After Faking Her Death, the Top Actress Gets Amnesia - Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Seeing the look of confusion on Jiang Wendu’s face, Yi Lan immediately became enraged. “Speak! For what reason did you betray this general?!”
Her voice wasn’t loud, but the decisive, battle-hardened aura she exuded was something no ordinary person could match.
Even an actress of Jiang Wendu’s caliber was captivated by her heroic presence in that moment.
She truly… looked like a general, a female general who had endured countless battles, her body worn down, her heart filled with resentment.
“Yi Lan,” Jiang Wendu quickly said, worried she might lose control. “This is a hospital. There’s no such thing as an assassination or betrayal here. Everything you saw before was me acting. It wasn’t real. You’re sick now and you need to rest.”
“Acting?” When Yi Lan heard that word, her heart still ached. Her sharp, phoenix-like eyes turned red. She stared straight into Jiang Wendu’s eyes. “But Jiang Wendu, seven hundred thousand lives… how am I supposed to account for them… how do I account for them, what do I use to account for them…”
In the end, all the questions turned into a series of murmurs and self-blame. Her voice softened, and tears welled up uncontrollably.
Jiang Wendu was moved by her unintentional display of genuine emotion. She leaned over, gently wiping away Yi Lan’s tears, her movements and tone gentle. “I’m sorry, Yi Lan. My script affected you. I apologize. Please don’t be sad, okay? Your body is too weak right now; you need to rest.”
Yi Lan’s emotions didn’t subside with the apology. The tears flowed one after another. Jiang Wendu leaned in, wrapping her arms gently around her. “I’ll stay with you until you get better.”
She could feel Yi Lan’s chest heaving, her fragile heart beating weakly.
One year, maybe a little less than two years. This girl in front of her only had a little over a year, less than two years, to live. She had no self-awareness, yet her underlying emotions were so rich. She would travel a thousand miles to seek justice because of a play and a role. Her heart was full of righteousness; she was more passionate and loyal than anyone else in this world.
Unconsciously, a hint of moisture appeared in Jiang Wendu’s eyes, and her usually stable emotions wavered slightly.
It took a while for Yi Lan to calm down, and her sadness subsided a little. She wanted to push Jiang Wendu away, but she vaguely felt the other person sobbing. Her heart felt as if it had been grabbed and squeezed, a painful swelling. She hesitated and struggled, but finally mustered the courage to push her away.
“Jiang Wendu, I don’t care who ordered you, but you must pay for the lives of seven hundred thousand soldiers!”
Jiang Wendu came to her senses, sniffled, and released her arms. She sat up, her slightly red eyes looking at Yi Lan, and nodded. “Okay, when you’ve recovered, I’ll give you my life to do with as you please, all right?”
Her words carried a hint of indulgence and reassurance. The two stared at each other. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door from outside. The next second, a familiar voice came through the door.
“Jiang Wendu, open up!”
It was Xiao Ru. She had driven over as soon as she got the location. Jiang Wendu had a look of impending doom on her face and was about to open the door when Yi Lan grabbed her wrist.
Jiang Wendu turned and glanced at her, reassuring her with a smile. “It’s okay. It’s a friend of mine. She’s not a bad person.”
Yi Lan didn’t let go of her hand. Her stern gaze held a trace of authority. After a few seconds, she spoke.
“You don’t need to be afraid of her,” her tone was cold, and she emphasized it, worried that Jiang Wendu wouldn’t listen. “You have me. You don’t need to be afraid of her!”
Jiang Wendu was stunned for half a second before she reacted and couldn’t help but laugh. She held Yi Lan’s hand and, as if humoring a child, nodded. “Okay, I won’t be afraid of her. Yi Lan is protecting me, so I’m not afraid of anyone!”
Knock, knock, knock~
Outside, Xiao Ru, having received no response, knocked a few more times anxiously. “Jiang Wendu?!”
“Ah, I’m coming!” Jiang Wendu answered loudly. She glanced at Yi Lan, her tone negotiating. “Then I’ll go open the door and let her in, okay?”
The fingers on Yi Lan’s wrist slowly loosened. Jiang Wendu went to open the door, and Yi Lan’s eyes followed her. She thought, What’s there to be afraid of from a weak woman? Even in her current state, if that person dared to harm Jiang Wendu, she would still put a gun to her head.
A gun—
Yi Lan’s battle-hardened aura rose. She looked around, searching for her long spear. At that moment, Jiang Wendu had already opened the door.
The person outside, wearing a baseball cap, squeezed through the door. She stood there with her arms crossed, looking at Jiang Wendu with a cold face.
Jiang Wendu saw the sweat on her face beneath the cap and eagerly approached, fanning her with her palm to cool her down. “Thanks for coming, Xiao Ru. It’s so hot, and you had to come pick me up.”
“Hmph!” Xiao Ru snorted coldly, squeezing words through her teeth. “You know it’s a lot of trouble? What were you thinking!”
Jiang Wendu giggled, her attitude exceptionally flattering.
Ji Lan, lying on the hospital bed, saw all of this clearly.
“Jiang Wendu,” she called her name in a voice that was neither too light nor too heavy.
Jiang Wendu looked over at the sound.
She saw the woman lying on the bed, exhausted, without even the strength to catch her breath, yet her eyes were as cold as an ice cave.
