After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 36
“Because… I don’t want to disappoint you again, Ah Yu.” Lin Duxi’s eyes were red as she looked straight at An Yu, her gaze filled with the kind of love that could melt glaciers, yet deep within it was endless loneliness and despair.
Pouring out the deepest confession, like a loyal believer stripping her heart bare, exposing an unhidden, fervent love, hoping that by showing it, the one she loves would feel even a little stirred—just a little would suffice.
An Yu’s breath caught. Seeing the intertwining of despair and passion in her eyes, she felt as if she’d been burned, instinctively wanting to turn away—but Lin Duxi’s gaze seemed to pull her in, holding her eyes in place. Their emotions intertwined in the air.
A thread of pain arose in An Yu’s heart, spreading through her body, her heart thudding as if struck deeply, making her very soul tremble. She looked back into Lin Duxi’s eyes, letting her own emotions surge, yet her face remained calm.
Lin Duxi stared at the turbulent emotions in her eyes, hoping to find the response she longed for—but there was none. She lowered her head first, avoiding An Yu’s gaze, smiling faintly with sorrow, then forced a bitter smile.
“I’m not in pain anymore. Let’s go, Ah Yu.”
She truly no longer felt any pain; the physical ache was nothing compared to the tiniest fraction of the pain in her heart.
Rather than letting An Yu speak cruel words aloud, she’d divert the topic—deceiving herself that An Yu still had feelings for her. Surely, An Yu must still care for her.
Lin Duxi tried to rise, but An Yu held her in place. Her expression was complicated. After a moment, she said:
“Rest a little longer.”
Lin Duxi looked up at her, shaking her lips slightly, her face still pale and weak.
“Really, I’m not in pain. You have to believe me, Ah Yu.” She lifted her hand to hold the one resting on her shoulder, placing it gently in her palm, as if cradling a treasure.
“I promised, I’ll never deceive you. So you have to trust me too, Ah Yu.” Her gaze met An Yu’s, the light in her eyes shattered and trembled, filled with the most captivating emotion.
But An Yu saw the pleading and struggle deep in her eyes, tearing at her heart like claws, spilling unchecked blood.
She glanced at the remaining distance on the mountain trail, then at Lin Duxi and the two crew members beside them, not responding to her question. She slung her backpack on and helped Lin Duxi up, looping one of Lin Duxi’s hands around her neck, letting her half-weight rest on her.
Lin Duxi allowed herself to be handled, only wanting to feel An Yu’s presence, greedily soaking in it, as if that were the only way to fill her shattered heart.
Just as they were about to start climbing, Lin Duxi felt warm breath near her right ear, and in the next moment, she heard An Yu whisper almost inaudibly:
“I’ve never… been disappointed in you.”
It felt like her soul had been struck hard. Lin Duxi froze, thinking it was merely a comforting illusion born from her despair—but the warm, real breath was too tangible. She looked at An Yu, meeting her gaze unexpectedly.
An Yu leaned close, her voice unrecordable by the microphone, soft but firm, letting Lin Duxi know that the words she heard were real, her true voice.
Indeed, An Yu had never been disappointed in Lin Duxi, not six years ago, not now.
Six years ago, after their breakup, An Yu had been heartbroken and desperate, but time slowly healed that pain. Reflecting on that brief, youthful love, she realized that the seeds of separation had already been planted.
Back then, they naively believed that as long as they loved each other, all problems would be solved—but they were wrong. Once the seed of separation was planted, it would eventually sprout.
Even if Lin Duxi hadn’t proposed the breakup that day, their irreconcilable conflicts would have erupted into separation eventually.
She simply didn’t understand why Lin Duxi had detached so quickly, leaving without a trace of lingering attachment. An Yu had resented her, but never in the way Lin Duxi had described as “disappointment.”
Lin Duxi looked at An Yu in disbelief. Her heart, like a handful of ashes, flared again, fiercer than before, threatening to consume her entirely—but she welcomed it.
She leaned against An Yu, letting her carry her, feeling comforted despite the ongoing pain in her abdomen. A smile faintly curved her lips, long eyelashes shielding the burning sincerity in her eyes.
The summit was almost within reach. An Yu noticed Xie An’an standing at the top, waving and calling out, with Pei Lu beside her.
