- Chapter 2 - My Covenant with the Gods
“Drip… drop… drip… drop…”
The sound of dripping water gradually drifted into her ears.
Sheng Xia had originally been faking unconsciousness, but she had actually fallen asleep halfway through. At first, she thought her weakness stemmed from being locked in a basement for an entire day without food or water.
However, as she looked at the IV drip by her hand, everything before her eyes seemed to move in slow motion, and the sounds around her became incredibly clear. Sheng Xia finally confirmed that this body was indeed her own, though its fluctuating strength suggested she hadn’t yet fully adapted to this world.
This realization gave her a bit more confidence. Compared to the people of this world, her five senses and physical strength were at their peak; she definitely possessed the ability to protect herself.
Her gaze rested vacantly on the injection fluid. The policewoman who entered mistook her blank stare for psychological trauma and felt a surge of pity.
“You’re awake. Do you feel unwell anywhere else?” the policewoman stepped forward out of concern.
Sheng Xia shook her head and asked hesitantly, “How did you know I was being held there?”
Victims often exhibit reactive behaviors upon waking, so the officer was used to it. “At 3:18 PM today, someone sent an anonymous email explaining the situation. They erased their tracks afterward, so we don’t know who it was.”
It was likely that someone had discovered the crime but feared retaliation, so they reported it secretly.
Sheng Xia still had doubts; after all, the plot had changed the moment she arrived, leaving her somewhat passive. However, she didn’t show it. When the officer asked how she felt, she nodded to indicate she was mostly recovered and could cooperate with making a statement.
“Name.”
“Sheng Xia.”
“Age.”
“Seventeen.”
“Can you briefly describe what happened?” The male officer taking the statement had been part of the rescue team and had seen the scene in the basement. Noticing Sheng Xia’s pale complexion, his tone was very gentle.
Sheng Xia replied, “I had just finished work and was on my way home. Halfway there, I saw him fallen on the ground as if he’d tripped. I went over to help him, but I didn’t expect him to suddenly pull out a spray and use it. When I woke up, I was already tied up in the basement.”
“Perhaps he thought I couldn’t resist and wanted to enjoy watching me struggle, so he unlocked my handcuffs first.”
Recalling the pervert’s testimony, the officer asked, “He said you were the one who injured him with a wooden stick, correct?” Forensic analysis confirmed the stick had been snapped with great force, but the officer found it hard to believe this frail girl possessed such strength.
“I hit him, but… but…” As if reaching a terrifying memory, her body trembled. She lowered her head, breaking into a cold sweat. After a deep breath, she suppressed a sob: “I was so scared at the time. I don’t know how I grabbed the stick. By the time I reacted, he was already on the ground…”
The evidence in that room had already solidified the pervert’s prior crimes. The police didn’t suspect her at all. Seeing Sheng Xia’s pale and frightened appearance, they naturally didn’t press further.
Upon learning her parents were divorced and neglected her, leaving only an elderly grandmother in the countryside, their sympathy deepened. After a few more words of advice, they prepared to leave.
As soon as they left, Sheng Xia whipped the quilt aside and sat up to wipe away the sweat caused by the heat. To her surprise, she looked up to see the male officer standing there with a stunned expression.
Sheng Xia slowed her breathing, slowly rested her hand on the bed, and leaned sideways delicately. “Officer, is there something else?”
The male officer, who had only recently graduated, was momentarily choked up. “I… I just graduated.”
Sheng Xia simply blinked, looking at the somewhat aged-looking “recent graduate.”
Reading the unspoken words in her eyes, his young heart shattered. He grabbed the keys he had left behind and hurried out. Meanwhile, the few people in the livestream chat began spamming the screen.
[Good heavens, with the anchor’s acting skills, I wouldn’t believe it if you told me she didn’t win an Oscar in her past life.] If the viewers hadn’t seen her knock out two teeth with one swing of that stick, they would have been fooled too.
[This ‘Mary Sue’ halo isn’t just for show; it really is useful.] Technically, Sheng Xia’s story was a bit illogical. In a suspense movie, she’d definitely be a suspect.
Sheng Xia “liked” that comment and then packed her things to be discharged. During the statement, the police had returned her phone and other belongings. On the way out, she gained a general understanding of the original owner’s current situation.
To put it bluntly, she was destitute. Her house was empty, and she had only 100 yuan left in her bank account not even enough for rent.
Upon returning home, a quick glance gave Sheng Xia a preliminary judgment of the original owner’s personality: disciplined, goal-oriented, hardworking, and meticulous.
Everything was neatly arranged. The exam papers on the desk were categorized, and a “wish note” to get into A-University was pasted on her notebook of corrected mistakes.
