After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 21
In the pitch-dark night, a black car drove along a deserted road. Compared to the dry environment outside, the temperature inside the enclosed car was obviously more comfortable.
Lin Duxi tilted her head, gazing at the scenery outside the window, sitting upright.
Even though the person beside her was quietly seated and wouldn’t be noticed if she didn’t turn her head, An Yu still felt her body a little stiff.
In the back seat, a gift box purchased in advance by the driver reduced the space between them even further. An Yu and Lin Duxi sat side by side, their bodies slightly close. An Yu could sense Lin Duxi’s presence with even the smallest movement.
The faint scent of laundry detergent on Lin Duxi lingered subtly in An Yu’s nose. An Yu felt the car’s temperature rise noticeably, suffocating her slightly, making sweat form on her skin and leaving her mind restless.
Lin Duxi noticed from the corner of her eye the tense posture and unconscious little movements of the person beside her, and couldn’t help but furrow her brows.
At that moment, the driver in the front row encountered an intersection and asked, “Miss Lin, where should we go next?”
The sudden voice broke the strange atmosphere in the car. An Yu let out a relieved breath and finally loosened her grip on her school uniform jacket, slowly smoothing out the wrinkled fabric.
Lin Duxi turned her head and said, “Turn right, we’ll be there. Thank you.”
The driver smiled and shook his head. “You are a friend of our young lady; this is what we should do.”
Lin Duxi smiled slightly, tilting her head to look at An Yu, who was pricking up her ears.
Startled, An Yu immediately returned to her usual cold demeanor, meeting Lin Duxi’s gaze calmly. “What is it?” she asked evenly.
Lin Duxi’s lips curved upward uncontrollably. The tension and anxiety from earlier were so easily soothed by An Yu. She shook her head, her gaze toward An Yu serene and beautiful.
“Nothing.”
Following Lin Duxi’s directions, the car soon stopped at a welfare home in the suburbs. An Yu looked up and saw the iron gate tightly locked, with a wooden board on the side painted with the words: “Jiangcheng City Love & Care Welfare Home.” Inside the gate, a small security room stood, with a guard curiously watching them.
Lin Duxi got out of the car, thanked the driver, and turned to go forward anxiously. At that moment, An Yu’s voice sounded from behind.
“Lin Duxi, wait a moment.”
Lin Duxi turned, her clear and bright pupils looking at her, expecting what she was about to do.
An Yu lowered her head, pulled a page from her notebook, took out a pen, bit the cap, and wrote a string of numbers on it before handing it to Lin Duxi.
Seeing Lin Duxi’s puzzled expression, An Yu lowered her head to put the notebook back into her bag and casually said, “This is my contact number. You can reach me if you need anything.”
Her tone was calm, like casual conversation, but there was a hint of nervousness in her slightly trembling voice.
Lin Duxi lowered her eyes, looking at the numbers in her hand. Her long lashes shielded her gaze from An Yu. The next moment, Lin Duxi looked up and their eyes met; she smiled, bright-eyed and radiant.
“Alright, An Yu.”
When An Yu returned home, her phone rang. She saw an unfamiliar number and felt a jolt in her heart as she answered.
“An Yu,” Lin Duxi’s gentle voice came through, soft and lingering, like watching the moonlight together on a quiet night.
Compelled, An Yu glanced at the sky. “Is something wrong?” she asked, feigning composure.
Lin Duxi let out a light laugh, her voice slightly distorted over the phone. “Can’t I call you just because there’s nothing wrong? I miss my deskmate. An Yu, can you fulfill this little wish?”
Her voice, carried by the slightly cool autumn breeze, softly fell into An Yu’s ears. An Yu pressed down the corner of her mouth, looked up at the bright moon, and strolled leisurely around the courtyard.
This scene repeated many times during their two years of high school. Outside school, Lin Duxi and she shared secret conversations over the phone that only they knew about.
It was innocent and pure, the only part of An Yu’s high school life she found beautiful—but even the most beautiful things are destined to be broken.
On a cold rainy night, thick black clouds made it hard to breathe. An Yu stood on the road in front of her house. The locked gate separated her from the inside, and the large raindrops fell on her, chilling her to the bone, making her shiver uncontrollably.
She took out her phone and gently pressed the familiar string of numbers, treating it as if caring for a precious treasure. The rain blurred everything around her, but the voice in her ear seemed especially clear.
“Beep… beep beep… Sorry, the number you dialed is powered off…” An Yu hung up expressionlessly and dialed again.
“Beep… beep beep… Sorry, the number you dialed is…” She hung up and repeated the process.
“Beep… beep beep… Sorry…”
An Yu put down the phone, letting the mechanical female voice be swallowed by the sound of the pouring rain. The rain soaked her to the bone, but the sadness in her heart was even greater.
At that moment, she had nothing left.
An Yu struggled to open her eyes, staring at the pure white wall, still a little dazed. She stayed still for several seconds before fully waking from her dream. She rubbed her temples, calming her scattered memories.
Why did she dream of Lin Duxi in high school, and why a breakup too? Truly, as the saying goes, “daytime thoughts, nighttime dreams.”
Frowning, An Yu closed her eyes to relax her mind, only to notice something unusual in her arms. She froze and looked down, seeing Lin Duxi curled up and sleeping soundly in her arms.
An Yu frowned, feeling a mix of annoyance and an inexplicable shyness. She was about to roughly push her away and ask what she was doing, but then noticed the blanket abandoned in the corner. Her movements froze instantly.
She looked around and realized she was lying on Lin Duxi’s pillow, and the blanket in the corner had been discarded and left alone.
It wasn’t Lin Duxi who wanted to sleep together—it was she who had crawled into Lin Duxi’s blanket.
Once she realized this, An Yu didn’t know what to do. She froze, staring at Lin Duxi’s sleeping form, unsure how to act. Fortunately, Lin Duxi was still asleep, leaving her some maneuvering space.
An Yu carefully disentangled herself, stood on the floor, and gazed at Lin Duxi’s serene sleeping face. Blushing, she quietly walked out.
She wandered outside for a while, still unable to figure out why she had ended up in Lin Duxi’s blanket last night. Sleepwalking? Or was something wrong with her?
With a headache from confusion, she decided to start preparing breakfast while the others were still asleep.
After An Yu left, Lin Duxi quickly woke up. The night had been difficult, her head throbbing until late, but An Yu’s company had alleviated much of her pain.
She sat up, staring at the empty bedroom with a hint of loneliness.
An Yu, has she left again?
Even knowing An Yu might have gone downstairs to prepare for filming, Lin Duxi couldn’t accept the emptiness. The scene was too harsh, tearing at her heart.
Tears pricked her eyes, and she hugged the blanket, greedily sniffing the scent An Yu had left, as if that could soothe her struggling heart.
Don’t leave, she thought obsessively.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed. Thinking it was An Yu, she hurried to check, but it was just a Weibo post notification. She felt disappointed.
Opening it, she saw a popular post in the fan community she followed—a fan art drawing of her and An Yu.
Looking at the content, Lin Duxi sighed helplessly. If only she could do what the art depicted with An Yu—she would give anything.
She liked the post and was about to exit when she noticed the brushwork.
Lin Duxi froze, her pupils dilated, and her breathing quickened. She quickly compared it with her own profile picture on WeChat. The more she compared, the more she realized the similarity.
No mistake—it was An Yu’s brushwork. She wouldn’t recognize it wrongly. Lin Duxi couldn’t believe it. A thought she herself didn’t dare admit emerged in her mind.
As she examined it so seriously, she didn’t notice the door behind her had silently opened.
“Lin Duxi, what are you doing?”
