Chapter 6: Registering the Marriage – Senior Yu, What’s the Rush?
When Yu Shujin saw Xu Yinyu again at the registration office, her lips tightened into a barely perceptible line—a subtle movement she didn’t even realize she made.
Unlike Yu Shujin, who locked onto her instantly, Xu Yinyu looked around lost, like a confused deer. It wasn’t until a cool hand grasped her wrist bone that a familiar, impatient voice whispered near her ear, “So clumsy.”
Yu Shujin’s attire was completely different from the morning. Dressed in sharp black, with a mask covering half her face, her presence was cold and formidable. Xu Yinyu stayed quietly by her side, passively compliant, like fine sand caught in the tide.
The Empire VIP channel isolated them from the clamor.
While taking the marriage certificate photo, the expressions on their faces were less wrinkled than the photographer’s own frown. The two subjects’ expressions were flatter than the backdrop itself. “Two newlyweds, smile! Think about your sweet future together.”
Xu Yinyu could only think about their mutual release and separation two years from now.
Yu Shujin’s gaze, however, softened in that instant, unconsciously shifting towards the person beside her. The flash suddenly illuminated the room.
The photographer awkwardly scratched his head. “Miss Yu, please don’t turn your head. Let’s take one more shot.”
The marriage certificate photos were barely passable. The two quickly received the small red booklets. Xu Yinyu only held hers for a second before Yu Shujin’s hand reached out.
Xu Yinyu paused for a moment before handing over the marriage certificate she had just received.
Yu Shujin put both marriage certificates into Xu Yinyu’s bag, then stood up and pulled Xu Yinyu into the car. The driver was no longer Chi Xia. Yu Shujin smoothly gave the command, “To Hengdian.”
Once they arrived, Yu Shujin put a mask on Xu Yinyu, specifically warning her, “Don’t take it off.”
Yu Shujin strode with Xu Yinyu to the director’s office. Xu Yinyu sat beside Yu Shujin like a vase.
“Shujin, are you back from your leave?” Huang Jue lifted his eyes, noticing Yu Shujin was accompanied by an unfamiliar woman, sitting inseparably close.
Yu Shujin nodded and introduced her casually, “Yes. This is my wife, Miss Xu.”
The two other people present looked at her in surprise.
Huang Jue quickly recovered and extended his hand toward Xu Yinyu. “Hello, Miss Xu, I’m Huang Jue.”
Xu Yinyu glanced at Yu Shujin. Only after receiving Yu Shujin’s nod did she reach out and shake his hand. “Hello.”
“Miss Yu is truly blessed to have such a gentle and approachable wife. But considering you’re at the peak of your career, aren’t you planning an unannounced marriage?”
News of Yu Shujin’s marriage had already spread, making headlines in both the business and entertainment circles. However, details about Xu Yinyu were quickly suppressed, and no entertainment reporter dared to reveal the identity of Yu Shujin’s spouse.
“Thank you for your concern, Director Huang,” Yu Shujin held Xu Yinyu’s hand. “If I dare to marry, I dare to bear all consequences.”
Yu Shujin gently pinched the back of Xu Yinyu’s hand and then slowly put it down.
Huang Jue laughed heartily. “Wonderful! If you hold a wedding, be sure to tell me. I’ll prepare a big red envelope for you.”
Yu Shujin nodded. “Definitely.”
The sounds in Xu Yinyu’s ears were a jumbled mess. After meeting the director, Yu Shujin entered the makeup room to start her makeup.
Xu Yinyu flipped through her phone on the side. The entertainment trending list was quickly dominated by #YuShujinIsMarried#.
It was chilling to see. Netizens who were frantically attacking Xu Yinyu just days ago, without even changing their usernames, immediately shifted direction, aiming their target at Yu Shujin.
The speed of online iteration and the swift change in public opinion were staggering.
