After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 72
After autumn arrived in Jiangcheng, the weather became unpredictable. The sky that had been clear and bright at noon was now gathering dark clouds by the afternoon. By the time the two of them had said their goodbyes to the director and the children at the welfare center and reached the car, it had just started raining.
Seeing that Anyu was in a bad mood, Shiyu offered to drive, and Anyu agreed.
The rain grew heavier, blurring everything outside the car windows. Everything looked like flowers in a mirror or the moon reflected in water. Anyu sighed for no reason and turned her head to watch the raindrops wash over the glass.
Everything she had learned at the welfare center today felt like a fleeting dream. Anyu felt utterly exhausted. No one spoke in the car; she listened to the pattering of the rain and slowly closed her eyes.
The car stopped at a red light. Shiyu glanced in the side rearview mirror and saw Anyu frowning slightly. She lowered her eyelashes and unconsciously clenched the steering wheel with her fingers.
She suddenly began to doubt whether what she was doing was truly the right thing.
Her feelings for her friend from their youth had long been washed away by Lin Duxi and the passing of time. Seeing her again now, Shiyu felt only nostalgia for her former friend and a sense of guilt.
Back in high school, she had been timid—so timid that even her faintest feelings could make her freeze in fear. That was why, the moment she saw Lin Duxi, she realized there was no possibility for herself.
The day before she decided to transfer, she had sought out Lin Duxi in an empty classroom. The wind outside howled through the cracks in the window, stirring their hair.
She asked Lin Duxi if she liked Anyu.
Lin Duxi tilted her head. In the dim light, Shiyu couldn’t see her expression clearly, but she could sense that Lin Duxi’s eyes were cold. Lin Duxi didn’t answer.
Shiyu asked again how long Lin Duxi would like Anyu. This time, Lin Duxi finally answered—a sentence that would remain vivid in Shiyu’s memory six years later, echoing in her ears and giving her reason to trust Lin Duxi once more.
Lin Duxi had said: “From birth to death.”
After entering a romantic relationship, everything seemed so natural and inevitable. Anyu had never imagined what being in love would feel like. Her privileged upbringing meant she had never needed love.
Yet now, she wanted to be inseparable from Lin Duxi. Every moment of life, she wanted Lin Duxi to be a part of it, wishing they could be bound together forever.
Lin Duxi also loved being with her. Anyu’s parents were rarely home, so the two of them secretly stayed in Anyu’s room, lying together on her pillow, feeling each other’s warm breath on their pale skin, igniting passion, and letting themselves be completely consumed by love.
The young girls were curious about everything but limited by their lack of experience. Anyu had a habit of sketching Lin Duxi when she was bored. Every time she looked at her drawings, she blushed. She didn’t know where to put them and feared Lin Duxi would see them, so she shoved them into a box under the bed.
One day, while browsing online, Anyu saw a set of pajamas and immediately imagined Lin Duxi wearing them. Blushing and trembling, she quickly clicked to order them.
The delivery was received by Lin Duxi.
Anyu panicked: “Don’t open it!”
But it was too late. Lin Duxi had already cut the tape, surprised, and looked at the contents. She glanced at Anyu, whose face was already burning red, wishing she could disappear.
Lin Duxi’s gaze shifted between the pajamas and Anyu. She finally smiled and asked, “Did you buy this for me, Anyu?”
Adding “classmate” to the end made Anyu’s face burn even more, and she couldn’t bring herself to respond.
Lin Duxi smiled again, picked up the pajamas, and hugged the flushed Anyu, whispering into her ear: “Thank you, Anyu.”
That evening, Lin Duxi changed into the pajamas. Perhaps it was the effect of the clothing, but Lin Duxi seemed even more charming. Anyu felt her skills had improved, and she finally asked her during a break.
Lin Duxi gently rubbed her cheek against Anyu’s, her eyes slightly red, her voice soft and hoarse, holding Anyu’s hand: “I learn quickly. Want me to teach you, Anyu?”
The tender words ensnared Anyu, and she nodded.
Anyu loved every moment spent with Lin Duxi. She devoted herself to making Lin Duxi happy, and the time they spent together before the college entrance exam was lazy yet fulfilling.
Yet, a faint cloud of worry always lingered in Anyu’s heart. She suspected her parents were hiding something from her—perhaps something related to the company. She would rest her head on Lin Duxi’s arm and talk about her worries, while Lin Duxi, unaware of the truth, could only comfort her.
A few days before the exam results were released, top students were always poached by prestigious universities. Lin Duxi’s phone and the welfare center’s line rang constantly.
Anyu seemed happier than Lin Duxi, managing to mask her worries. News of an outstanding student from the welfare center spread through the neighborhood, and Lin Duxi’s name became widely known.
On the day of the results, Anyu didn’t want to dwell on the past and spent the entire morning running around the city with Lin Duxi, visiting arcades, malls, and every place they could enjoy.
Lin Duxi knew Anyu was anxious and accompanied her wholeheartedly to ease her tension.
By the afternoon, as the results were about to be released, Anyu grew even more nervous. Lin Duxi reached out and held her cold, trembling hand.
Anyu calmed slightly, feeling her heart relax in Lin Duxi’s warm palm.
The live broadcast slowly announced the scores, and Lin Duxi opened Anyu’s result at the same time.
Anyu’s heart raced as if facing a trial. Then she saw Lin Duxi’s eyes full of joy.
She leaned back in the café chair, gasping for breath.
