- Chapter 7 - The Ex-Girlfriend
The moment Shuyi’s message hit the group chat, the family notification feed exploded. Everyone was tagging her, demanding an explanation:
[Second Sister: Did your account get hacked?]
[Auntie: Married? Since when were you even dating?? @Shuyi]
[Cousin: Congratulations! So happy for you, Sister!] [Heart]
[Younger Aunt: @Shuyi, you certainly kept this under wraps. Bring her home for dinner tonight.]
[Second Aunt: The Bais are not some common small-town family, Shuyi. Marriage is a serious matter; you have to keep your eyes open.]
[Dad: Whose daughter is she? Does your mother know about this?]
Shuyi watched the messages scroll by, her fingers dancing unhurriedly across the screen as she typed:
[Shuyi: When she’s free, we’ll come over for dinner.]
No sooner had the message been sent than her second sister, Bai Zhixue, called. Zhixue spent several minutes teasing her, trying to pry for details on who exactly had managed to capture the “Ice Queen’s” heart.
“You’ll find out when the time comes, Sister,” Shuyi said, her voice calm and even.
“Still playing the mystery woman with me?” Zhixue laughed. “Fine. I’ve already got a meeting gift prepared.”
Shuyi smiled. “By the way,” Zhixue added, her tone shifting slightly, “did Liang Xiaona send you a wedding invitation?”
Shuyi recalled her secretary’s reminder. “I have no intention of going.”
After a long pause, Zhixue sighed. “Her personality is just like Liang Jun’s. Even at such a young age, she knows exactly what she wants and what she’s willing to discard to get it.”
Shuyi didn’t respond. Her sister had been Xiaona’s adoptive mother for ten years, so it was reasonable for her to attend, even if her divorce from Liang Jun had been a “burn-it-to-the-ground” affair. Xiaona’s ability to secure an alliance with the Su family was certainly a testament to her ruthlessness.
After hanging up, Shuyi immediately messaged Li Sui to ask when would be a good time for their families to meet.
“Boss,” Secretary Xiao Li said, entering the office with a wide grin. “Congratulations on the marriage certificate! When do we get the wedding candy?”
Shuyi touched the gold ring on her finger, still unused to the weight of it. “Arrange it as soon as possible. Also, go pick out a new jewelry set for me.”
“You got it!”
“One more thing,” Shuyi said, handing over her house keys. “Pack my things. I’ll be moving into Ningcheng Villa, Unit 808, starting tomorrow. I’ll be living there permanently.”
Xiao Li took the keys without a second’s delay. Once she left, Shuyi pulled up her phone. She was curious—what kind of comics did her new wife draw? Where could she buy them?
Li Mimi had heard that Li Sui had been back from her trip for two days. Knowing she had finished her deadline, Mimi wanted to drag her to the Antique City to look at some new arrivals for an upcoming auction.
But the moment they met at the restaurant, Li Sui dropped a bombshell.
“What?!” Mimi stared at her in disbelief, convinced Li Sui had suffered some kind of mental break from the breakup. “You had a flash marriage with a woman you’ve only met twice? You’re joking, right?” She reached out to feel Li Sui’s forehead, checking for a fever.
“I’m not joking,” Li Sui said, sipping her hot milk tea. She recounted the events of the last few days. “That’s the situation. I was the one who messed up that night… honestly, I’m the one getting the better end of the deal here.”
Mimi took a moment to process. “Sui-sui, you need to use your brain! Once you’re married, your assets become communal. If you divorce, she could walk away with half your wealth. You should at least marry someone you know inside and out!” She looked at her friend with a mix of pity and frustration. “I’m terrified you’re going to be eaten alive.”
Li Sui let out a self-deprecating laugh. “What wealth? I’m poor.”
Mimi: “…” Someone who makes tens of millions a year shouldn’t say such things without fearing a lightning strike.
“Her character is good,” Li Sui said, showing Mimi the photo in the marriage booklet. “Look, isn’t she beautiful?”
Mimi stared at Bai Shuyi’s photo for a long time. “Damn. Her visuals are top-tier. No wonder you let yourself be tricked into marriage. She’s ten thousand times better-looking than that cheating bastard.” Suddenly, Mimi frowned. “Wait, this name is familiar. And the face…”
“It should be,” Li Sui smiled. “Have you heard of Whale Law Firm? She’s a very famous lawyer. There are tons of interviews with her online.”
“I haven’t heard of her,” Mimi admitted. She knew about Li Sui’s history—how her mother had been a victim of domestic abuse and how people online had helped her. One person, a Go player, and several lawyers had offered guidance. It was the reason Li Sui had such a massive “filter” of respect for the legal profession.
“Are you still looking for ‘Checkmate,’ the person who helped you back then?” Mimi asked. “Any leads?”
Li Sui’s eyes dimmed as she shook her head. “No. Nothing.”
Ten years ago, when her stepfather, Sun Youwei, was abusing her mother, the police were useless. Li Sui had turned to the internet for help. A user named “Checkmate” (落子無悔) was the first to contact her, providing legal advice and the contact for a lawyer named Wang Xiao.
Lawyer Wang had taken the case, visited their home, and successfully sent Sun Youwei to prison for three years, allowing her mother to escape. Though her mother passed away shortly after, Li Sui had always wanted to thank “Checkmate.” But the user had deleted their account years ago without a word.
“Actually,” Mimi said, tapping her phone with a smirk, “I know a world-class hacker. I mentioned you were looking for someone, and I’ve pushed her contact to you. Her fees are high, though, so you’ll have to negotiate.”