Xu Yinyu stared blankly at her phone, lost in thought, and didn’t realize Yu Shujin had walked up to her. She had changed into her acting costume—a short, tight ancient-style outfit in deep orchid color. It suited Yu Shujin, making her look like a noble, dashing young gentleman walking out of a traditional painting.
“Take the bag and follow me.” Yu Shujin placed a black bag at Xu Yinyu’s feet. Xu Yinyu looked down at the bag. To her surprise, it contained very few items besides essential toiletries, a thermos, and other daily necessities, surprisingly meager compared to the legendary gear of a celebrity.
Xu Yinyu picked up the bag with one hand. “Okay.”
Yu Shujin pulled her to the set, then ascended the stage gracefully, leaving Xu Yinyu alone to bear the confused gazes of the crowd. She stood in a spot not far from the camera, head lowered, her fingers restlessly picking at the skin around her nails.
“Hi, why don’t you come over and sit with us?” A charming girl in a loose, flowing ancient costume walked up to Xu Yinyu and greeted her cheerfully.
Xu Yinyu, wearing a mask, only revealed a pair of bright, clear eyes. When she was lost in thought, she looked a bit dazed. Snapping back to reality, she frantically shook her head. “No, no need. Thank you.”
Lan Zhao had big, beautiful, and unique eyes. When she smiled slightly, the shape was like a crescent moon. She tilted her head. “Then I’ll have my assistant grab a small stool for you. You’ll be more comfortable sitting.”
Xu Yinyu didn’t refuse this time; she was indeed numb from standing. “Thank you. I apologize for the trouble.”
Lan Zhao smiled. “It’s no trouble at all. If you feel embarrassed, could you tell me your name?”
“Xu Yinyu!”
Xu Yinyu abruptly turned her head. Seeing Yu Shujin’s darkened eyes and tight eyebrows, she subconsciously took a step back, bumping into Lan Zhao’s arms. Lan Zhao steadied her by the waist. Xu Yinyu straightened herself and thanked Lan Zhao.
From a distance, the scene looked intimate, almost like a kiss.
“So you’re Xu Yinyu,” Lan Zhao’s eyes lit up. She gave Xu Yinyu a thumbs-up, her voice filled with admiration. “Daring to stand up to Su Baili, you’re amazing.”
Xu Yinyu was startled. Just as she was about to say something, Yu Shujin walked up, her expression cold and severe. “What are you two doing?”
Lan Zhao placed her hand on Xu Yinyu’s shoulder, smiling sweetly at Yu Shujin, knowingly asking, “Senior Yu, what’s the rush?”
Yu Shujin’s gaze on Xu Yinyu seemed to solidify into a physical presence, heavily pressing down on Xu Yinyu’s spine. “Come here.”
Xu Yinyu walked to Yu Shujin’s side without hesitation, offering a humble apology to Lan Zhao. “I’m sorry.”
A hint of displeasure flashed in Lan Zhao’s beautiful eyes.
Yu Shujin wrapped her arm around Xu Yinyu, tightening her grip on her waist. “Sorry? What are you apologizing for?” Then she turned her head, warning Lan Zhao with a gloomy look.
Lan Zhao provocatively shrugged. “Senior Yu is so possessive of your partner. Aren’t you afraid of scaring people away?”
Xu Yinyu was the focus of many people’s attention on the set. Caught between Yu Shujin and Lan Zhao, the burning sensation of being roasted over a fire intensified, making her want to consume everyone with flames.
Xu Yinyu was in genuine pain from the pinching. Seeing the conversation between Yu Shujin and Lan Zhao escalating out of control, she proactively grasped Yu Shujin’s wrist, lowered her voice, and whispered a few words into Yu Shujin’s ear.
Lan Zhao then watched Yu Shujin’s expression shift from angry and irritated to secretly pleased and compliant, like an agitated cat being stroked smoothly.
“Really?”
Xu Yinyu, feeling awkward after speaking, merely nodded at her.
Lan Zhao was completely left standing there. Her assistant timidly approached her. “Teacher Lan, do you need a makeup touch-up for the next scene?”
