After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 2
“Lin Duxi? If it’s her, then why am I the one being sent?” An Yu asked without much emotion.
【What, does the host still have feelings for her?】 the system retorted irritably.
“Not at all,” An Yu replied. “It’s just that she and I haven’t been in contact for many years. If you want to play matchmaker, shouldn’t you go to someone around her, like a friend or her manager? Why come to me, an old classmate who hasn’t contacted her in years?”
【No need for the host to worry. Since you’ve already agreed, let’s start the mission. You didn’t come back to life just to laze in bed, you know.】
An Yu got up and took a proper look around the room. It was obviously a hotel room, but more luxurious than usual.
She opened the bedroom door and bounced out.
“Is anyone here? Benefactor? Anyone?” An Yu called out as she bounced around the room, searching everywhere. No one else was present, except she saw some still-warm porridge in the microwave.
It was her.
An Yu returned to the bedroom. Through the mirror in front of the wardrobe, she saw herself wearing the hotel pajamas. Had she changed herself? How thoughtful—she would have to thank her properly, An Yu thought.
She opened the wardrobe and indeed found the clothes smelling of alcohol. Reaching in, she also found her phone.
She had run so fast last night, yet her phone hadn’t been thrown.
She opened it and instinctively closed her eyes. In her previous life, the day after, her phone had been flooded with negative news and abusive messages.
This time, even knowing nothing like that would happen, she was still a bit nervous.
Sure enough, there were no negative news alerts. There were only 27 missed calls and 99 WeChat messages from her assistant, Xia Song.
An Yu curiously called back. The next second, she heard a girl crying.
“An Jie, you finally answered! You don’t know, I almost called the police, sob sob sob!”
Listening to the pitiful cries, An Yu couldn’t help but laugh. This sound told her she had truly returned to the past—really!
“I’m telling you, Director Wan has been furious at the set for ages. Come quickly, An Jie. Am I crying in a funny way?”
An Yu covered her mouth, “Okay, I’m coming. Stop crying, hahaha.”
She grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, wrote a note of thanks along with her phone number, placed it conspicuously on the table, and dashed off.
On the way to the set, An Yu briefly reviewed yesterday’s events.
Someone who told her the truth about her parents’ death had pushed her off the rooftop, sending her back to the moment last night when she had been drugged. Someone else had saved her, and she had survived safely into the next day without incident.
She tilted her head to look at the bright sky outside the window. So this day could be so blue.
“System, do you know who killed me?”
【No.】
“Do you know who helped me last night?”
【No.】
“And my parents…”
【Host, I didn’t resurrect you to answer trivial questions. You should know what you need to do. Besides, these questions aren’t within my jurisdiction, so I have no authority to answer.】 The system interrupted.
An Yu frowned slightly but said nothing further, remaining silent all the way.
Getting out of the taxi, the system suddenly spoke.
【Host, do you really have no feelings for the female lead?】
An Yu thought for a few seconds to identify “female lead,” then replied, “The hazy exploration of feelings between teenage girls—it doesn’t really count as having feelings.”
She genuinely believed she had no emotional attachment to Lin Duxi. At most, it was a sweet and bittersweet memory of a first love.
Isn’t it said that first love is unforgettable?
Perhaps back then they truly loved each other sincerely, even boldly expressing it—but so what?
Those memories had long been stored away in an unknown corner, gathering dust, eventually discarded.
Many years had passed. The last trace of An Yu’s reminiscence about her first love likely disappeared on some dark rainy night, scattered into the long night, unnoticed and uncollected.
An Yu thought back to the last time she remembered hearing Lin Duxi’s name. Coincidentally, it was today.
She was at the height of media scrutiny, almost everyone online criticizing her. An Yu didn’t dare open her phone as notifications kept pinging, giving her a headache.
She turned on the TV to drown out the noise from her phone—and then heard the excited female host.
“I announce, the Best Actress of this year’s Golden Rose Awards is… Lin Duxi! Congratulations!”
It was as if something had jolted her nerves. An Yu looked up nervously.
