Chapter 10: Breaking the Ice – I’m Sorry
As soon as Yu Shujin finished filming her scenes, she immediately wrapped up work and rushed back to the villa from the set.
She was so visibly hurried that anyone unaware of the internal situation might think there was a problem with the Yu family.
The night sky was intensely dark. She abruptly arrived home and headed straight for the master bedroom, but it was empty.
Yu Shujin’s excited mood was instantly doused with cold water from head to toe. Her expression immediately turned cold and severe, emanating an oppressive atmosphere of gloom. She checked her phone for the surveillance feeds and, after a quick check, found that Xu Yinyu had gone to sleep in the guest bedroom.
Yu Shujin immediately walked to the guest room door, glancing at her watch: 10:30 PM.
At this hour, Xu Yinyu shouldn’t be asleep.
Heaven knew how much she wanted to immediately pull Xu Yinyu into her arms, kiss her eyes, kiss her lips, and make her display expressions and sounds she normally wouldn’t.
Sure enough, Xu Yinyu’s unguarded voice came from inside the guest room. “The door’s unlocked, Auntie Fang, please come right in.”
Yu Shujin frowned, but her hand didn’t hesitate to push the door open. She looked down at Xu Yinyu, whom she hadn’t seen in a week.
Xu Yinyu was clearly not expecting Yu Shujin. The surprise on her face hadn’t yet faded. She was sitting up in bed reading, with a cozy night light on, looking free and comfortable.
“You’re back,” Xu Yinyu tried to greet Yu Shujin’s arrival with a natural tone.
“You don’t look like you welcome me,” Yu Shujin stepped closer to Xu Yinyu. She lifted Xu Yinyu’s chin, her eyes complex yet captivating, and leaned down to kiss Xu Yinyu’s lips.
Their lips tangled, exchanging each other’s breath and heartbeat.
Xu Yinyu’s hands were clasped by Yu Shujin’s fingers, leaving her unable to push her away.
This brief separation stirred in Yu Shujin a feeling of excitement akin to a honeymoon. The moment the busy, fulfilling work was stripped away, only Xu Yinyu remained in her world.
“Ah-Yu,” Yu Shujin finally touched Xu Yinyu’s lower lip. “Did you miss me?”
Xu Yinyu’s face was flushed. Her pale pink lips were now succulent and tempting. Her usually emotionless eyes were filled with moisture, and her entire body leaned against Yu Shujin.
“Yes…” her voice was low and husky.
“Why did you come to the guest bedroom?” Yu Shujin asked with a smile.
Xu Yinyu’s gaze momentarily froze. The phrasing she had planned was utterly blank now. She swallowed nervously. “I, I don’t feel secure sleeping alone in such a big master bedroom.”
Hearing this answer, Yu Shujin was stunned for a moment, then laughed more genuinely. “Is that so? Then I was inconsiderate. If I travel for work again, I will definitely take you with me.”
Xu Yinyu forced a smile and agreed. “Shujin, go wash up first.”
Yu Shujin kissed Xu Yinyu’s cheek, gently, like an affectionate lover. “Alright, whatever you say.”
Xu Yinyu silently turned on the black screen of the tablet, quickly exited the monitoring video, and swiftly cleared the browsing history.
Only after doing this did she place the book and tablet on the bedside table and let out a sigh of relief.
The shower in the bathroom stopped. Xu Yinyu peeked out and saw Yu Shujin emerge wrapped in a towel. Her long hair reached her waist, with water droplets still clinging to the strands.
“Ah-Yu, help me blow-dry my hair.” Yu Shujin sat down in front of Xu Yinyu, holding the hairdryer.
Xu Yinyu made an “Ah” sound. She took the hairdryer that was handed to her, bit her lower lip, struggled to turn it on, and began helping Yu Shujin dry her hair.
During this time, Yu Shujin lay languidly on Xu Yinyu’s lap with her eyes closed. Suddenly, her phone rang.
Xu Yinyu casually glanced at the number, and the smooth action of her hands instantly froze. She turned off the hairdryer.
Yu Shujin, oblivious, answered the call, her voice calm and carrying a distance reserved for strangers. “Hello, what is it?”
The voice returning from the phone carried the familiar tone of majesty and authority.
Yu Shujin turned her head to kiss Xu Yinyu. It wasn’t until her lips touched Xu Yinyu’s soft, warm mouth that the uneasy feeling in her heart gradually improved.
Xu Yinyu’s eyes widened, confused. She didn’t dare make any slightest gasp, her hands struggling to reject Yu Shujin’s brazen actions.
Yu Shujin found it amusing to watch Xu Yinyu panic under her teasing, and in high spirits, she played with her hair.
The room was unusually quiet then; any sound would be noticeable. Xu Yinyu could only endure Yu Shujin’s actions, suppressing her breathing.
“Where are you right now?” The voice of the Yu family matriarch came through the phone. “Come back to the old house immediately. I need to see you now.”
Yu Shujin frowned in displeasure. “I’m not in the city center right now, it’s inconvenient to rush over. I’ll have Chi Xia come find you.”
The other party remained silent for a long time, then hung up the phone.
Xu Yinyu burrowed into the quilt, tugging on Yu Shujin’s hand. “Your hair is dry. Let’s sleep.”
After sending a text message to Chi Xia and hearing Xu Yinyu’s gentle reminder, the frustration in Yu Shujin’s heart seemed to hit a happy switch. She put her phone face down on the book on the bedside table, kicked off her slippers, and pressed herself onto Xu Yinyu. “Alright.”