“Money is no object,” Li Sui said, her gloom vanishing. “Mimi, you’re the best. I’ve moved, so you and Coco have to come over and help me celebrate.”
******
They spent the next few hours shopping. Mimi was gradually accepting the reality of the marriage. “So, will you have a wedding?” she asked, dropping snacks into the shopping cart.
“I think so,” Li Sui said. “But I need to ask her opinion. I’ll let you know when the date is set.”
“So, starting tomorrow, you’re living together?”
Li Sui pushed the cart slowly. “She said she’s moving in tomorrow.”
Mimi noticed the faint blush on Li Sui’s cheeks and couldn’t help but tease her. “So, what do we call this? In the novels I read, this is the classic ‘Wife flees after being cheated on, only to flash-marry a billionaire CEO/Powerhouse sister’ trope. Marriage first, love later, and a sweet revenge plot. Tsk, tsk.”
Li Sui cleared her throat, her face heating up. “You’ve read too many Yuri novels. Billionaire? Don’t be ridiculous.”
Mimi laughed. “Whatever you call it, congratulations. All the hardship is behind you. It’s all good luck from here on out.”
Li Sui nodded. “Yes. All good luck.”
After they checked out, Mimi went to the restroom while Li Sui waited outside. She was toggling between her work and private WeChat accounts when she sensed a presence beside her. She looked up, and her expression soured instantly.
Damn it. My luck isn’t that good after all.
Liang Xiaona stood there, wearing a smile that Li Sui hadn’t seen in days. “Sui-sui, it’s been a while.”
Xiaona had seen Li Sui standing alone in the parking lot earlier. She assumed Li Sui’s “breakup” was just a tantrum because she was getting married to someone else. In the two years they had been together, Xiaona had found Li Sui to be easy to handle and incredibly caring. People thought Xiaona was supporting Li Sui, but the reality was that Li Sui had never asked for a cent and constantly showered Xiaona with gifts.
Xiaona had managed to convince her fiancée, Su Tan, to go home early, and she’d come back to the mall on a whim to find Li Sui. And she had.
“Sui-sui,” Xiaona said, her voice dropping into that familiar, tender tone. “You shouldn’t have cut me off without giving me a chance to explain. I couldn’t get through to your phone. Did you blacklist me?”
“You really don’t have a clue, do you?” Li Sui said, her eyes cold and narrowed. “Don’t talk to me. Just looking at you makes me feel sick.”
“Are you still that angry?” Xiaona asked, sounding genuinely confused. “I know I messed up, but you’re only mad because I’m marrying someone else, right? Stop being angry, okay?”
Li Sui looked at her as if she were an idiot. “I don’t care who you marry. I hope you two stay locked together forever.”
Xiaona froze, taken aback by the bite in Li Sui’s voice. “Marrying her was my family’s idea. I told you I still have feelings for you. We can still be together, but marriage requires my family’s approval. Why can’t you be more understanding?”
Li Sui let out a cold snort. “Even you don’t believe that lie.”
Xiaona’s true motivation was her career. She had planned to join the Bai Group after graduation, but after her mother and Bai Zhixue divorced, those doors slammed shut. Her mother had tried to mend things with the Bais, but she had been met with nothing but cold shoulders. Marrying Su Tan was her only way up. The Su family was powerful; even if she couldn’t enter the Bai Group, she could use the Su family’s momentum to rise.
If only Li Sui’s family background had been better… she wouldn’t have minded marrying her.
“It doesn’t matter. It has nothing to do with me,” Li Sui said, turning to leave.
Liang Xiaona saw the genuine disgust in Li Sui’s eyes and felt a sudden, inexplicable surge of panic. “No, Sui-sui, believe me!” She reached out to grab Li Sui’s wrist, but her hand was caught in a vice-like grip.
“Liang Xiaona!”
Mimi had appeared at the perfect moment. She glared at Xiaona, then turned to comfort Li Sui. “What do you think you’re doing, you cheating piece of trash? Are you looking for a fight?”
“Li Mimi,” Xiaona hissed, her wrist aching. “Can’t you be a bit more civilized?”
“Civilized with someone like you?” Mimi warned, her voice icy. “Our Sui-sui dumped you. Harassing her now is just pathetic.”
A crowd was starting to gather. Mimi let go of Xiaona’s wrist, her expression full of contempt. “If the Su heiress found out you were a serial cheater who was still harrassing your ex after the breakup, do you think that wedding would still happen?”
“That’s none of your business,” Xiaona snapped, rubbing her wrist. She turned back to Li Sui. “Sui-sui, if you really don’t want me to marry someone else, I can promise you—”
“You’re dreaming!” Mimi barked. “Sui-sui is already married. Give it up. If you don’t get out of here right now, my fists aren’t going to be ‘civilized’ anymore.”
Xiaona froze. “Married? That’s impossible. How could you be married?”
Li Sui spared her one final, indifferent glance. “It’s none of your business. We broke up ages ago.”
“Exactly,” Mimi added, twisting the knife. “Unlike some people who cheat while they’re dating. You’re destined for a bad end. Come on, Sui-sui, let’s go.”
Xiaona wanted to chase after them, but the whispering crowd around her brought her back to her senses. She couldn’t risk a scene that would get back to Su Tan. She stood there, watching them disappear, her heart full of resentment and confusion.
Based on everything she knew about Li Sui, the girl was head-over-heels for her. Li Sui was definitely just saying she was married because she was angry.
Yes, Xiaona thought, calming her nerves. That has to be it.