- An exceptional score. It was enough for Anyu to get into her desired university, possibly even her preferred major.
Lin Duxi put down the phone and hugged her tightly.
“Anyu, congratulations.”
Her quivering heart was enveloped by the one she loved, and Anyu felt weak all over, wishing she could collapse in Lin Duxi’s arms and sleep forever.
But their warmth didn’t last long. Lin Duxi received a call from the welfare center. She thought it was about the results, but as she picked up, her blood ran cold.
Anyu saw her expression change and worriedly asked, “What’s wrong? What happened at the welfare center?”
Lin Duxi set down the phone and looked at her, smiling again: “Nothing. Apparently, someone caused trouble, and the staff there isn’t enough. They asked me to come back and help.”
“I’ll go with you.”
Lin Duxi pressed Anyu’s shoulder, holding her on the chair, and leaned down to kiss her lips lightly.
“I’ll be fine. Don’t you still need to share this good news with your parents? They’ve come home after a long time.”
Anyu was moved by the kiss. They said goodbye at the café entrance. Her heart was still racing as she imagined her parents’ delight at her score and the prospect of living in the same city as Lin Duxi.
She couldn’t bear being apart from Lin Duxi. She would need to rent a place near the university so they could live together.
Excited, she almost ran home. From a distance, she saw the butler anxiously waiting at the gate.
Seeing her, the butler’s expression revealed worry. Anyu didn’t understand it at first, thinking he was concerned about her results. She teased him.
“Uncle Wen, don’t worry. Mom and Dad won’t be disappointed.”
Hearing this, the butler’s tense face finally relaxed into a smile, though his voice still carried some strain: “That’s good. Your parents will definitely be happy.”
Anyu didn’t pay much attention and rushed in, missing the butler’s calls behind her.
Her parents, An Huaili and Yu Yingzhen, were in the living room—one sitting, one standing—but the atmosphere was strange. Anyu wanted to voice her joy, but the words stuck in her throat.
When they heard the door, both turned. What had been hidden was now revealed. Anyu immediately recognized what An Huaili held in his hands.
The drawing. The box. She couldn’t be mistaken.
Her blood froze. Cold rage surged from her feet to her head as her brows furrowed and her thin lips quivered.
“Why are you going through my things?”
Yu Yingzhen’s anger flared. She snatched the drawing from An Huaili’s hands and gripped it tightly as she approached.
“Anyu, if it weren’t for me cleaning your room today, I wouldn’t have realized… you actually drew your classmate…” She clenched her teeth, but her composure restrained her from finishing the sentence.
“You went through my things?” Anyu’s whole body burned with cold and fury.
An Huaili inhaled deeply, stepping forward: “Shouldn’t you think about why you drew these? Anyu, is this what your art is for?”
He grabbed the drawing and tore it into pieces in front of her. The shattered pieces fell, just like her heart breaking.
“My drawing!” She scrambled to pick up the fragments, pain so sharp it almost made her lose consciousness.
Yu Yingzhen sighed: “You actually… fell in love with your female classmate? Anyu, do you even know what you’re doing?” Her eyes darkened as she grabbed Anyu by the collar and pulled her down.
Anyu couldn’t resist. Red marks appeared on her collarbone, faintly visible beneath her clothes.
Though the moment lasted less than a second, it was enough for her parents to understand.
“You’re… quite something,” Yu Yingzhen gasped. An Huaili hurried to support her, and she finally steadied herself.
“We won’t allow you to be together. Break up with her!” An Huaili said, trying to suppress his anger.
The parental authority pressed down on Anyu, making it hard to breathe. She stared at him, her eyes full of shattered light, her lips quivering, silent but defiant. Thoughts of Lin Duxi made her sorrowful.
“Mom, Dad, I really like her. I’ve made so many plans for our future. I’m an adult now. I can take responsibility for my decisions. Please!” Her voice trembled with tears. She didn’t want Lin Duxi to be embarrassed in front of her parents.
Her plea was met with no understanding.
“You’re going abroad, Anyu. Immediately. Cut all contact with her.”
Anyu’s face froze. “No, I won’t go abroad!”
“That’s not your choice. You must go. Someday, you’ll understand why we did this. You and her must break up immediately.”
Shaking all over, Anyu’s anger and confusion rolled in her heart like a snowball. Her parents weren’t supposed to be like this! They had always been open-minded and doting. Why were they now so decisive about her relationship with Lin Duxi?
She lifted her gaze, her eyes filled with broken light, staring at An Huaili and Yu Yingzhen, their faces full of anger. Her lips trembled.
“I got my exam results today. 620 points.”
She said this and ran out without looking back. At the gate, her parents’ bodyguards stopped her, holding her arms and legs despite her struggles, and carried her back to her room.
“Miss, please don’t move. If you get hurt, it’ll be very troublesome for us.”
They placed her on the bed, locked the door, and guarded it. No matter how much she banged, there was no response. Soon, An Huaili’s voice sounded outside.
“Stop banging. You can’t open it. Calm down first. Your mom’s so upset she’s resting on the bed. When you’ve calmed down, go apologize.”
“And by the way, you did well on the exam.”
Her phone was taken, cutting off all contact with Lin Duxi. The room had been cleaned, sheets replaced, and there was not a trace of Lin Duxi’s presence.
Just yesterday, they had shared tender moments. How had it turned into this today? Anyu slid to the floor, hugging her head, silently crying.
Unable to reach Lin Duxi, she worried endlessly.
