After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 40
Lin Duxi and An Yu were among the last to descend from the mountain. By the time they arrived at the foot of the mountain, everyone else had already packed up and was preparing to leave.
The crew was tidying up the recently opened livestream equipment. Seeing the two of them approaching, they adjusted the cameras and settings to focus on them.
The streetlights lining the road illuminated the scenery, and the shadows of the trees danced and swayed on the ground. In this gentle evening breeze, Lin Duxi and An Yu strolled along.
“So beautiful… every frame could be a wallpaper!”
“Isn’t Lin Duxi supposed to be Pei Lu’s partner? How come she’s coming down with An Yu?”
“Why are they coming down so late? What secret thing did they do up there?”
“Are they a couple or not? Hahaha, if no one says anything, I’ll just assume… a private date, right?”
The temperature at the foot of the mountain was far warmer than at the peak. Lin Duxi, wearing An Yu’s thick jacket, felt a bit too warm, but she couldn’t bring herself to zip it down, remembering that An Yu had done it for her. Smiling faintly, she decided to leave it as it was.
Under a streetlight, Lin Duxi suddenly stopped and said, “An Yu, there are so many stars tonight.”
An Yu looked up. The sky was filled with countless stars, an unusually beautiful sight.
“This is the countryside; nights like this are common here,” An Yu said, tilting her head toward Lin Duxi. She hadn’t quite grasped the poetic moment, and was about to continue speaking when Lin Duxi’s delicate face caught her eyes.
Lin Duxi’s skin was naturally pale, and standing under the streetlight, she looked like a celestial being visiting the mortal world. Her long hair fell casually, a few strands sticking to her damp forehead. Instead of looking messy, it made her even softer and more gentle. An Yu couldn’t explain why she suddenly felt that Lin Duxi entirely belonged to her, yet she felt no wrong in thinking so.
Lin Duxi tilted her head toward An Yu, her eyes glimmering with a light more captivating than the stars above.
An Yu’s breath caught. She stepped closer and reached out to unzip Lin Duxi’s jacket. Lin Duxi obediently let her, gazing at her with a lingering warmth.
An Yu adjusted the collar, and their sudden proximity made both of them momentarily pause, the faint, alluring scent of Lin Duxi wafting into An Yu’s nose.
The side of Lin Duxi’s neck was pale and delicate. In the streetlight, An Yu seemed to see faint blue veins beneath the skin—so fragile, as if a single touch could leave a mark and draw a sound from her that would make An Yu’s heart race.
She wanted to kiss her.
The night amplified the intimacy between them. Lin Duxi’s gaze grew hazy, the red at the corners of her eyes deepening. An Yu, looking into her eyes, felt a surge of burning emotion. She lowered her eyes to Lin Duxi’s rosy lips, thin and soft, tempting her in every way.
Yet An Yu only leaned in to lightly kiss a strand of Lin Duxi’s hair. When she opened her eyes, her gaze was clear again. She spoke in a slightly husky voice:
“Alright, let’s go.”
She stepped back, letting the cool air disperse the lingering intimacy.
Lin Duxi’s long eyelashes fluttered open, disappointment lingering in her eyes, the red at the corners still striking An Yu’s gaze.
“What are those two doing? Getting so close! Zoom in and let me see!”
“They kissed, right? They were so close, it had to be a kiss! I don’t care, it happened!”
“Already dizzy from their sweetness… I’ll wait till their wedding to wake up, thanks.”
When the rest returned by car, it was already late. After a full day, everyone was exhausted and hungry, ready to collapse into bed, but the director wasn’t about to let them off that easily.
“Everyone must be tired after today, but we haven’t had dinner yet. You can’t sleep hungry, so we need to prepare dinner first.” Her airy tone caused a chorus of groans inside the car.
“Director, skipping a meal is fine. What we need now is sleep,” Xie An’an said, stifling herself and making a sleep gesture, her eyes unintentionally closed. The livestream comments exploded with laughter.
“Since everyone’s tired, let’s make it fair and draw lots. Whoever draws will cook.” Qiao Qingzhou suggested.
Everyone agreed, assuming a 50% chance, and nodded.
Lin Duxi leaned against An Yu’s shoulder, closing her eyes to rest. She vaguely agreed to the director’s suggestion, tugging on An Yu’s sleeve to help draw a lot for her, then settled down.
Hearing her soft breathing, An Yu smiled faintly, unaware.
The bamboo lots were drawn one by one. When it came to An Yu, she drew one for herself—“rest”—and felt relieved. She then drew one for Lin Duxi, revealing the result to her.
