- Chapter 9 - Keys are Two Hundred and Fifty Each
That slap left Su Tong dazed. He wanted to claw back some dignity, but Lu Wanxing couldn’t be bothered to pay him any more attention. As soon as A-Biao stepped forward, Su Tong immediately shrank back like a quail, not daring to utter another word.
His regret over his impulsiveness deepened, especially after seeing what kind of car Lu Wanxing climbed into.
Lu Wanxing left decisively, and Sheng Xia didn’t linger either. The two met at the intersection, their eyes locking through the car windows for a few seconds before Lu Wanxing coldly withdrew her gaze. In an instant, the car sped away and vanished from sight.
Host, you wouldn’t really be bewitched by her beauty, would you? Logically, it didn’t make sense. In terms of looks, the male lead wasn’t bad even if he was a bit of a letdown as a person but wasn’t this female supporting character a dangerous individual?
Maybe the Host dared to act that day because it was dark and easy to hide? If she’s exposed now, won’t she attract the female lead’s attention?
It’s true that being exposed now is unwise. After all, in the plot, the female lead’s lethality is quite high, and she has countless ties to both the male lead and the male supporting lead. In the original story, the male lead and male supporting lead held immense power, yet they always seemed somewhat subordinate in front of this woman.
However, because the book was written from the perspective of the female and male leads, many details were glossed over. But when these abnormal details were pieced together, they lent the female supporting character an aura of mystery.
Wait? What’s going on? Why does it feel like the more we talk, the more powerful she sounds?
By the time Sheng Xia snapped back to reality, these “ghosts” (the system/audience) had already picked apart her thoughts, attributing her actions to being meticulous, farsighted, and prepared.
Sheng Xia wanted to laugh, but the lingering “after-effects” of her ordeal remained, so she gave up. “I wasn’t thinking that much.” She was simply blinded by beauty and the phantom pain of almost having her kidney harvested.
Having said that, Sheng Xia fell back into thought. Why would Lu Wanxing show up here? This place was thousands of miles away from her company or her residence.
More importantly, why did Lu Wanxing suddenly touch her? And why did she deliberately test her?
Maybe she just thought you were cute and wanted to give you a little “rua” (pet). You don’t need to take it to heart, Host.
Sheng Xia shook her head. Her sixth sense told her she was missing something, but she couldn’t quite grasp the thread.
With both of them gone, only Su Tong remained, his face flushed with anger. Sheng Xia’s attitude today was truly bizarre to him. Her behavior giving him the cold shoulder for the sake of a stranger made him realize that Sheng Xia had changed too much.
Previously, even in a downpour, Sheng Xia would go to a phone booth to call him. Now, not only had she not contacted him for a long time and become cold, but her entire personality was different.
This change must have happened after she was rescued. Before that, her mental state and whereabouts had always been under his control.
This matter was proving to be a bit thorny. He opened a group chat and explained the situation.
%%%: No way, Brother Su. The prey you had in hand ran away? Are you even capable?
%%%: Exactly. She’s just a woman. Besides, after years of psychological suggestion, how could she break free just like that?
%%%: I agree. She’s probably playing hard to get. No need to worry. Just let her “taste” your charm, and won’t she be fine?
%%%: Right? Are you afraid she won’t be kneeling and begging you to stay?
%%%: …&%%#*
The group chat was filled with foul language and filth. The nicknames were so disgusting they were automatically censored into “mosaics.”
He had joined this group back in high school. The members were experts at “conquering” women, and everyone had their “achievements.” Because Su Tong joined early, he was called “Brother,” and people even asked him for advice, which greatly satisfied his vanity.
Sometimes the group would host live broadcasts of their “training” sessions. Su Tong was usually very generous; when he ran out of money, he would simply take some from the women around him a tactic that never failed.
The talk in the group gave Su Tong an idea. He had never touched Sheng Xia before. One reason was her conservative personality, which made it hard to force things; the other was that while her face was passable, her figure wasn’t his type, so he lacked desire.
Now that she had changed so much and he didn’t know why, “taking her down” completely might be a good way to trap her. Thinking of this, he sent a message to the group.
%%%: Is there any “medicine” available? I want to buy some.
Although running into Lu Wanxing was unexpected, Sheng Xia had managed to get something back from Su Tong. Knowing he wouldn’t give up on his “ATM” so easily, she knew she just had to wait for him to come to her.
She didn’t expect him to show up so soon. The next day, just as she arrived at work, she found Su Tong waiting at the entrance of the convenience store.
“Sheng Xia, what happened before was my fault. I bought the water you like to drink to apologize.” Su Tong handed her a bottle of mineral water, a warm smile on his face.
Sheng Xia looked up, a mocking smile playing on her lips. “If I wanted to drink water, there’s plenty in the fridge.”
