Chapter 4: A Taste of the Marrow, Never Satisfied.
Driven by her creative habits, Jian Jixing always sought inspiration in the field before starting a new project. The schedule had been set since the awards ceremony: her Susceptible Period (Alpha’s version of heat) followed right after Sheng Ruxi’s, meaning she was set to leave on Sunday—provided this little “ancestor” cooperated with her.
Usually, Sheng Ruxi was at her throat, but things got slightly better in bed. And by “slightly,” she meant only at the peak of the pheromone influence.
The moment Jian Jixing bit into Sheng Ruxi’s gland, the Omega’s slender, graceful legs would wrap tightly around her, soft and coaxing. Jian Jixing was never immune; the sweet-and-sour pheromones burst in her mouth like a ripe berry crushed between teeth. In those moments, her consciousness would fray, leaving her drowning in the sensation.
When their breaths merged and their body heat threatened to burn them both, Sheng Ruxi would break. Shards of broken sounds would spill out, and she would cry—clutching at Jian Jixing with tears streaming from those stunning fox-eyes. Sometimes, seeing Sheng Ruxi’s neck arched back helplessly, her hands instinctively pulling Jian Jixing’s shoulders closer as if inviting a kiss, Jian Jixing would fall into a trance.
She didn’t like Sheng Ruxi, but their physical chemistry was undeniable. However, the trance never lasted. They never kissed while doing it. And once reality returned, Sheng Ruxi would kick her away without hesitation.
She was the ultimate “use and discard” partner.
“In your dreams. I haven’t even settled the score for you turning the lights on last time,” Sheng Ruxi said, her proud face radiant.
Even if she had begged once during her own heat, so what? Now it was Jian Jixing’s turn. The doctor said the treatment required regular “exchange.” Jian Jixing had gotten her fill from Sheng Ruxi twice already; how could she possibly endure her own Susceptible Period alone?
This was a “taste of the marrow”—once experienced, one is never satisfied. Even Sheng Ruxi couldn’t deny the thrill of their physical compatibility. Besides, her body told her one thing clearly: Jian Jixing was attracted to her.
“If you want me to cooperate, the condition remains the same,” Sheng Ruxi smiled, her eyes shimmering like spring water. “Beg me. Let’s see how you perform.” She naturally assumed Jian Jixing was here for that.
“My mother called. She asked where you were because your phone was off,” Jian Jixing noted, leaning against the van. “She said your brother is back this week and wants us over for dinner.”
Sheng Ruxi’s expression cooled instantly. Before she could speak, Jian Jixing added, “Busy, right? I happen to have time on Saturday. I can go on your behalf.”
What a snake! If Jian Jixing went alone, it would be a silent way of telling her mother: Look how inconsiderate Sheng Ruxi is.
“You’re impossible!” Sheng Ruxi snapped.
Jian Jixing suppressed a laugh. “We’re family, why talk like outsiders?”
“Jian Jixing!” Sheng Ruxi fumed, realizing her own words were being used against her. “I’ll tell Mother we’re busy.”
Jian Jixing shrugged. As she mounted her bike to leave, Sheng Ruxi realized she’d been played. Jian Jixing had likely known she’d refuse the dinner and used it as a pivot. It made Sheng Ruxi feel like she was the one who cared too much.
“Jian Jixing, are you just messing with me? I hate you.” She slammed the van door, but then stopped. Lying back, she ordered: “Close the door for me.”
Jian Jixing didn’t want to comply. Her pheromones were unstable; provoking an Alpha in this state wasn’t wise. Did Sheng Ruxi treat all Alphas like this, or just her? If it were the former, the girl really needed a lesson.
“Insult me, then order me around, then beg for pheromones when you need them? Only you would dare treat me like this,” Jian Jixing’s voice turned cold. “What do you take me for?”
Sheng Ruxi smiled sweetly. “What else? I’m your wife. Can’t you just close a door?”
She was an actress; the word “wife” sounded heartfelt. But Jian Jixing knew it was just a tool. She put her hand on the handle but didn’t move. She saw the smug look in Sheng Ruxi’s eyes: Go ahead, look at me. You say you hate me, but you’re mesmerized.
Jian Jixing had to admit, this arrogant, pampered look suited her. Sheng Ruxi was the “snow on a high mountain,” untouchable. But Jian Jixing wasn’t one of her worshippers.
“Is this a performance, Movie Queen, or is there a shred of sincerity?” Jian Jixing reminded her. “We are contract partners. Twelve nights. Once the treatment is over, we divorce peacefully.”
The families thought they were a match made in heaven. Little did they know neither cared about their health. Even if Sheng Ruxi’s scent was the only one Jian Jixing could handle, it wouldn’t make her lose her mind.
Sheng Ruxi stared at her and laughed mockingly. “Sincerity is the last thing I want. It’ll save you the heartbreak when I marry Wu-wu and you have to attend our wedding.”
Jian Jixing’s temple throbbed. Not because of the insult, but because Sheng Ruxi kept mentioning another Alpha’s name. She stayed silent and slammed the door shut. Bang.
…
At home, Jian Jixing’s phone buzzed. [Reminder: Chu Wu’s Science Livestream starts Saturday at 8:00 PM.]
She had set this reminder because of Sheng Ruxi. Chu Wu was now a world-class professor in environmental science. Gentle and polite, she was the “White Moonlight” neither of them could catch. During her streams, the two of them usually competed to see who could send more expensive digital gifts.
This time, Jian Jixing had promised Chu Wu she wouldn’t start a bidding war with Sheng Ruxi.
She thought of Sheng Ruxi’s “wife” comment. What a fox. Chu Wu’s salary could never support Sheng Ruxi’s lifestyle—the girl needed luxury in everything. If Sheng Ruxi actually married Chu Wu, she’d probably get bored within a day because there would be no one to bicker with.
Jian Jixing opened her chat app. [Little Green Bean poked you (Failed – check network)] [Little Green Bean poked you (Failed – check network)]
Sheng Ruxi had spammed the “poke” feature. Jian Jixing sent a simple question mark. No reply. The ancestor was still throwing a tantrum.
Jian Jixing walked into her walk-in closet. Even though they rarely lived here, 70% of the space was filled with Sheng Ruxi’s exquisite dresses. She could smell the lingering scent of berries on the fabric.
Jian Jixing closed her eyes. Her fingers didn’t touch the clothes; they hovered a centimeter away, tracing the lines of the silk—from the necklines to the narrow waists and full skirts. It was as if she were measuring Sheng Ruxi herself.
If Sheng Ruxi saw this, she’d laugh at her forever. But Jian Jixing was desperate. Her gland was stinging. Her primitive Alpha instincts were screaming at her to hunt, to capture prey.
Sheng Ruxi wouldn’t let her mark her freely, and Jian Jixing wouldn’t force her. She could only soothe herself this way.
As she tried to calm her racing heart, her phone vibrated. Chu Wu was calling her via video.
