- Chapter 51 - A Suspected Relative
Su Meng: “Go ahead!”
He poured out one pill, brought it close to smell it, his eyes lighting up, then leaned in to sniff it again.
The folds at the corners of his eyes radiated delight, brimming with joy.
He carefully placed the pill back into the bottle as if it were a treasure, gazing at it with reluctance. “Such a rare and excellent medicine! The main ingredients are all over a hundred years old. Did you gather them yourself from the deep mountains?”
Su Meng smiled without answering. Adhering to the principle of reciprocity, she picked up the bottle and handed it over. “Elder Mo, this is for you! Thank you for your medical instruments!”
Each bottle contained two pills.
If it weren’t for her spatial ability, it would have been nearly impossible to gather raw materials of such quality.
Elder Mo caressed the medicine bottle, pondered for a moment, then accepted it with a smile. “Thank you, young friend! I’ll indulge my greed just this once.”
The others looked at Elder Mo with envy.
Especially the man wearing black-framed glasses.
The envy and resentment in his eyes were so palpable that the man on the sickbed shot a sharp, vigilant glance his way.
The man with glasses was so frightened that his knees nearly buckled, almost making him kneel.
His hand instinctively flew to his neck.
Thank goodness! Thank goodness!
No blood was flowing.
His neck wasn’t broken.
The man on the bed indifferently withdrew his gaze, letting it drift over Su Meng.
He couldn’t understand why Lin Xi’s initial hostility and rejection toward him had been so blatant, yet in the blink of an eye, she had become gentle and protective.
But before he could figure it out, several silver needles were inserted, and his consciousness faded into darkness.
Su Meng was most skilled in traditional Chinese medicine and had never performed surgery for hemopneumothorax.
Smiling, she respectfully presented the scalpel to Mo Hengyu with both hands. “Elder Mo, I’ll trouble you with this!”
Mo Hengyu raised an eyebrow. Seeing how well-equipped Su Meng’s medical kit was, he had assumed she would perform the surgery herself. He chuckled and asked, “Are you trying to slack off?”
Su Meng shook her head and replied honestly, “I don’t dare!”
Although she knew the theoretical knowledge, she had never performed this type of surgery or even observed it in practice.
Therefore, she didn’t dare to overestimate her abilities, nor did she dare to operate on this person who might be a relative.
Mo Hengyu was momentarily taken aback but accepted the scalpel. Laughing heartily, he began the procedure while carefully explaining each step.
The carriage fell silent, filled only with Elder Mo’s voice and the deliberately suppressed breaths of the onlookers.
When it came to the final step of securing the instruments, Su Meng smoothly took over. “Elder Mo, you’ve worked hard! Let me handle this.”
Mo Hengyu nodded. “Young people should be like you, knowing what you know and admitting what you don’t. Xiao Lin, I suspect you deliberately let this old man show off, didn’t you?”
He didn’t believe that Su Meng could accurately diagnose the condition yet be unable to perform the surgery. He was certain she had done it to save his pride.
Su Meng smiled and said, “Book knowledge alone is never enough. After learning from your live demonstration, I won’t hesitate next time.”
Mo Hengyu chuckled and pointed at her playfully, then turned his attention back to her small wooden case.
“Modesty is a virtue in young people, but too much of it isn’t good. I see your surgical instruments are so complete and refined, you must be quite skilled yourself. As I said before, when you’re ready to settle down, come find me at the hospital.”
He still wanted to recruit Su Meng for Shanghai First Hospital.
Su Meng smiled modestly. “Thank you, Elder Mo!”
The male doctor with black-framed glasses nearby, upon hearing Mo Hengyu invite the unknown Su Meng to join Shanghai First Hospital, flashed a look of disdain and resentment in his eyes.
He stepped forward with a smile, sizing up Su Meng with a challenging glint in his eyes. “May I ask which medical school Dr. Lin graduated from and who your esteemed mentor was?”
Su Meng immediately grasped his intention. Unhurriedly tidying her belongings, she replied, “I possess only shallow knowledge, having self-studied a few basics. I’m afraid I’ll make a fool of myself in front of everyone.”