Previously, the original host thought Su Tong came from a poor family. Every time she did something for him, she asked for nothing in return. When Su Tong offered to treat her, she would only ask for a bottle of water or a bowl of noodles.
Any normal person could see the original host was lying to save his pride, but Su Tong pretended not to notice. He really would just give her a bottle of water every time, acting affectionately as if he were being considerate.
Sheng Xia wasn’t going to indulge him. “I don’t understand why a normal person would use a bottle of mineral water to apologize.”
Perhaps because Su Tong didn’t think he was wrong in the first place, his effort was as perfunctory as it got.
Stung by Sheng Xia’s retort, Su Tong’s expression soured, but he didn’t want to leave just yet. He said in a low, dejected voice, “You told me before you loved drinking this. I remembered it, so that’s why I brought it.”
The original host wasn’t an actress; she couldn’t fake it perfectly. Sometimes, when she saw others drinking milk tea, the longing in her eyes was palpable.
Sheng Xia didn’t want anything from him; she just felt pity for the foolish things the original host had done.
Reluctant to waste more time, she pulled out a bill. “Nothing more to say. Give me back the money first.”
“How could you just leave last time? Do you know how long I waited for you at the square? I hoped you would come back and talk to me more. Are you worthy of my deep affection acting like this?” Su Tong couldn’t help but question her again.
The lies rolled off his tongue effortlessly classic PUA (Pick-Up Artist) tactics.
Fortunately, she had long known how shameless Su Tong was and wouldn’t be grieved by this like the original host. “You’re a grown man, what’s wrong with waiting a bit? And what’s with that tone? You don’t have the manners a man should have.”
As Su Tong looked on in disbelief, Sheng Xia continued: “What? Do you think I’m wrong? I’m doing this for your own good. I can tolerate your rudeness, but what about others? If something happens and someone breaks your legs, my heart would feel guilty.”
Sheng Xia was smiling, but her tone carried a chill.
Realizing this wouldn’t be settled easily, and knowing he had to “give a little to get a lot,” Su Tong bit his tongue and went to the ATM to withdraw the money.
Thinking that once his plan succeeded, this money would end up back in his pocket anyway, Su Tong felt a bit better. He placed five thousand yuan in front of Sheng Xia.
Sheng Xia looked at him, wondering how he dared to try and deceive her so blatantly. Anyone with half a brain would know that such a sudden reversal of behavior signaled a trap.
However, looking at his weak, “scrawny chicken” physique, Sheng Xia wasn’t afraid.
Sheng Xia counted the money quickly without blinking. Her left hand reached out and grabbed a calculator. “There’s been some inflation over the years. I won’t calculate the interest for you, but the total balance is four thousand seven hundred and fifty.”
As she spoke, she quickly wrote a repayment slip on a piece of paper and signed her name. “Here is the two hundred and fifty back. Check the slip to see if there are any issues. If not, sign it.”
The whole process was so fast Su Tong hadn’t even reacted. Looking at the two hundred and fifty yuan and the repayment slip, he felt a sting in his pride, sensing that Sheng Xia was insulting him.
(Note: “250” is a Chinese slang term for an idiot.)
Seeing no response, Sheng Xia didn’t say more. She pulled out a math textbook, preparing for a long study session. Her main problem now was the difference between power functions and exponential functions. Su Tong wasn’t worth any more of her attention.
Seeing this, Su Tong remembered he hadn’t finished his real task. “Sheng Xia, aren’t you going to take the water?”
Worried she might just take it and not drink it, he added: “Sheng Xia, if you don’t drink it, you’re not giving me face. I’m sincerely trying to apologize. If you don’t forgive me, I’ll keep coming back until you do.”
There was a hint of a threat in his words.
But Sheng Xia already had the money. she looked up indifferently. “Then come. Some goods are arriving soon; you can help move them.”
“You! Didn’t you just say you’d forgive me if I paid back the money?” Su Tong was furious.
The more upset he got, the more genuine Sheng Xia’s smile became. “Yes, I’ve forgiven you. I won’t drink the water though. You can enjoy it yourself.”
Seeing her refusal to budge, Su Tong rushed forward to grab her. “I don’t care, you must take it! Once you take it, you can do whatever you want with it!”
Although Sheng Xia’s current attitude was unpredictable, in the past, she would cherish anything he gave her. Furthermore, she was a very thrifty person; she would never throw it away.
Then Sheng Thrifty Never-Throws-Things-Away Xia took the bottle and tossed it casually. It landed right in the trash can.
“Thanks, Senior. That bottle of water has gone home. You should head home early too.”
Everything had spiraled out of control. Su Tong was truly livid. He looked at Sheng Xia in a fit of rage and shouted, “Sheng Xia! Do you think just because I don’t lose my temper, you can treat people like they’re idiots?!”
Sheng Xia, who had been feeling somewhat speechless, suddenly burst into laughter upon hearing that.
She said slowly, “Hmm… how could you not be one?”
