After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 39
After finishing the promotional shoot, An Yu returned and happened to see Lin Duxi standing in the courtyard, devoutly burning incense.
Lin Duxi wore her coat pulled all the way up, wrapping her whole body. As night fell, the temperature had dropped a few degrees, and the wind stirred her loose strands of hair, making her look even more delicate and moving.
An Yu’s gaze deepened, and she stepped forward.
Hearing the footsteps, Lin Duxi looked back, and her previously indifferent expression immediately bloomed into a smile.
“Ah Yu, you’re back.”
Though it was just an ordinary greeting, her eyes looked at An Yu with the gentle anticipation of someone awaiting their beloved’s return.
An Yu replied, “Mm,” and walked up to Lin Duxi. Remembering her earlier devout expression, she couldn’t help but be curious.
“What were you praying for just now?”
Hearing this, Lin Duxi tilted her head slightly, frowning a little. “Didn’t you say that if you say your wish out loud, it won’t come true? If I tell you what I wished for, it’s like we’ve exchanged secrets.”
An Yu: “…No need, I suddenly realize I’m not that curious anymore.”
Lin Duxi curved her lips.
“Teacher An, Teacher Lin!” A staff member nearby raised their voice slightly, drawing their attention away.
The staff member hurried over and handed An Yu a wishing plaque. Lin Duxi’s lowered hands clenched slightly.
“This is Director Qiao asking the teachers to write their names or some blessings. Later, they’ll hang them on the tree behind us.” She briefly explained and then glanced at her wristwatch, frowning. “I still need to coordinate with the props team outside the temple. I wonder if there’s enough time.”
Lin Duxi said, “Why don’t you go handle that first? After An Yu and I finish writing, we can give it to the director, is that okay?”
Hearing this, the staff member’s eyes lit up. “Really? Thank you, Teacher Lin, Teacher An!”
Lin Duxi returned a polite smile. “It’s fine. You go ahead.”
An Yu looked at her, then at the staff member, and nodded. The staff quickly left to attend to their tasks.
An Yu tilted her head back to Lin Duxi, then looked down at the wishing plaque in her hand. She frowned slightly, “Didn’t you just give me one of these?”
Lin Duxi shrugged, signaling that she didn’t know either. An Yu simply assumed a member had mistakenly given her an extra one. She first wrote her own name on the plaque, then paused, thinking for a moment before adding a blessing: “Wishing ‘Hello, Friend’ great success!”
Lin Duxi looked at An Yu’s neat handwriting and couldn’t help smiling. She then took the plaque An Yu handed over and wrote her own name next to An Yu’s.
Their names were side by side in the center, separated by just about a character’s width. Compared to the other surrounding writings, the red plaque had a feel reminiscent of a wedding invitation.
The livestream zoomed in on the two plaques.
【Quick, screenshot it! Dreaming of a wedding invitation!】
【Doesn’t it feel like something’s missing? The space in the middle is perfect for a heart.】
【(Heart)】
【Omg, tonight’s bedtime content is ready, come join my CP’s wedding.】
The sun set early on the mountain, and the group didn’t stay long in the temple. The director assigned everyone paths for descending the mountain, and naturally, they all chose the cable car.
The cable car was small, so filming equipment could barely fit inside. The director also worried about accidents, so the livestream was temporarily turned off during the descent.
Each cable car held six people, which conveniently accommodated them all. They sat in pairs facing each other according to their teams.
An Yu hadn’t looked at anyone and was about to sit down casually, but Xie An’an tugged her over to sit beside Lin Duxi, even giving her a flirty wink.
An Yu: “…” She turned her gaze, catching a glimpse of Pei Lu, who was frowning at her. Her mood lifted slightly, and her expression relaxed.
Lin Duxi sat in the seat, tilting her head to look at An Yu with a gentle smile. The small cabin made her uncomfortable with so many people close by, but luckily, An Yu was beside her.
Seeing An Yu’s soft expression, she suddenly wanted to capture the moment. She reached into her pocket, then froze.
“Sorry, I might have to take the next cable car.” Lin Duxi’s calm voice abruptly broke the quiet.
An Yu tilted her head in concern. “What’s wrong?”
Lin Duxi looked at her, gently patted An Yu’s hand on the seat for reassurance, and said, “I’m fine. I think I left my phone at Bai Mi Temple.”
She stood and walked off the inactive cable car. As she slightly bowed to the three people inside and turned to leave, she heard the door open behind her. She looked back to see An Yu had gotten off as well.