On the TV, the woman had dark chestnut curls cascading down her back, wearing a wine-red strapless gown that accentuated her already fair skin. She lifted her dress slightly as she walked gracefully up the steps to receive her trophy. Her gaze was so affectionate it seemed directed at a lover. Then she delivered her award speech elegantly.
An Yu couldn’t recall the exact words, but those exquisitely beautiful eyes matched the ever-smiling bright eyes she remembered.
And then it shattered.
“Congratulations,” An Yu clapped lightly, smiling sincerely.
“Cut!”
With the director’s command, a long and grueling take finally ended. An Yu dragged her legs, already numb, to a stool, helped by Xia Song.
“An Jie, I’m not exaggerating. You were in such great form today. Even though the director was angry, he only scolded you once. If it weren’t for the leading actor, you’d have wrapped up already,” Xia Song whispered.
The leading actor, known as the Regent, was the male lead of the drama An Yu was filming and also the male lead of the novel she was on a mission for, Pei Lu.
An Yu lowered her head, massaging her right leg lightly, and smiled humbly.
After being blacklisted online, her company shelved her, forbidding her from acting, cutting off her income. She had nearly been hospitalized due to malnutrition. Later, she learned to be clever, going to sets to play unnoticeable background roles. Her acting didn’t decline—if anything, it improved. Performing roles that required wearing emotions on her face came naturally.
She reached out to touch her right foot. It hurt, likely due to overexertion during filming, and the wound had split open.
Xia Song noticed her frown and worried, “An Jie, what’s wrong? Did you twist it? Wait here, I’ll get the crew immediately.”
Before An Yu could respond, Xia Song ran off. An Yu smiled helplessly.
Her right foot throbbed with wet, painful discomfort. It wasn’t just the wound reopening; it might be inflamed. She hoped filming would end soon so she could take off the costume.
She glanced at the main set. Pei Lu sat in the director’s chair while the director bent over to speak to him, fawning.
An Yu sighed internally; she still had to wait a bit longer.
Two crew members walked past, heads down, whispering to each other.
“The assistant director hasn’t shown up yet? Strange. The director was furious, and he still hasn’t come.”
“No idea. Maybe he drank too much? The assistant director is just here to slack off. Whether he comes or not doesn’t concern us.”
“True. By the way, I went to get something from Sister Li, and guess what I heard? Lin Duxi! Lin Duxi came to our set!”
“Lin Duxi! No way, isn’t she supposed to be at the Golden Rose Awards tonight?”
“No, Sister Li said she saw her herself. I want to see her too. She’s so stunning on TV—how amazing must she be in real life!”
The two voices faded away, leaving An Yu, who had heard everything, frowning.
The assistant director hadn’t shown up today—was it because of the over-the-shoulder throw she gave yesterday? Serves him right! If she had known it was real, she would have thrown a few more punches, An Yu thought, gritting her teeth.
But Lin Duxi shouldn’t be here at this time. She should be at the awards ceremony, at the very least preparing. How could she be here?
“System, did you make Lin Duxi come to the set?”
One second, two seconds, three seconds…
No answer.
An Yu stopped caring. Lin Duxi’s visit wasn’t related to her. Most likely, she came to see the male lead.
The system didn’t say anything either. An Yu quietly sat on the small stool, waiting for Xia Song to bring her medicine.
Even though it was spring, the sun felt scorching. Sitting in the shade, An Yu still perspired. The crew had just informed her that filming was temporarily paused for lunch and hurried off.
An Yu watched Lin Duxi’s excited figure, easily guessing what she was going to do.
Taking advantage of the moment, An Yu stood up, dragging her right leg, ready to go back with the makeup artist to remove her makeup.
“Teacher An.” A gentle call stopped her. An Yu paused and turned toward the speaker.
“Hello, Teacher Lin,” she responded politely.
Lin Duxi smiled slightly in acknowledgment, then looked at her right leg. “Teacher An, is your right foot injured? I happen to have medicine in my car. Let’s go together.”
