After Faking Her Death, the Top Actress Gets Amnesia - Chapter 5
Chapter 5
As the mechanical voice’s warning rang in her ears, a sharp pain began to seize Yi Lan’s chest. The white mist beneath her oxygen mask grew heavier. Seeing that her efforts to soothe her were failing, Jiang Wendu hurriedly pressed the emergency call button. The medical staff and Captain Lu’s team rushed in immediately.
The doctor pushed Jiang Wendu aside and conducted a quick examination. Finding nothing seriously wrong, he breathed a small sigh of relief and reported to Captain Lu, “She’s fine. The patient is just emotionally unstable. I’ll give her a sedative shot.”
Captain Lu looked at Jiang Wendu. “Ms. Jiang, maybe you should wait outside?”
“Oh,” Jiang Wendu responded with a hint of disappointment, preparing to leave. But she found that the collar of her shirt was clutched tightly in Yi Lan’s hand. The back of Yi Lan’s hand, where the IV was, was swollen from the force, and the needle was on the verge of popping out.
Jiang Wendu hesitated and looked at Captain Lu.
Captain Lu didn’t know what to do either and looked to the doctor.
The doctor said, “It’s fine. Let Ms. Jiang stay here. It will be a while before the director of the sanatorium gets here, and it’s not convenient for you men to take care of her.”
Captain Lu nodded and didn’t urge Jiang Wendu to leave again.
Under the effects of the sedative, Yi Lan’s thoughts gradually became clearer. She looked up at Jiang Wendu, struggling to breathe. “Jiang Wendu, this General… will not… allow you to leave…”
Seven thousand brave souls had perished. She hadn’t even settled the score with her yet. How could she let her leave so easily?
Jiang Wendu, who had been a little disheartened, perked up when the other woman asked her to stay. She quickly moved closer and took her hand. “I won’t go, I won’t go. I’ll stay right here and take care of you, okay?”
The other woman’s fingertips were icy cold, and the pads of her fingers and the edges of her palms were covered in calluses. Jiang Wendu had noticed this before. She gently smoothed out Yi Lan’s tense hand, and the fluid in the vein began to flow again.
Jiang Wendu leaned in, trying to touch her head. Her beautiful, seductive eyes curved slightly upward, making the mole at the corner of her eye look even softer. But this softness was different from the softness Yi Lan remembered. She couldn’t pinpoint the exact difference.
She stared into her eyes for a few seconds, but her stomach suddenly growled from prolonged hunger.
Jiang Wendu was surprised, and a reaction spread across her face. A playful smirk appeared on her face, and she teased, “Hmm? Are you hungry? Should I go find you something to eat?”
Yi Lan didn’t say a word. She closed her eyes, no longer paying attention to her.
Captain Lu immediately chimed in, “Xiao Liu went to buy some necessities. I’ll have him bring some food back!”
He asked the doctor, “What can she eat now?”
“Just some liquid food, something light. Small, frequent meals,” the doctor explained. “Her stomach hasn’t had food in a long time. Eating too much at once might be too much for it to handle, so we need to be careful at first.”
Captain Lu called Xiao Liu and told him to bring back some millet congee.
Once Yi Lan’s breathing stabilized, she no longer needed the oxygen mask. The doctor took it off, gave a few instructions, and left to attend to other matters. Captain Lu also felt it was inappropriate for a man to stay in the room alone with her. After a few more words of reassurance, he also left.
Only Jiang Wendu and Yi Lan were left in the room. The marks from the oxygen mask were deep on Yi Lan’s face. Jiang Wendu got a warm, damp towel to gently wipe her face. After that, she saw that Yi Lan’s lips were very dry, so she found some cotton swabs and a little salt water to dab at them.
Her movements were so gentle. Yi Lan felt the moisture on her lips and cooperated, sticking her tongue out slightly and licking it, the pink tip flashing like a little snake’s tongue. Jiang Wendu was completely charmed by her casual action.
“You’re so cute! My little baby,” she looked at her, her eyes full of tenderness. “How can you be so well-behaved?”
Yi Lan was a little embarrassed at being called “baby.” She looked away from her. She had always been shy, but this woman, Jiang Wendu, always teased her like this, brazen and shameless, like the summer sun, scorching her, leaving her with no place to hide.
Knock knock knock…
Yi Lan’s thoughts were interrupted by a sudden knock on the door, and she became instantly alert.
Jiang Wendu quickly put down the cotton swab and patted her to comfort her. “Don’t be scared, Yi Lan. It’s probably Captain Lu sending food over. I’ll get it!”
The tension in her heart relaxed at the sound of Jiang Wendu’s soothing voice. She then realized that no matter how many times she had been deceived, she would still subconsciously believe this woman.
She felt helpless about her own actions.
But then again, what could she do in this situation? She was lying on this bed like a useless person, without a shred of strength. They could easily take her life if they wanted to.
She closed her eyes again, holding back her last bit of vulnerability from these strangers.
Jiang Wendu opened the door and saw the officer, Xiao Liu, standing there with several bags.
“Ms. Jiang, Captain Lu told me to bring some daily necessities,” he said, holding up the congee bag. “And this. Captain Lu said to thank you for your trouble in feeding her. We’ve already notified the director of Yunshan Sanatorium. She should be here in about an hour.”
Jiang Wendu politely took the congee, smiling. “Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of her.”
