- Chapter 50 - I Said, I Didn’t. I Didn’t!
“You really have a carefree heart! Sleeping so soundly all by yourself.”
Huo Zhenhua chuckled as he closed the window. Just as he was about to turn around, he suddenly remembered Su Meng’s small wooden box, and a doubt arose in his mind.
Throughout their journey, she had only carried a large backpack.
Her large backpack was spacious enough to fit a sniper rifle, but why hadn’t he seen the outline of that small wooden box?
He glanced at the sleeping girl, his gaze sweeping toward the large backpack placed inside.
Just as he was about to lean in closer, the partition door was pushed open.
Startled, he immediately straightened up and turned unnaturally to face the window.
Wang Qinglin let out a surprised “Huh?” and glanced back and forth between him and Su Meng’s bed twice before exclaiming in astonishment, “Regiment…”
Huo Zhenhua abruptly turned around, strode over to him, and without another word, pushed him out.
Wang Qinglin looked at him seriously. “Regiment Commander?”
Huo Zhenhua cleared his throat lightly, his expression calm and serious as he asked, “Why did you come back? Did you finish the sweet soup?”
Wang Qinglin couldn’t shake the feeling that his regiment commander was acting strangely.
He eyed him suspiciously and said with certainty, “You’re feeling guilty. Regiment Commander, you weren’t just about to kiss…”
Before he could finish his sentence, his mouth was covered.
Huo Zhenhua scanned the corridor to make sure no one was around before releasing his hand, his gaze sharp and cold. “That mouth of yours is going to get you into trouble sooner or later. Are you trying to get us all killed?”
Wang Qinglin had been Huo Zhenhua’s partner since they enlisted and knew him better than he knew himself. Seeing the flicker in his eyes, he suddenly understood.
“Neither of you is married. Developing a normal boyfriend-girlfriend relationship isn’t against the rules or the law. Why are you so flustered?”
Huo Zhenhua’s brows furrowed, his entire body tensing up. He pointed a finger at Wang Qinglin and gritted his teeth. “Our discipline is to not spread rumors or fabricate lies. Are you itching for some training? I said, I didn’t. I didn’t!”
Wang Qinglin wasn’t afraid to spar with him one-on-one, but he dreaded being put through training drills.
He immediately backed down, raising his hands in surrender. “Alright! I know you didn’t. I misunderstood. My eyes must be failing me.”
Huo Zhenhua curled his lips into a slight smile and slung an arm over Wang Qinglin’s shoulder in a brotherly manner, forcefully turning him around. “Our mission isn’t finished yet. Let’s go!”
Wang Qinglin was taken aback and shook off his hand, deliberately saying, “I’m going back to rest. You just approved it, saying I’m injured and lacking energy, so I should come back and rest. I’m not going!”
Huo Zhenhua acted as if he hadn’t heard, tightening his grip.
With his other hand, he pulled a small bottle from his pants pocket. “Here, there’s one more hemostatic pill left. Consider yourself lucky.”
Wang Qinglin pointed at the bandage on his head and retorted, “Do you think I need a hemostatic pill?”
Huo Zhenhua glanced at the nearly dried bloodstain on the bandage, feeling not the slightest bit of guilt.
He snatched the hemostatic pill back, carefully tucked it into the medicine bottle as if it were a treasure, and walked off.
He tossed back only one sentence: “They say this pill also has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.”
Wang Qinglin: “…”
So, he was the one being ungrateful!
The bleeding on his head had stopped, but the pain was still there.
Annoyed, he hurried to catch up.
On the other side, Su Meng stared blankly at the tightly closed partition door, her heart once again stirred with turmoil.
In truth, she had sensed Huo Zhenhua’s approach.
Just as she was preparing to strike with a silver needle between her fingertips, she hadn’t expected Wang Qinglin to arrive so coincidentally.
So, he had always been suspicious of her.
He had never let go of his hostility toward her.
Even if she was under his watchful eye all day, he still couldn’t rest without checking her backpack.
But she asked herself, what rule-breaking had she actually done?
The only two times she had killed were when they fought side by side against the Japs.
Her clumsy marksmanship had taken down far fewer enemies than he had, not even a fraction. What right did he have to suspect her of this and that?