Though the distance made it hard to see expressions clearly, it was certain the person harbored hostility. Lin Duxi saw this too.
An Yu snorted disdainfully, holding Lin Duxi’s arm to support her strength.
“We’re almost there. Take it slow.” She spoke not just to Lin Duxi, but also to herself.
The crew’s cheers rang out, but An Yu felt no excitement. Lin Duxi was very weak; the sweat on her forehead and furrowed brows made An Yu’s pain deepen.
“Okay. I’ll listen to you, Ah Yu.” Lin Duxi obediently leaned into her, the abdominal pain preventing her from saying more. Exhausted, she only wanted to rest in An Yu’s arms.
They slowly continued the final stretch. The cheers of the crew went unheard, until they finally stepped onto the last stair. An Yu’s tense heart finally relaxed a little.
“Director! Is there a room here? Lin Duxi needs to rest.” An Yu, sweating and exhausted, adjusted her hold on Lin Duxi so her full weight rested on her.
Qiao Qingzhou rushed over. Seeing Lin Duxi’s pale face covered in cold sweat, she gasped:
“Yes, just ahead. Help her to rest quickly!”
An Yu followed her directions, carrying Lin Duxi toward the room. Staff members hesitated to help.
Suddenly, a figure blocked her path. She looked up to see Pei Lu.
Clad in full hiking gear, he frowned at An Yu, then at Lin Duxi in her arms. “Thank you, An Yu. But the rest should be handled by me—after all, I’m Duxi’s partner.” He reached for Lin Duxi, asserting himself—but An Yu waved him off sharply.
“Get lost.” An Yu’s anger surged. Feeling Lin Duxi’s cold body in her arms, a nameless fury erupted inside her.
“What did you say?” Pei Lu, enraged, clenched his jaw.
“I said, get lost.”
Pei Lu, disbelieving, looked away briefly, then back at Lin Duxi, who obediently rested in An Yu’s arms without a reaction—only fueling his irritation. For appearances, he forced a deep breath and displayed his “gentlemanly” demeanor.
“An Yu, you’ve accompanied my partner thus far. That’s fine. But Duxi is my partner—what happens next should be handled by me.”
An Yu didn’t want to waste words. Speaking more would only make Lin Duxi suffer. She simply sidestepped Pei Lu.
Lin Duxi, still in her arms, smiled faintly at the confrontation, noticing the slight frown on An Yu’s face.
“Did An Yu just swear at him? My goodness, so handsome!”
“The way An Yu stared him down—instant crush! But I can’t yell ‘wife,’ little Lin would kill me.”
“Pei Lu, are you crazy? Duxi’s suffering and you’re thinking about your precious partnership? What a jerk!”
“Maybe Pei Lu was like Xie An’an, trying to save time on the climb.”
“Stop defending him. There’s a livestream. He didn’t even tell Lin Duxi anything. Duxi said she had something to do, and he waited a few minutes before leaving with her backpack. Xie An’an knew too!”
Following staff instructions, An Yu carried Lin Duxi to the room, gently laid her on the bed, removed her jacket, and tucked her in. Lin Duxi stopped her from leaving to get water.
Grasping An Yu’s sleeve, Lin Duxi looked up, weak but unwilling to let her go. Her pale lips murmured:
“Ah Yu…”
An Yu softened at the gaze, leaning closer. Lin Duxi thought she was about to kiss her and instinctively closed her eyes—but instead, she heard her soft, comforting voice:
“I’ll get some water and explain the situation to the director. You sleep first.”
Lin Duxi opened her eyes, watching An Yu leave, feeling comforted. Even the weakest often crave more reassurance from their loved one. For a fleeting moment, she wanted to lift An Yu’s face and kiss her—but she had no strength.
“Will you come back to stay with me, Ah Yu?”
An Yu nodded gently, her eyes warm, calming Lin Duxi’s chaotic heart. She slowly released An Yu’s hand.
An Yu smiled, covered Lin Duxi, and left. She busied herself getting water, watching Lin Duxi hold her hand as she slowly drifted off. Then she left to explain to the director.
Returning later, intending to shower off sweat and return to Lin Duxi, she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her head as she closed the door.
She couldn’t help but groan softly, collapsing to the floor.
