- Chapter 55 - Comrade Su Giving You the Cold Shoulder?
With a plan in mind, she hummed a cheerful tune and stepped out of her space.
For now, the priority was to distribute a batch of fruits and vegetables, this would solve the passengers’ hunger problem while clearing out the kitchen.
Otherwise, where would all that wheat be stored?
But as soon as she poked her head out, she spotted the man striding purposefully from the other end and immediately ducked back into her space, startled.
What was that man in such a hurry to do?
Forget it, forget it!
She’d already decided that even if she had to talk to a dog, she wouldn’t pay him any attention.
Why bother with him!
Unbeknownst to her, Huo Zhenhua had come straight to look for her after returning from outside.
When he didn’t find Su Meng in the third carriage, he searched through each carriage one by one.
The more he searched, the more agitated and worried he became.
Where had she gone?
Didn’t she like Xiao Qi?
Didn’t she enjoy sitting with that pretty-faced guy?
So why had she disappeared?
Remembering how they had once worked together to confront the Japanese, his heart tightened, and he clenched his fists until his knuckles cracked audibly.
What if she had also ended up on the Japanese blacklist?
With enemy spies lurking everywhere these days, what if she had been targeted?
Would she… be alright?
But the disaster relief couldn’t wait. With no time to continue searching for Su Meng, he turned back, frustrated and preoccupied.
Wang Qinglin watched the dark-faced regiment leader return alone and leaned in to whisper, “Did you offend someone again? Is Comrade Su ignoring you?”
“……” Huo Zhenhua was irritated but kept it to himself. He charged out into the rain. “Are we going or not?”
Wang Qinglin glanced back, nodded at Xie Mian, then pulled his hat down and vanished into the relentless downpour.
Meanwhile, Su Meng, disguised as an old man, headed in the opposite direction from Huo Zhenhua.
As she walked, she quietly left fruits, vegetables, sweet potatoes, and large bags of wheat grains, still in their husks, in the unmanned connecting areas between carriages.
Thus, over the next two days, the carriages near the dining car echoed with the continuous sound of pounding.
Everyone was using whatever tools they had to crush the wheat grains, making it easier to cook them into porridge to stave off hunger.
While everyone’s immediate hunger was temporarily resolved, the relentless rain showed no sign of stopping.
Su Meng sat by the window holding Xiao Qi, staring blankly at the curtain of rain. “How many more days do you think the train will be stuck here?”
Hearing this, Xie Mian frowned with worry. “I don’t know!”
Just then, Old Mr. Mo Hengyu hurriedly grabbed his medical kit and prepared to dash out into the rain.
Seeing this, Su Meng handed Xiao Qi to Wu Yanru and immediately rushed after him.
“Mr. Mo, what’s going on?”
Mo Hengyu pointed toward the train attendant waiting by the tracks. “Someone’s injured up ahead. I’m going to check on them.”
Su Meng quickly followed. “Why don’t I go instead? Sir, the rain is too heavy. You should head back.”
Seeing Mo Hengyu reminded her of her own grandfather, and she couldn’t bear to let the elderly man brave the storm.
Mo Hengyu smiled. “Then let’s go together.”
About ten minutes later, the old man and the young woman followed the train attendant to the accident site.
The injured person was half-carried, sitting on the railway tracks, while another person held a soaked piece of clothing over their heads.
But how could a single piece of clothing possibly shield them from the pouring rain?
The person holding the injured man saw the train attendant approaching with two people carrying medical kits. Wiping the rain from his face, he shouted, “Comrades, please come quickly and take a look!”
“Xiao Yu was washed off the tracks by the mountain torrent. We’re not sure where he’s injured, so we didn’t dare move him recklessly. We had to trouble you for help.”
Su Meng glanced at the pale, drenched Xiao Yu, then scanned the open wilderness devoid of any shelter. Without hesitation, she took off her raincoat and gave it to the injured soldier. She then checked his pulse. “He inhaled floodwater and has a minor lung infection. The main issues are malnutrition and exhaustion, which caused him to faint temporarily.”
Old Mr. Mo Hengyu confirmed her diagnosis. “It’s a pity the conditions here are so basic, we don’t have any nutrient solutions.”
Without a second thought, Su Meng opened her small wooden case. “I have some restorative pills.”