Lan Zhao looked at Xu Yinyu’s receding back. Her cheerful smile vanished, and she said coldly, “No need.”
The next scene was a confrontation between her and Yu Shujin.
This drama was a renewed work that Director Huang Jue had meticulously polished for a whole year. With Yu Shujin starring, the investment was substantial, giving the director significant power in casting decisions. Many actors desperately sought a role in this series.
The plot unfolded from the female lead’s perspective. The female lead, Xuan Huai, was originally a princess of the Yu Dynasty, living a free and happy life with loving parents. When she was seven, a great battle on the frontier shattered her extravagant, peaceful life. The iron cavalry of the Tuoba tribe breached the Yu Dynasty palace gates. When the dynasty fell and her family perished, the female lead successfully escaped under the cover of a guard, becoming a former princess harboring deep vengeance.
To exact revenge, the female lead disguised herself as a man, studied extensively, frequented bookstores, enrolled in the Imperial College, and won first place in the imperial examinations, earning the appreciation of the new Emperor. The Emperor then decreed a marriage between her and the capital’s foremost talented woman (Female Lead 2).
The two moved from a fake relationship to a real one, constantly probing and supporting each other amidst political turmoil and deep-seated hatred. In the end, they were fated not to be together. The female lead successfully achieved revenge, overthrew the regime, and became Empress. Female Lead 2 set herself on fire on the highest step of the Jade Gate staircase, and her fate became unknown to all.
The drama was named after the female lead, The Legend of Xuan Huai.
Lan Zhao used her identity as an investor to pump money into securing herself the role of Female Lead 3. Although spoiled, she was professionally trained and her acting skills were decent, but every time she acted opposite Yu Shujin, she was easily crushed into dust by Yu Shujin’s performance.
The inexpressible jealousy drove her crazy.
Yu Shujin picked up a script and appeared alone in Lan Zhao’s rest room, looking steadily at Lan Zhao. “Did you understand Yun Sheng (Female Lead 3)?”
Lan Zhao’s expression shifted slightly.
“Do you know when she fell for Sheng Xuan Huai?”
“When Sheng Xuan Huai helped Yun Sheng enter the military camp,” Lan Zhao replied.
“Was that feeling gratitude or affection?” Yu Shujin’s tone remained emotionless. “Sheng Xuan Huai saved you out of sympathy when your family was punished and helped you for your redemption. All your feelings for her rooted and blossomed on the foundation of gratitude.”
This simple outline gave foundation to Yun Sheng’s emotions. “Moreover, Yun Sheng is far more resilient than the woman you imagine. Her transformation from a noble young lady into a brave general relied not merely on so-called affection, but primarily on her inherent nature and capability.”
“If you can’t portray Yun Sheng’s personality any better, I will suggest to the director that your role be recast.” Yu Shujin closed the door heavily after delivering the last sentence.
Lan Zhao paused for two seconds before realizing that Yu Shujin’s purpose for coming here was solely to say that last sentence.
She meticulously considered Yu Shujin’s analysis of Yun Sheng, wrote a long string of notes on the script, and seriously reviewed the script repeatedly.
When the assistant knocked on the door, Lan Zhao tidied her costume and headed to the set, formally entering the scene with Yu Shujin.
“Cut! Perfect take!” Director Huang Jue smiled and patted Lan Zhao’s shoulder. “Great improvement this time, Xiao Zhao, keep it up.”
Lan Zhao smiled and nodded to Director Huang. “Yes, thanks to the guidance of the director and my co-star. I still have a lot to learn.”
Lan Zhao’s eyes landed on Yu Shujin. She noticed that Xu Yinyu was always within five steps of Yu Shujin. When the two sat together, Yu Shujin seemed to have endless things to say and would frown periodically if she didn’t get timely feedback. In contrast, Xu Yinyu was silent, mechanically holding a thermos cup, nodding, and pouring water, looking completely unenthusiastic to be by Yu Shujin’s side.