An Yu: “I’ll go with you.”
Lin Duxi smiled slightly and placed her hands on An Yu’s shoulders, the distance between them suddenly shrinking. An Yu froze.
But Lin Duxi only leaned on her shoulder to open the cable car door and said in a lingering voice, “You don’t need to trouble yourself. I can do it alone. If you do too much for me, I might think you like me.”
She cupped An Yu’s chin with her hand, her eyes full of deep affection. An Yu, burned by the fire in her gaze, turned her head away to hide her flushed face, quietly saying, “Go quickly and come back quickly.”
Satisfied, Lin Duxi rose, glanced at the other two in the cabin, and left, leaving An Yu sitting dazed, head lowered, emotions surging.
Pei Lu, seeing Lin Duxi’s previously indifferent gaze and her gentle look toward An Yu just now, snorted and turned his head, his eyes full of jealousy.
Xie An’an, seeing this, tried hard to suppress her expression, sensing the sudden tension. Glancing at Pei Lu, her smile froze, and she then looked sullen.
Lin Duxi walked briskly into Bai Mi Temple, heading purposefully toward the wishing stone she had passed before. Finding the way was easy for her.
In front of the wishing stone was a table with various items. An elder sitting by the table stood as Lin Duxi approached.
“Are you here to make a wish, pilgrim? You can choose any of these plaques you like.”
Lin Duxi looked at the array of plaques and finally chose a pair of love locks. She felt the icy touch against her fair fingers as she bought them.
The elder smiled, accepting the payment. “May you and your beloved be forever united in heart.”
“Forever united in heart.”
Lin Duxi smiled from her heart. She took out her wishing plaque, picked up a pen, and carefully wrote her name next to An Yu’s.
Only the two of their names were on the red plaque, even more intimate than the previous one. Fans would probably scream seeing this. Lin Duxi’s gaze deepened as she added a few more characters below:
“Through all lifetimes, inseparable.”
Her eyes were shrouded by obsession, showing the darkest parts of her inner thoughts. The writing, filled with fanatical love, was her truest wish.
The elder watched her movements, eyes narrowing. Couples who came here before would write sweet nothings or express their love, but never anyone like this…
The elder’s pupils widened. A word came to mind from a couple’s casual conversation she had overheard before, which now seemed eerily appropriate:
Pathological.
A love so deep it borders on madness.
Lin Duxi finished writing, carefully examining the plaque. Seeing their names side by side, she couldn’t help smiling. She hung the plaque on the stone frame, where many other plaques were attached, some with wind chimes that jingled in the breeze.
She looked at her plaque swaying in the wind, feeling her heart sway with it. Smiling, she attached the love lock she bought earlier between the plaque and the stone frame, securing it firmly.
The click of the lock sounded, harsh against the pleasant wind chime tones, yet in Lin Duxi’s heart, it was beautiful. She lightly caressed the names on the plaque, wearing the happiest smile she had had so far.
She took the key, toyed with it, then forcefully broke it in half with her hands, letting the broken key fall into the trash, then walked away without hesitation.
The elder watched all this, then looked at Lin Duxi’s retreating figure, and at the locked plaque and love lock, shaking her head with a sigh.
“Fated suffering, fated suffering.”
Her voice was low and quickly disappeared into the air, unheard by anyone.
Lin Duxi stayed in the temple a while longer. By the time she returned to herself, night had fallen. She picked up her phone to check the time, the light revealing the reddened skin on her palm, evidence of what had just occurred. She looked at it and whispered a smile.
It was late. Lin Duxi retrieved her phone, ready to return. An Yu should be waiting at the foot of the mountain. Thinking of An Yu, Lin Duxi couldn’t help but curve her lips.
She walked briskly, then noticed something glowing faintly near the cable car. Curious, she approached and finally saw clearly what it was.
Hearing footsteps, An Yu instinctively turned and saw Lin Duxi, closing her phone and asking, “Did you find your phone?”
Lin Duxi clenched her phone slowly in her hand, looking steadily at An Yu. Suddenly, she smiled. “Found it.”
An Yu smiled in return. “Then let’s go. Once the sun has fully set, it’s really cold up here.” She reached out to adjust Lin Duxi’s coat.
Lin Duxi stood still, letting her carefully arrange the coat. The dim light hid the strong, obsessive love burning in her reddened eyes.
“All right,” she said softly.