Due to Xie Mian’s health condition, they couldn’t prepare special nutritious meals for him on the train. So, she had specifically made some pills in her space to supplement nutrition and improve physical fitness. These pills were gentle, slightly more nutritious than rice broth, and wouldn’t overload someone severely malnourished.
Thus, Su Meng offered all the pills from her small wooden case. “Take one of these a day, it should restore half your energy. I hope this helps. Also, here’s some anti-inflammatory medicine. Mr. Mo, could you check if it’s suitable?”
Mo Hengyu looked at her with admiration. “Xiao Lin, you’ve done excellently! Your medical skills are impressive, and your character is beyond reproach.”
The soldier beside them took the pills and thanked her repeatedly. Under the current circumstances, even those working on the front lines couldn’t eat their fill. Feeling dizzy from hunger was a common occurrence. With the pills to replenish their strength, they believed they could clear the road sooner.
Su Meng thought the same. Her heart ached as she looked at the officers and soldiers steadfastly holding the front lines, and her admiration for them grew even stronger.
It was then, with that glance, that she spotted Huo Zhenhua among the crowd. His pant legs were rolled up to his knees, his army-green shirt tied around his waist, and he wore a fitted white undershirt as he worked alongside the soldiers. The bandage on his arm seemed to be the same strip of cloth she had torn from his cotton-padded jacket earlier. Rain washed over his wound, and the bandage was stained with a shocking patch of blood red. Looking closer, she noticed a faint trickle of blood-tinged water seeping from under the cloth, mingling with the rain and dripping into the muddy flow with his movements.
His wound must have reopened! And it might even be infected!
At this thought, Su Meng inexplicably said to the young soldier beside her, “Comrade, could you please call that comrade over? His wound is bleeding. If it’s not treated, it could get infected and fester, endangering his life.”
The young soldier followed her pointing finger and asked, “Is that Regimental Commander Huo? His wound is indeed infected. But he refuses to come down or change the bandage. Wait a moment, I’ll go get him.”
Su Meng frowned. What was he doing? He was practically risking his life!
Not long after, Su Meng sensed a familiar gaze. Turning around, she saw the man looking back at her. Rain streamed down his face, over his pale lips, and she saw his lips move a few times. Then, he rubbed his face vigorously with his hands and strode over.
His lips were pressed tightly together, his gaze fixed intently on her. Seeing her standing drenched in the rain, the furrow between his brows was so deep it seemed not even a strand of hair could fit in.
“Why are you here? Where’s your raincoat?” he asked urgently as soon as he approached.
Before Su Meng could respond, he untied the shirt from his waist and tried to drape it over her head. However, his shirt was also soaked, it dripped water as he lifted it.
Su Meng twitched the corner of her mouth and glanced at the equally exposed man. Pointing at his arm, she said, “Let me change your bandage first.”
Huo Zhenhua froze for a moment, instinctively pulling his arm behind his back. “No need!”
But Su Meng paid no heed and pulled his arm over, muttering to herself, “It’s probably infected. You’ll need an injection when we get back.”
The man initially wanted to resist, but the moment he felt the cool touch on his arm, his tense heart suddenly constricted, a bittersweet sensation washing over him.
He thought to himself, if she weren’t already betrothed, he would confess his feelings right then and there, propose on the spot.
Yet, fate was unkind, much like the unrelenting heavy rain that had been pouring for days, leaving the world in tatters.
His right hand, hanging at his side, longed to rise and cover her cool, small hand.
But seeing her focused expression and reminded of their respective circumstances, he forcefully suppressed the stirrings in his heart.
“Done! Come find me to change the dressing when we return.” Unaware of his inner turmoil, Su Meng casually prepared to discard the strip of cloth.
Huo Zhenhua reacted swiftly, snatching it back. “This is mine!”
Back when he was in the midst of battle, he knew Su Meng had torn her own undergarment to bandage his wound.
This was the first thing she had ever given him, he couldn’t bear to throw it away!
Su Meng looked at him in surprise. “Why keep that ragged cloth? What’s there to cherish?”
Huo Zhenhua avoided her gaze, urging in a low voice, “Hurry back. This will be over soon.”
With that, he rushed back to the front lines.
Su Meng: “……”