Officer Xiao Liu saw how warm and approachable Jiang Wendu was and immediately changed his address. “Teacher Jiang, you’re so kind. I thought actors of your caliber were all a little…”
Jiang Wendu was amused by his words. “How could that be? We’re all just regular people.”
A few words brought them closer. Xiao Liu looked at the shopping bags in his hands. “These things…”
Jiang Wendu freed one hand. “Give them to me. I’ll carry them inside. She’s a little shy around strangers.”
“Thank you, Teacher Jiang,” he said, pointing to the window at the end of the hallway. “Captain Lu and I will be over there. Just call us if you need anything.”
Jiang Wendu nodded, and the hospital room door was gently closed.
Their conversation fell on Yi Lan’s ears without a single word missed, but she still couldn’t understand what “caliber,” “actor,” or those strange nicknames meant. The officer said Jiang Wendu was kind, but she didn’t think so.
A kind person wouldn’t push the person closest to her into a situation from which they could never recover.
Jiang Wendu placed the shopping bags on the rack and came over with the insulated bag. Her voice was cheerful. “Soft and sweet millet congee has arrived! Tastes good, or it’s free~”
The other woman didn’t react at all. Jiang Wendu leaned in, propping her hands on the side of the bed. She looked at her up close, smiling, and coaxed her like a child. “Why aren’t you talking to me? Hmm?”
Her eyes weren’t particularly seductive, but Yi Lan still felt scorched and turned her head away.
Jiang Wendu raised the bed a little, took the congee out of the insulated bag, stirred it gently, and spooned a bit to check the temperature. Then she held it out to her. “Come on, have a bite!”
Yi Lan pursed her lips, showing her resistance to the food.
“Be good, listen to me. If you eat the congee, your tummy won’t growl anymore,” Jiang Wendu brought the spoon to her lips and demonstrated with her mouth. “Ah~”
Yi Lan: …
What kind of person could be so shameless? After doing so many bad things, she was pretending to be innocent and silly here, trying to trick her with a single mouthful of congee. Yi Lan, even if she starved to death, would never eat food offered by her enemy.
As they faced off, the phone in Jiang Wendu’s back pocket vibrated. She glanced back and held up the spoon, urging her. “Hurry up. Take a bite so I can answer the phone.”
As if possessed, Yi Lan actually opened her mouth and took the spoonful of congee, swallowing it slowly.
The phone in Jiang Wendu’s pocket continued to vibrate. She scooped up another spoonful, blew on it, and tried to appear as if she were in a hurry.
The other woman took it as well, even swallowing it faster.
Finding a pattern, Jiang Wendu scooped up a third spoonful and was about to blow on it to cool it down when the phone stopped vibrating. Her fingers holding the spoon paused, but she continued to cool the congee and bring it to Yi Lan’s lips.
This time, Yi Lan didn’t take it.
Sigh!
Jiang Wendu sighed inwardly. The awkwardness of being exposed washed over her but was quickly hidden. She looked at her, smiling awkwardly. “One more bite?”
Yi Lan glared at her and refused to pay her any more mind.
Well, at least she ate two bites!
Jiang Wendu placed the congee on the bedside table and took out her phone. She saw it was a call from the director. He was probably calling about filming. Jiang Wendu hesitated for a moment, then called him back.
The director first politely asked how she was doing, then confirmed when they could film the unfinished scene. Jiang Wendu told him the situation, and the filming was postponed until the day after tomorrow.
It was a good thing her role was only a guest appearance. The former Flower Goddess didn’t have many scenes. She died at the beginning, and the rest were just flashbacks, so it was relatively easy to film. And with her current status, the director couldn’t really say anything to her.
As soon as they hung up, Xiaoru’s voice message came in.
Jiang Wendu rubbed her temples and answered. The loud voice drilled into her eardrums, and she instinctively pulled her ear away, holding the phone farther. Xiaoru’s voice spilled from the speaker: “Jiang Wendu, are you overflowing with sympathy?! Or do you have too much time on your hands?!”
“Shh,” Jiang Wendu winced, lowering her voice to try to calm her down. “Keep it down, Xiaoru. Captain Lu is right next to me.”
Though Xiaoru was displeased, she lowered her voice. “Jiang Wendu, that crazy person hurt you!”
Jiang Wendu laughed awkwardly, explaining, “Oh, it’s not like she did it on purpose. She just got too into character from watching too many shows. Besides, I’m fine, aren’t I?”
“Fine?! You were almost decapitated!” Xiaoru scolded. Then she asked, “Which hospital? Send me the location. I’ll come pick you up!”
“Oh, you don’t have to…”
Jiang Wendu was hesitant, but the other side’s tone became firm. “Send it to me!”
She “oh’d” and her long fingers tapped on the screen, sharing her location. The other side received the location and immediately hung up.
Jiang Wendu took a deep breath, picked up the takeout box from the bedside table, and gently scraped the edges. “Ah, the temperature is just right. How about one more bite?”
Yi Lan gave her a cold stare and asked, “Who was that person you were talking to just now?”
Her speech was archaic, and it took Jiang Wendu a few seconds to understand. “Oh, you mean Xiaoru? She’s my assistant.”
“Assistant?” Yi Lan repeated the unfamiliar word thoughtfully. She then asked, “Does she have some leverage over you? Was the assassination at Green Ridge Peak also at her command?”
Jiang Wendu: Green Ridge Peak? Assassination? What is she talking about?