The original owner had always excelled academically. After skipping grades, she took the college entrance exam last year, but her adoptive mother locked her in the house, causing her to miss it. Whenever she tried to return to school, the mother would cause a scene at the school or at the grandmother’s house.
She eventually pretended to comply, went out to work, and hid away. She was earning tuition while preparing for the next year’s exam a major “angst point” in the original plot.
Everything that happened afterward would derail her goal of going to university. Because she was targeted by the CEO, the original owner’s life was eventually ruined.
Sheng Xia carefully reviewed the plot. She really wanted to smash the heads of those men and pour some knowledge of the Penal Code into them.
In this illogical world of romance novels, the CEO could turn clouds into rain with a wave of his hand, the “Movie King” could have fans tear down her door in minutes, and the underworld boss could walk the streets with a gun doing whatever he pleased.
Opposing so many idiots with her strength alone would be difficult. The best way was to find the bugs in the system and finish the plot while ensuring her safety.
Otherwise, if she neutered the male lead today, her ancestral grave would be dug up tomorrow, and her head would be lined up for target practice by bullets.
“Have you guys read these CEO novels?” Sheng Xia rubbed her chin, wondering if the ghosts had any ideas.
Ugh, don’t even mention it. CEO novels were so popular the year I died. 36-pack abs, every single one defined. Slurp.
Lol, your CEO must be a corn stalk spirit.
Exactly! If a corn oil brand doesn’t have a CEO spokesperson, I won’t even look at it.
The chat chattered away with complaints. Sheng Xia found it funny and didn’t interrupt. Seeing the topic veer off, she formed a plan and leafed through the original owner’s textbooks.
Aside from knowing how to read, she had never seen any of this knowledge before.
Sheng Xia stared at a Chinese textbook for a long time, unable to snap out of it.
Finally, she decided to start with Chinese. Without a phone to use search engines, she could only figure things out based on the existing notes. Because many ghosts were from different eras, they found these things quite novel. They would occasionally ask questions and study along with her, while those who knew better stayed quiet and watched.
Seeing that no one questioned why she had to relearn everything instead acting like they were looking after her Sheng Xia smiled. She felt a growing fondness for these ghosts and was willing to answer their questions.
The light from the small desk lamp hit the side of Sheng Xia’s face. Her skin was supple, and her high ponytail exuded the scent of youth.
Some ghosts were struck by her elegant jawline. After a few casual questions, they gradually went silent to let her focus.
Some were even looking forward to seeing what score she could get. After all, they were “commoners” at heart and loved a good “face-slapping” underdog story. If she became the provincial top scorer and crushed the villains, it would be magnificent!
Just then, Sheng Xia picked up a math paper. Seeing her speed and calm expression, she looked exactly like a top student.
The ghosts began placing bets on her score. Most assumed she had the female lead script and bet on a high score, making the chat lively once again.
When Sheng Xia snapped back to reality, the chat was boisterous. She hesitated to speak, but seeing everyone clamoring for the results, she remained silent, picked up a red pen, and…
Marked a trail of red “X”s.
From the multiple-choice questions to the word problems, the ghosts began wailing like pigs as the grading finished.
No way, little sister!! How can you get a zero on a 150-point paper?!
Forgetting the complex problems was one thing, but she hadn’t even guessed a single multiple-choice question correctly. That’s some incredible luck.
It seemed she really did it all herself.
At that moment in the underworld, a ghost immediately closed the livestream, ran to Granny Meng, and asked for a bowl of soup. He cried, saying he would never follow the crowd in a livestream again.
He had seen that Sheng Xia got even the basic questions wrong and tried to bet against her being a scholar. However, his will wavered, and he ended up believing she was a secret genius, losing everything in the process.
After drinking the soup, he forgot everything. While wandering around with nothing to do, he found an interesting livestream and clicked in.
The host was a very beautiful girl doing an exam paper. Everyone was saying she couldn’t study, and he frowned.
This host looked exactly like a top student. How could she get a zero? To give her some confidence, he bet his last coat that she would score at least 100.
Though he didn’t know why he only had a coat left, it didn’t stop him from standing up for the little sister! He wanted to encourage her to study hard! He, of the Aisin Gioro line, would remain pure while the world was muddy; he would never join those lowlife ghosts!
Then, when the grading was finished, he ran back to Granny Meng crying, “Quick, give me a cup! I’m too sad! How can someone miss every single multiple-choice question in English?!! It’s a scam! A scam!!!”
Sob sob sob. They said the host had the female lead script. They’re just lying to ghosts.
He chugged the Mengpo soup and stood on the Bridge of Forgetfulness, sniffing.
Huh? Why is it so cold?
Without a single copper coin to his name, he huddled in a corner. Feeling bored, he looked around and clicked into a livestream.
Three seconds later.
Oh? The host is actually quite pretty!
She looks like she’d be really good at studying.