An Yu knew what that usually implied. She politely replied, “Thank you, Teacher Lin, but my assistant has already brought the medicine. I won’t take up your time.”
Xia Song whispered, “The crew couldn’t find anyone, they all went to see Teacher Lin.”
An Yu: “…”
Lin Duxi smiled lightly and said, “Then it’s my fault. Let’s go to my car to get the medicine—consider it my way of making amends.” She acted pleading.
An Yu awkwardly looked at the floor, missing the genuine plea in her eyes.
“Alright then. Thank you, Teacher Lin.” She could only say this.
Lin Duxi smiled again, then led An Yu away, leaving everyone staring blankly.
“Lin Duxi is so beautiful, especially her smile. It really hits the heart! How can anyone smile so perfectly?”
“Yeah, just seeing her smile makes my life worth it!”
“And she’s so kind, helping someone she doesn’t even know. Amazing!”
At that moment, An Yu, following behind Lin Duxi, couldn’t hear any of this chatter. She was full of questions. Lin Duxi shouldn’t be here for the male lead or even the director—so why was she here for her?
An Yu followed Lin Duxi into her RV. By the time she realized it, she was already inside. Lin Duxi bent over rummaging through a drawer. An Yu stepped back a few paces, leaving space—an old habit from being blacklisted.
“Found it.” Lin Duxi straightened and handed the ointment to An Yu. “Hope you can forgive me.”
An Yu took the ointment. “Thank you. I’ll have Xia Song buy another tube and return it to you.” She turned to leave.
“An Yu.”
An Yu paused, then continued walking, pretending not to hear. She hoped Lin Duxi would understand.
But the next second, someone grabbed her wrist.
“If you don’t apply the medicine, your foot will get inflamed. Please, An Yu, just apply it first,” Lin Duxi’s pleading voice came from behind.
An Yu froze and then turned, slightly shocked.
“You helped me last night?”
Lin Duxi closed the car door behind her, moving closer. She inhaled An Yu’s scent, as if only this could control her desire to hug her.
“I just happened to meet you last night. Does your wrist still hurt?” She gently touched An Yu’s right wrist, and when there was no reaction, she boldly held it and massaged it.
An Yu didn’t notice the small movement. She thought about last night and realized it really had been Lin Duxi.
She immediately said, “Thank you for helping me. If there’s anything I can do, I will.”
Helping someone must be repaid—a life principle taught to her by her past self.
Lin Duxi shook her head and smiled. “Don’t mention it. Take off your shoe so I can apply the medicine. We can’t let it get inflamed.”
An Yu: “…”
“I’ll do it myself,” she refused. Having someone apply medicine to her foot felt impolite.
“An Yu.” Lin Duxi’s tone sounded slightly hurt, but she didn’t insist.
An Yu secretly took a step back, still unaccustomed to someone being so close. Lin Duxi paused slightly, then continued normally.
“So, you’re here to…”
“What if I said I came for your injury—would you believe me?” She looked at An Yu, eyes shining, yet An Yu looked shocked and puzzled.
“Just kidding. I came to visit my company’s actress, Zhuang Yu. You know her—she’s the female lead of this drama,” she explained with a smile.
An Yu understood.
“Teacher Lin, thank you for helping me last night. Also, you can just call me An Yu.”
Lin Duxi’s smile suddenly faltered, but An Yu pretended not to notice and turned to leave.
“An Yu, tonight I’m attending the Golden Rose Awards. Can you cheer for me once?” Like countless times before.
An Yu turned, looking at Lin Duxi standing in the shadows, her expression unclear.
“You will definitely win Best Actress at the Golden Rose Awards. I’m sure of it.”
It was just an ordinary sentence, one Lin Duxi had probably heard many times. But she still smiled, her eyes curving, as if An Yu’s words alone were enough to win her the award.
Watching An Yu’s back disappear, Lin Duxi’s smile slowly faded. She lifted the hand that had just held An Yu’s wrist. The wounds on her hand had just healed. She gently kissed the tips of An Yu’s fingers, revealing the raw obsession and possessiveness hidden in her gaze.
What she wanted was never just a trop