“What did you draw?” Lin Duxi asked, trying to stay awake.
An Yu smiled, “You get to rest. Go ahead and sleep.” Lin Duxi wanted to ask more but was soothed by An Yu’s gentle voice and leaned her head down to sleep.
An Yu clasped her hands, the two bamboo slips inadvertently swapping places in her grip.
Returning to the inn, everyone put their things away. The room assignments were the same as before, and Lin Duxi and An Yu again shared a room without question.
An Yu carried Lin Duxi’s backpack into the room. Placing it on the sofa, she looked at Lin Duxi, smiling.
“Go shower and rest a bit first.”
Lin Duxi asked, “What about you?”
An Yu looked at the bamboo slip in her hand, which said “Lucky.”
“I’ll prepare dinner. You rest first; when you wake up, you can eat.”
Lin Duxi pouted, “I want to go with you.”
An Yu smiled, pressing her shoulder down, “If you insist, I’ll think you like me.”
Lin Duxi froze, An Yu realizing she might have said the wrong thing. Flustered, Lin Duxi quickly said goodbye and dashed out.
Left alone, Lin Duxi held An Yu’s jacket, her heart pounding from An Yu’s lingering scent. She felt frustrated—how could someone tease her and run away so irresponsibly?
She hugged the jacket tightly, her beautiful dark eyes filled with love and then disappointment.
If being together were as simple as words, their relationship wouldn’t be so complicated. Besides the six-year gap, An Yu had hidden a lot from her.
Lin Duxi lowered her eyes, her inner darkness covering her vulnerable side.
After An Yu and the others finished cooking dinner, Lin Duxi knocked on the door of their room. No response. She turned the handle and went inside.
The room was quiet. A lump on the bed revealed An Yu sleeping peacefully. Lin Duxi’s gaze fell on her, feeling an unexpected sense of security. She smiled softly and left An Yu undisturbed.
As An Yu was about to go downstairs, she heard a faint buzzing in her mind.
“Routine inspection. Host, continue,” the system’s voice said softly.
An Yu went downstairs as usual, keeping a mental note. She realized the system might be monitoring the interaction between the main characters.
“Inspection complete,” the system murmured. “That’s odd… no increase.”
Although An Yu didn’t know the details, she took it as a good sign. She sipped her porridge, suppressing a smirk.
“Host, did you complete your task today?” the system asked.
“I followed your instructions completely. No missteps; I don’t want to get shocked,” An Yu said innocently.
The system, slightly annoyed, heard An Yu’s playful suggestion: “Maybe you should check the main characters; maybe they don’t like each other…”
“Nonsense, they’re the main couple of the novel. Of course they like each other. Host, you worry too much.”
An Yu stayed silent, letting the system mutter to itself.
“Something must have gone wrong at that step,” the system concluded. “Before I return, you must complete the task of matchmaking the main couple at all times!”
An Yu nodded “firmly” and smirked.
Later, the system reminded her of the nightly contact check between the main characters. If she didn’t complete it by midnight… the system would handle it in ways An Yu didn’t want to imagine.
An Yu clenched her fists, determined: “I will complete it.”
The system was satisfied. “Contact is measured by interaction: talking, completing tasks together, anything counts. Work hard, host. Don’t engage in unrelated matters.”
An Yu picked up a note pad, wrote a few words forcefully, almost tearing the paper.
“Writing a note isn’t unrelated, right?” she muttered.
“No need to report such minor matters,” the system said.
An Yu rolled her eyes, tossing the note into the trash.
She was thirsty.
Lin Duxi, unable to sleep, quietly got out of bed. Careful not to wake An Yu, she went downstairs to the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water, drinking quickly. Feeling better, she poured another and sipped slowly.
Curiously, she noticed some sticky notes on the table, bearing familiar, neat handwriting.
“Porridge is warm in the kitchen.”
Her heart skipped. Looking around, she noticed sticky notes placed at intervals throughout the living room—on the table, refrigerator, stairs—leading all the way to their room. The final note was quietly posted on the door, waiting for her.
Lin Duxi picked up the note and collected the others in her hands. On the other side of the door, An Yu was sleeping peacefully.
Lin Duxi smiled faintly, then went to the kitchen for some porridge. The porridge was perfectly warm, the bowl slightly hot, but she seemed unfazed. Sitting at the table, she took a delicate sip—the flavor was fragrant and sweet in just the right way.
She unfolded each sticky note, gently tracing the familiar handwriting, then put them safely in her pocket.
