- Chapter 10 - Meeting Again
Sheng Xia knew that arguing with someone like Su Tong would lead nowhere; if she stayed with him any longer, he might mistake her persistence for playing hard to get.
Just as she was about to take action, Grandma walked in from outside, beaming with joy. She usually enjoyed chatting with Sheng Xia, and today, being in particularly high spirits, she pulled Sheng Xia aside and talked for a long while.
Su Tong, being thin-skinned and unwilling to let others laugh at him, couldn’t find a gap to speak but didn’t want to leave either. He could only stand to the side, looking somewhat awkward.
The feeling of being ignored was unpleasant, but before this, whenever someone else was present, Sheng Xia would always stand aside and wait for Su Tong. There had never been an exception.
Realizing this, Su Tong felt no remorse. Instead, he wanted everything to return to “the right track.” His initial urge to turn and leave faded slightly, and he remained there holding the water, looking at Sheng Xia with a soulful expression.
Grandma noticed Su Tong. “Xiao Xia, is this your friend?”
Sheng Xia had no desire to answer, so Su Tong nodded directly. “Hello, I am Sheng Xia’s senior.”
Grandma was a bit hard of hearing. Upon hearing this, she asked again, “What? You said you came here to buy blood sausage? We don’t have any of that here.”
Su Tong frowned. “???”
“I said I am her senior from school, and I’m here because I have something to say.” Su Tong’s pride would not allow him to tell an outsider that he was there to apologize to Sheng Xia.
“You say your words are very pretentious? Young man, don’t talk about yourself like that. People… they need to be confident.” Grandma looked at Su Tong’s delicate features and waved her hand dismissively.
Sheng Xia, listening from the side, nearly died laughing. She suddenly realized that against “PUA literature,” the “hard of hearing literature” was a remarkably effective counter-move.
The expression on Su Tong’s face was speechless. He muttered “old bag,” only to be whacked once by Grandma’s umbrella.
He backed away in pain. “I thought you couldn’t hear??”
Grandma rolled her eyes. “I’m hard of hearing, not blind!”
Sheng Xia looked at Su Tong and said with a smile, “I forgot to tell you, when Grandma was young, she was a level ten lip-reader.”
“Then she was pretending not to hear!” Hearing this made Su Tong even angrier.
“Grandma only likes to listen to human speech.” The implication was that Su Tong wasn’t human.
Su Tong hadn’t expected Sheng Xia to say such a thing. His heart felt stifled. “Xiao Xia, you’ve really changed. How did you become like this? I’m so disappointed in you.”
Sheng Xia’s smile remained unchanged. “How have I changed? I’m just repeating the things you’ve done, Senior…”
She was simply using an excuse to commit what felt like banditry. Compared to Su Tong who previously knew the original host’s family situation was poor yet still took advantage to try and enslave her simply demanding the money back was already quite merciful.
Sheng Xia just wanted to live a peaceful life and didn’t want to stir up trouble. If Su Tong continued to pester her, it wouldn’t end this simply.
Su Tong met Sheng Xia’s gaze. Although she was smiling, he felt as if he were being stared at by a ferocious beast that would tear him to pieces in the next second.
When Su Tong reached the door, he looked back once more. The other person was smiling with an innocent, harmless look, as if the feeling from a moment ago had just been his imagination.
He glanced at the sun outside. Thinking of the money he had just given up, he felt unwilling to let it go and sought out Da Hu and Er Wen again.
The two of them were squatting in a corner eating “Green Tongue” popsicles. Hearing Su Tong’s words, the popsicles almost fell out of their mouths. “What did you say?”
“You want us to mug that girl again?”
Thinking of that rock-hard fist, the bridge of Da Hu’s nearly healed nose began to throb again.
The two men stood up, glanced at each other, and then walked away shoulder-to-shoulder in the opposite direction. They walked faster and faster until they were eventually sprinting to escape the alleyway.
Dammit, mug her again? He wants them dead!
This man was indeed harboring ill intentions!
“Xiao Xia, I came over because I wanted to tell you something. My granddaughter came over yesterday, but an old woman like me doesn’t really understand what young people like these days. I was wondering if you could come over when you’re free to make friends with her and keep her company?” Grandma was smiling and looked very approachable, making it hard for Sheng Xia to refuse.
Since she happened to like children, Sheng Xia agreed immediately. “Grandma, what is your granddaughter’s personality like?”
She was thinking about what kind of small gift to buy.
At the mention of this, a look of melancholy appeared on Grandma’s face. “She was hurt before, so her personality is a bit withdrawn now. She doesn’t have a single friend around her. I’m the only old woman she can say a few words to.”
But she was old; how many more years could she stay with her?
Sheng Xia’s personality had become much livelier recently. Grandma had been observing her for a long time and couldn’t help but want them to become friends.
Worried that Sheng Xia might be reluctant after hearing this, Grandma added, “My granddaughter is a beautiful child. Although she’s a bit shy, you’ll stop being afraid once you get to know each other.”
Sheng Xia waved her hand to show she didn’t mind. If nothing else, she was very familiar with looking after kids—what kind of child hadn’t she seen?
“Grandma, I don’t have much going on lately. I can come over tomorrow.”
Seeing Sheng Xia agree, Grandma was happy. She took her soy sauce and walked away slowly.
After returning home and seeing her granddaughter sitting quietly in the corner reading a book, Grandma’s gaze softened, but she couldn’t help nagging: “All you do is read all day. Careful you don’t turn into a bookworm!”
Lu Wanxing put the book on the side table and pushed her wheelchair over. “Old lady, you’re too talkative.”
“Now you’re complaining that I talk too much? Fortunately, I just found a companion for you. The girl is so pretty, her smile is like a little sun; it makes me happy just looking at her.” Grandma put her things aside. “When she comes, you aren’t allowed to refuse, do you hear me?”
“Old lady, I’m already twenty-five.” Lu Wanxing thought she had found a small child to keep her company and intended to refuse.
“Aren’t you still my granddaughter at twenty-five?” Grandma gave Lu Wanxing a mock-glare and went into the kitchen to cook.
“You just make sure to get along with her. Xiao Xia is very pure; you’ll definitely like her.”
Hearing that the person was coming tomorrow, Lu Wanxing thought for a moment and then sent a message to A-Biao, asking him to buy a gift.
The next day, Sheng Xia brought the small toy she had bought, mentally rehearsing the first thing she should say to Grandma’s granddaughter. Thinking that the girl’s personality was shy, she decided it would be best to go with the “kind older sister” approach.
Inside the room, Lu Wanxing also felt uneasy. This was the first time the old lady had set her up to meet a “child.” Although it was strange, she didn’t want the meeting to end on a bad note.
Both of them were mentally prepared. In their hands, they both held a Barbie doll as a meeting gift, having heard that little girls like to play with them.
Then, when Grandma opened the door, they both fell into silence.
Sheng Xia’s smile vanished instantly as if it had been ironed flat. Not a trace of mirth remained on her face as she looked at Lu Wanxing in the wheelchair, silently recalling what Grandma had said.
Shy. Little granddaughter.
Lu Wanxing looked at Sheng Xia’s expressionless face and narrowed her eyes.
Sunny. Young girl.
Simultaneously, they both hid the Barbie dolls behind their backs and stared at Grandma in unison, their eyes filled with a touch of disbelief.
Old lady/Grandma, are you serious about the “sunny/shy” girl??
