complete, headed back. The doctor, after waiting for the last bit of fluid to flow from the IV and pulling out the needle, also left the room. Only Jiang Wendu, Xiao Ru, and the director were left.
The director’s attitude toward Jiang Wendu was overly enthusiastic, and she said a bunch of polite things, but ever since she tried to shirk her responsibility, Jiang Wendu had lost all good feelings toward her. Her good upbringing, however, made her maintain a peaceful demeanor on the surface.
Qi Hongyu kept telling Jiang Wendu about her difficulties and busy schedule. Jiang Wendu, while dealing with her, would occasionally look up at Xiao Ru, giving her a small look of acknowledgment.
Xiao Ru noticed but ignored her, standing in the room with her baseball cap on, saying nothing.
Soon, Yi Lan woke up.
She felt the surroundings were a little noisy and slightly lifted her eyelids. A heavy darkness pressed down on her, making it hard to see everything clearly. After a while, her vision gradually brightened. She looked around, searching for Jiang Wendu’s silhouette.
At that moment, Jiang Wendu also turned her head, and seeing her awake, she quickly went over and held her hand. “You’re awake, Yi Lan. How do you feel? Is there anything uncomfortable?”
Yi Lan shook her head, her gaze moving between the IV drip beside her and the back of her hand where the needle had been removed.
Seeing this, Jiang Wendu’s tone became cheerful as she explained. “The IV is done. The doctor took the needle out for you. You’re free to move around now. Are you happy?”
Yi Lan’s long eyelashes drooped. She thought about what Jiang Wendu had said with the confusion of someone who had just woken up. After a while, she slightly raised her hand, signaling for Jiang Wendu to help her up.
At this time, Director Qi also came over. “Oh, Lanlan is awake? How do you feel? Does your heart still hurt?”
Yi Lan looked over at the voice. She didn’t recognize this person, but the moment the other woman reached out, her body involuntarily shivered.
Jiang Wendu also noticed her reaction and instinctively put her elbow in front to block her. She then realized she had overreacted and quickly explained with a smile. “I’m sorry, Director Qi. After spending these last few hours with Yi Lan, I’ve noticed she’s a little shy around strangers, so I just subconsciously…”
She stopped halfway through, feeling awkward. Director Qi quickly waved her hand to save the situation. “Oh, it’s nothing. She really is a bit withdrawn. She rarely lets others touch her at the sanatorium.”
Jiang Wendu accepted her understanding gracefully and then looked at Yi Lan, her gaze warm and gentle. “Do you want to sit up? I’ll help you?”
Yi Lan silently raised her arm in agreement.
Jiang Wendu helped her up from the bed, and Yi Lan leaned against her shoulder.
With a point of support, Yi Lan’s mind was no longer blank and sluggish. Seeing the woman in front of her staring at her, she asked in a slightly cold tone, “Who are you? Why do you keep looking at this general?”
“Huh?” Director Qi was choked by her words and explained, “I’m the director, Lanlan. Don’t you recognize me?”
At the same time, a “ding” sounded in Yi Lan’s mind.
Host, this person is the director of Cloud Mountain Sanatorium, Qi Hongyu. The reason you feel scared of her is because the original host was mistreated by her, which has become a muscle memory.
“Original host?” Yi Lan asked in her mind. “What is that?”
That is the owner of this body, Host. You do not have a physical body in the book’s world. To travel, you must rely on someone else’s body to survive. The original host unfortunately died while lost, which is how you were able to enter her body.
Yi Lan was stunned.