The next morning, Yu Shujin was gently awakened by the warmth of the sun. She reached out to grab the person next to her, but her hand grasped empty air. Sleepiness vanished, and her groggy eyes snapped open.
Yu Shujin opened the door, stood on the second-floor balcony railing, and looked down to the first floor, searching for the person she wanted to see immediately.
A faint sound came from the kitchen. Xu Yinyu seemed to hear the movement upstairs. Wearing a pink and white apron, she walked out of the kitchen with a smile, greeting Yu Shujin. “I’ve made breakfast, Shujin.”
Yu Shujin made an “OK” gesture. After washing up in the guest room, she came downstairs and watched Xu Yinyu busy herself with her breakfast. It was as if the conflicts that had accumulated between them recently had vanished, and they were reconciled, their shattered mirror put back together.
Xu Yinyu made two servings of fried eggs and lean meat congee. The two sat across from each other, able to see each other with a glance. Xu Yinyu deliberately kept her head down, drinking her congee and ignoring the heat of the other’s gaze.
“What made you decide to make breakfast yourself?” Yu Shujin seemed to enjoy the meal.
Xu Yinyu finished the last sip of congee, wiping her mouth with a tissue. She said without any hesitation, “What I make myself suits my taste better, but I don’t know if it suits yours.”
“It’s fine,” Yu Shujin put down her spoon. “I’m off today. Is there anything you want to buy? I’ll take you shopping around Imperial Plaza.”
Xu Yinyu shook her head. “I don’t want anything. What you’ve given me already puts me under too much pressure.”
“Pressure?” Yu Shujin scoffed. She didn’t know what she was thinking of, but when she looked at Xu Yinyu again, her eyes were very teasing. “Do you know how many young girls out there want the ‘pressure’ you speak of?”
It took Xu Yinyu three full seconds to process and understand that sentence. She could only dryly and willingly admit, “Yes, I am undeserving of this position.”
“Don’t belittle yourself like that,” Yu Shujin curved her lips in a smile and gently stroked Xu Yinyu’s cheek. “Between us, there’s no talk of deserving or undeserving. Simply put, there is only wanting and not wanting.”
Xu Yinyu nodded stiffly.
Yes, she and Yu Shujin were no longer people from the same world. With the end of their seventeen years, the real and complex world unfolded before them. They were forced, pushed, onto different paths, heading toward futures that diverged from each other.
Yu Shujin soberly laid out the nature of their relationship, lifting Xu Yinyu’s carefully maintained dignity high up, and then gently tossing it away.
Everything Xu Yinyu now possessed was built upon Yu Shujin’s ‘wanting.’ But when she ‘doesn’t want’ her anymore, how should Xu Yinyu leave with grace?
“I understand.” Xu Yinyu gently moved Yu Shujin’s hand away and got up to collect the dishes.
Yu Shujin reminded her, “You don’t need to clean the table. Auntie Fang will take care of it when she comes.”
Xu Yinyu didn’t stop. “I’m putting them in the dishwasher. It’s just a quick task, and I’m not tired.”
Yu Shujin made an ‘Oh’ sound, crossed her arms, and stood by the refrigerator, looking at Xu Yinyu’s back. Her tone carried a sense of nostalgic emotion. “I remember when you were little, the thing you hated most was cleaning dishes. Every time you’d play a trick to make me do it for you.”
Xu Yinyu turned around and met Yu Shujin’s smiling eyes. At that moment, the wind blew her hair, stirring the honey of their memories.
They did have many memories worth cherishing for a lifetime.
Xu Yinyu couldn’t deny that she still missed the seventeen-year-old Yu Shujin—crying when she wanted to cry, laughing when she wanted to laugh—even when she played little tricks, there was an adorable vivacity that couldn’t be overshadowed by flaws.
“It’s been eight years,” Xu Yinyu rolled up the sleeves of her shirt. “The time we’ve been apart is much longer than the time we were together. Many people or things we once cared about have long vanished through the grinding of time and society.”
“Life doesn’t care about what I like or don’t like. So I learned to be like most people, gradually getting used to considering not whether I like something before doing it, but whether it is useful.”
Yu Shujin chuckled softly, carefully scrutinizing the expression on Xu Yinyu’s face. “What is your intention in telling me all this?”
“I hope you can let go of your seventeen-year-old self.”
The morning sunlight passed through Xu Yinyu’s amber-clear eyes, reflecting Yu Shujin’s surprised face at that very moment.
“Tsk,” Yu Shujin scoffed. “Don’t you think it’s too late?”
Too late? Xu Yinyu hugged the turning-away Yu Shujin. “I’m sorry.”
Yu Shujin’s body stiffened slightly, a moist tear clinging to her eyelid. “I won’t forgive you.”
Abandonment, deceit, and finally disappearing, leaving her alone to personally bury the fantasy.
The love and hate of seventeen were profoundly intense, so much so that for the eight long years that followed, a complex web of emotions was woven, tightly restricting all feelings, until the moment she saw Xu Yinyu again.
All emotions broke free of the net, surging towards one person.
Xu Yinyu answered her, “I will stay by your side until the day you forgive me.”
The response was a passionate kiss.
Yu Shujin cupped the back of her head, her other arm clamped around her waist, holding the person firmly in her grasp.
Even if you are lying to me, Xu Yinyu, please weave the lie more perfectly.