“Come here,” Yi Lan paused for a half-second, trying to sound as strong as possible. “Stand beside me!”
“Huh?” Jiang Wendu was stunned for a moment, but she obediently walked over and stood by her side.
Xiao Ru next to her widened her eyes. Hmm? What’s going on?! Has Jiang Wendu… been infected by this crazy person?
Yi Lan struggled to get up from the bed, but her weak arms were not enough to support her heavy body. She tried and struggled repeatedly, almost pulling the IV needle out, but she couldn’t succeed.
Seeing this, Jiang Wendu quickly held her down. “Don’t move, Yi Lan. You have a needle in your hand. It’s very dangerous!”
Yi Lan had already used up the little energy she had. When she spoke now, she didn’t even have the strength to say a complete sentence. “You are not to be submissive to her. I won’t allow you…”
“Okay, okay,” Jiang Wendu soothed her by stroking her chest. “I’ll listen to you. I’ll listen to everything you say. Don’t get agitated, okay?”
She turned and motioned for Xiao Ru to leave first.
In a rush, although Xiao Ru was reluctant, she obediently backed out.
The door to the hospital room was gently pulled shut. It took a long time for Jiang Wendu to calm Yi Lan down.
At this moment, Yi Lan lay quietly on the hospital bed. The last bit of stubbornness in her eyes was replaced by fragility. She realized she didn’t have the strength to protect her, or even to demand an explanation. This feeling of powerlessness made her feel hopeless and afraid.
Tears flowed from the corners of her eyes uncontrollably, one drop after another, hitting the pillow.
Jiang Wendu stayed by her side, her long fingers wiping the tears from her eyes. “Don’t be sad, okay? The person who just left is my assistant. She helped me when I was in a difficult situation. She rushed over and was upset with me because she was worried about me being alone. I wasn’t trying to please her. I was just afraid of making her angry or sad.”
She knew Yi Lan couldn’t understand, but she patiently explained. “There aren’t many people in this world who are good to me. I don’t want to disappoint them. Of course, I don’t want to make Yi Lan sad either.”
Yi Lan’s low spirits were momentarily distracted by her words. She looked up at Jiang Wendu and found an unprecedented calmness in those gentle eyes. She said that not many people in this world were good to her. She said that the woman had helped her during her most difficult time. She said that she didn’t want to make everyone sad.
What had she been through? Could her past betrayal have been against her will? But what could she do about the seven hundred thousand soldiers who had died?
“Don’t say so much,” she repeated with a hoarse throat. “Jiang Wendu, don’t say so much. I don’t want to hear it.”
Jiang Wendu smiled and nodded, gently rubbing her dry, chapped lips with her fingertip. “Okay, I won’t say any more. Are you thirsty? I’ll go get you some water?”
Yi Lan didn’t say anything.
Jiang Wendu tucked the blanket around her, found a disposable cup among the toiletries the police had brought back earlier, and went to the water dispenser to get water. She found the water dispenser was unplugged. She tinkered with it for a bit, plugged it in, but it would take some time for the water to boil.
Jiang Wendu held the empty paper cup and returned to the bedside, squatting down to explain. “Yi Lan, the water dispenser is broken. I’ll go outside to get you some water. You be a good girl and lie still, okay? I’ll be right back.”
Yi Lan didn’t say yes or no; she just slightly closed her eyes, silently agreeing to her leaving.
Jiang Wendu gently stroked her head and went out to find water for her.
Xiao Ru was leaning against the wall opposite, playing on her phone. Seeing Jiang Wendu come out, she looked up and asked with a hint of annoyance, “How’s that crazy person? Is she okay?”
Jiang Wendu shook her head. “She’s fine. The water dispenser inside wasn’t plugged in, so I’m going to get her some water.”
“How considerate of you!” Xiao Ru said sharply, but her hand instinctively reached out, took the disposable cup from Jiang Wendu’s hand, and walked toward the water dispenser in the hallway.
Jiang Wendu followed her, trying to communicate. “Xiao Ru, she has congenital heart disease. She might only have a little over a year, maybe less than two years, to live.”
“So?” Xiao Ru responded as she walked. “What does that have to do with you, Jiang Wendu!”
Jiang Wendu was choked by her words. She patiently continued. “I mean, she’s all alone in this world. It’s quite pitiful…”
“Isn’t the院长 (hospital director) on their way?” Xiao Ru suddenly stopped and turned her head to look at her.
Jiang Wendu hesitated, stammering, “I want to…”
“No!” Before she could finish, Xiao Ru denied her. “You’re exhausted after a day of filming. Do you have the energy to meddle in other people’s business!”
“Xiao Ru~” Jiang Wendu tugged on her arm, her voice with a hint of pleading. “We only have the opening scene for ‘First Flower Goddess’ to shoot these days. There are no other scripts after that.”
“What do you mean ‘only the opening scene for ‘First Flower Goddess”? Are you a robot, Jiang Wendu? You don’t need to rest?” Xiao Ru started getting agitated, her tone not allowing for negotiation. “Jiang Wendu, you are not allowed to meddle in other people’s business. After we finish tomorrow afternoon’s opening scene, you’re going to stay home and rest. No excuses.”
“Xiao Ru…” Jiang Wendu was about to say something else when she was interrupted by a sudden shutter sound from the opposite side. She instinctively shielded her face with her hand.