That damn man!
Couldn’t stand to see others doing well, could he?
If not for the soundproofing of the compartment door, Su Meng might have heard the man she called “that damn man” firmly denying any feelings for her “I don’t, I don’t!”
If Su Meng had known, she would have just scoffed.
She felt that she and Huo Zhenhua were fundamentally incompatible, their energies clashing.
Once they got off the train, they would go their separate ways, each walking their own path.
By then, Ada should have recovered a bit.
Perhaps she could soon go pick up her father.
Rubbing her growling stomach, she was about to lock the door and enter her space when the broadcast sounded again.
“Attention, passengers. Any comrades with medical supplies such as catgut sutures, please proceed quickly to Carriage Three.”
The announcement repeated three times.
Su Meng nibbled on a cucumber, picked up her small wooden case, and headed out.
Suddenly remembering her “Lin Xi” identity, she changed her disguise before cautiously stepping out.
Carriage Three was near the collapsed area, where the injured were resting.
The previously treated casualties had been moved to the side.
On the temporary bed in the center lay a man with a sunken chest, covered in blood.
His hands dug fiercely into the edges of the bed, the muscles on his inner forearms bulging high and hard, veins stretched pale.
His bloodless lips trembled, teeth clenched tight, a trickle of blood sliding from the corner of his mouth.
Sweat beads as large as peas rolled into his eyes, yet he stubbornly refused to blink, quietly listening to the doctor analyze his condition.
“Lin Xi, you’re here.” Old Mr. Mo Hengyu noticed Su Meng approaching, stopped talking, and stepped aside.
He said, “Please diagnose him.”
Su Meng nodded. “Alright!”
As she drew closer, she got a clear look at the man.
Shocked, her half-extended hand froze mid-air. Her eyes swept over his face again and again before she frowned and spoke, “Why is it you?”
Then, the image of the little girl flashed before her eyes.
She should have realized this man was likely on this train but she never expected to meet him under such circumstances.
Were they bound by fate or just cursed?
Hearing her exclamation, the man’s sharp gaze shot over. Seeing an unfamiliar face, he looked puzzled.
Mo Hengyu leaned in. “You know each other?”
Su Meng hesitated, then nodded. “I suppose you could say we’ve met.”
Including this time, they had coincidentally crossed paths three times in less than half a month.
She didn’t want to treat him, but thinking of the little girl’s soft, pleading eyes, her hand moved almost on its own, resting on his wrist.
“He has two broken ribs, accompanied by hemopneumothorax.”
After she spoke, Mo Hengyu raised an eyebrow at the others behind him. “I told you Lin Xi’s medical skills are no less than ours.”
Someone forced a dry laugh and stepped forward. “Dr. Lin is young and capable. But I wonder if you have all the necessary surgical instruments and medicines? If not, we can pool our resources.”
Just as Su Meng was about to speak, she caught a glimpse of a blue teardrop-shaped corner peeking out from the man’s bare shoulder blade.
Subtly adjusting his shoulder, she froze as if struck by lightning, stunned on the spot.
She remembered her family’s ancestral teachings mentioned that the men of the Su family had blue teardrop-shaped birthmarks on their shoulder blades, while the women had red ones.
If that was the case, could this man be a member of her Su family?
He might be her relative!
Her eyes flickered as she reached for the small wooden box, transferring the finest medicinal herbs she had prepared earlier in her space, the ones needed for this surgery, into it.
Then, she directly opened her small wooden box and said, “I have the required medicinal herbs, but I lack the fixation instruments. Could the seniors please pool together what you have? Thank you!”
For someone from her Su family, only the best medicinal herbs would do.
As for fixation instruments, she had no foresight and hadn’t prepared in that direction, so she had none at all!
Mo Hengyu generously waved his hand, “I happen to have some.”
Su Meng had already known he did, and so did the other doctor with black-framed glasses.
But only Mo Hengyu offered them without hesitation, while the others remained silent and hung back.
Su Meng didn’t mind and proceeded to take out the necessary medicines one by one.
Mo Hengyu casually picked up a bottle labeled “Painkiller” and asked, “May I take a look?”