When she had studied medicine under her grandfather, she had indeed only learned traditional Chinese medical diagnosis and acupuncture. Before she could delve into surgery, the political situation had grown unstable.
Later, she intermittently studied Western medicine during her spare time over several years.
The thought of her grandfather, who had left without a trace for over a decade, weighed heavily on her heart.
Mo Hengyu, connecting her demeanor with the current circumstances, pieced together a rough understanding of her situation. He cut off the other man before he could speak, patting Su Meng’s shoulder with a sigh. “Everything will get better!”
This time, Su Meng did not leave with Mo Hengyu and the others. She stayed behind with a doctor surnamed Cheng to care for the patients.
Dr. Cheng wore a pair of silver-rimmed glasses, appearing refined and scholarly. Tall and slender, he carried an air of cool detachment when not smiling, but his smile was warm and approachable, like that of a friendly older brother.
“Dr. Lin, did you also just return from studying abroad?”
Surprised by the question, Su Meng instinctively touched her face and joked, “How did you know? Is it that obvious?”
Dr. Cheng’s thin lips curved into a smile as stunning as summer blossoms in full bloom.
He pointed to her small wooden case. “Some of your instruments aren’t available domestically. I happened to use similar ones while studying in Switzerland.”
So that was it!
Those instruments indeed weren’t available locally. She had crafted them bit by bit in her space, relying on memory.
She admitted candidly, “Yes! I had those made by artisans. As you know, such things can’t be brought back.”
Even if one could purchase advanced medical equipment abroad, customs would undoubtedly confiscate it.
Dr. Cheng nodded in agreement, his tone tinged with regret. “Absolutely! Once, my family tried to purchase a CT scanner in our name, but… it was seized.”
Hearing this, Su Meng gasped in shared frustration. “How unjust! If only it could have been imported, it would have filled a critical gap in domestic medicine.”
With similar experiences and shared interests, the two quickly became engrossed in conversation.
They chatted animatedly about everything, from the regret over the CT scanner to the conditions of the patients in the carriage, and even their respective areas of expertise.
Wu Yanru had initially joined them with enthusiasm, but as the topics grew increasingly unfamiliar and complex, she eventually lost interest and dozed off nearby.
When Huo Zhenhua entered the carriage, he saw Su Meng and a male colleague huddled together in the connecting area, chatting intimately in the quiet space.
He cleared his throat lightly. When no one noticed, his brows furrowed with irritation.
Why didn’t this young woman understand the importance of maintaining a proper distance from male colleagues?
Watching her smiling face, he felt an inexplicable restlessness.
Remembering their awkward first encounter and how she had acted as if nothing happened afterward, his heart tightened.
She clearly hadn’t taken it seriously at all!
No wonder she had so easily declared, “We’re even.”
Shifting his gaze, he scanned the patient lying on the bed and noticed the man’s fingers twitch slightly. He strode over.
“Don’t move!”
He had just reached out to tuck in the corner of the quilt when he heard Su Meng’s voice.
Hah!
So, this woman hadn’t failed to notice him, she had simply ignored him.
Huo Zhenhua inwardly grumbled, completely forgetting that Su Meng was currently dressed in men’s clothing and naturally wouldn’t approach him.
He turned to look at the woman and man walking toward him, one in front and the other behind, and asked expressionlessly, “How is he doing?”
Su Meng replied, “The surgery was very successful! With proper rest and care, he should be fully recovered in about three to four months.”
Then, unable to hold back, she added, “How did he get so severely injured? His ribs came dangerously close to piercing his heart.”
Huo Zhenhua stiffened, his fingers curling tightly, his magnetic voice growing even deeper. “He was hit by falling rocks while trying to save me.”
In truth, it was due to a second landslide.
In the critical moment, he had only managed to push the bystanders out of the way but couldn’t dodge in time himself.
Just as he thought he would die on the spot, Xie Mian forcefully shoved him away.
“His name is Xie Mian, and he’s from our Southeast Military District. Thank you both!”
Su Meng’s heart jolted, the name “Xie Mian” echoing in her mind.
She remembered, her father, Su Mianzhi, had the courtesy name Mianzhi.
And her maternal grandfather’s surname was Xie.
Could he be her father?
