- Chapter 49 - Touched
The train attendant made a round and returned with a pained expression. “Sorry, comrade! No one has extra gauze.”
“Is that so?”
Just as Su Meng was about to make an excuse to fetch gauze, she saw him take off his coat and swiftly tear off a large portion of his inner white coat, handing it over with a sincere smile. “Comrade, will this do?”
Su Meng was taken aback for a moment, then accepted it with both hands, looking at him with admiration. “Yes! Thank you!”
The train attendant had no relation to any of the injured, yet in such a time of scarce resources, he did not hesitate to contribute his own clothing.
Truly commendable!
She was deeply moved.
Recalling the journey to Yangcheng, which had been fraught with danger, she had worried about the nation, battered and bruised.
On the way back to Shanghai, although there were still risks, what moved her more was the compassion she witnessed.
Inside the carriage, doctors who didn’t know each other exchanged medical supplies without reservation.
The train attendant, besides dutifully maintaining order, constantly sought ways to ease everyone’s concerns.
When Su Meng received the other half of the attendant’s torn coat, she wanted to say thank you but ultimately refrained from saying more.
Outside the carriage, in the pouring rain, countless soldiers and civilians worked together to clear the landslide, move fallen rocks, and shovel away the mud.
Everyone was striving to rebuild their homeland, and it seemed this home was not so disappointing after all.
Inspired, Su Meng worked in one go, racing against time to complete three minor surgeries before collapsing to the ground, utterly exhausted.
“Dr. Lin, I see Commander Huo!”
Wu Yanru, having finished assisting with the injured, exclaimed by the window.
Su Meng looked amusedly at the girl so dedicated to pursuing love and asked, puzzled, “Do you really like your Commander Huo that much?”
She had never been in love and couldn’t understand how some people could treat love as sustenance or life itself.
But seeing Wu Yanru ardently chasing after what seemed like a cold presence, she shook her head and sighed: If love meant chasing, she’d rather not have it.
What she wanted was a mutual, shared affection.
Wu Yanru played with her long braid, raising a charming smile. “Of course! Who wouldn’t like such an outstanding man? Don’t you?”
Su Meng’s face darkened. “…Just because you like him, must I like him too? Is that appropriate?”
Wu Yanru was taken aback, stared at Su Meng for a long moment, then burst into laughter, bending over with mirth. “Hahaha! I forgot you’re a man!”
Her bell-like laughter was infectious; even some of the less severely injured patients couldn’t help but chuckle, though it made them wince in pain.
Su Meng: “…”
She had also forgotten she was a “man.” For a moment, she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
“Wow! He can move a huge rock all by himself, it must weigh three or four hundred pounds!” Wu Yanru chattered excitedly by the window. “Look at the muscles on his arms, bulging and bigger than my entire arm…”
By then, all the injured had been treated, so no one scolded her.
Su Meng also wanted to see the bustling scene she described.
Carrying her small wooden case, she looked through the glass window at the drenched but energetic people working in the rain.
Among them were the old and the young, soldiers and civilians, and even those with minor injuries who refused to leave the front lines, like Wang Qinglin.
“Achoo!”
Someone sneezed, and Su Meng immediately thought of the eight large woven bags of old ginger she had harvested in her space. She turned and walked toward the train attendant.
“Comrade, which way is the dining car?”
“Go straight this way, it’s the sixth carriage.”
“Thank you!”
When she reached the empty carriage in the middle, Su Meng took advantage of the lack of people and slipped into the nearby restroom.
When she emerged, she had transformed into a hunched, elderly woman.
She struggled to carry a large bag of old ginger.
If one sniffed carefully, there was a faint sweet scent coming from the opening of the woven bag.
Upon reaching the dining car, she had just set the bag down when a small child latched onto her leg.
“I recognize you.”
Su Meng looked down and met the little girl’s round, grape-like eyes, black with a hint of purple, exceptionally beautiful.
Just as stunning as she remembered!
“It’s you, little girl!”
Surprised, she patted the girl’s head and winked at her.
Then, turning to the wary dining car staff, she smiled and said, “This bag is full of old ginger, and there’s also a large pack of brown sugar. A kind-hearted person asked me to deliver it.”
Hearing this, a chef wearing a white hat stepped forward.
“Our old ginger and brown sugar were indeed running low. Thank you, comrade! Please tell us who the kind-hearted person is so we can send a letter of gratitude later.”
Su Meng pretended to think for a moment, then shook her head. “The light was too dim, I couldn’t see clearly. I only know he was tall, thin, and had an imposing presence, a truly noble person.”
The chef and several train attendants exchanged glances and cautiously surrounded her.
There had just been a murder on the train, and someone coincidentally delivering old ginger and brown sugar, could the contents be problematic?
With one glance, Su Meng understood their concerns and quickly untied the bag. “Don’t worry! It really is just old ginger and brown sugar. I’ve worked with crops my whole life, I wouldn’t mistake them.”
But her words still didn’t fully ease their suspicions.
The train attendants stood guard around Su Meng, ready for anything.
The chef picked up a piece of ginger, examined it, and sniffed it.
He also carefully inspected the brown sugar before finally breaking into a smile.
“Thank you, comrade!” The chef quickly retrieved a hard-boiled egg from behind the counter. “It’s not much, but please don’t refuse it, ma’am.”
Eggs were a precious and nutritious commodity, how could Su Meng possibly refuse?
She beamed, accepting it with both hands. “I won’t refuse, I won’t! Thank you!”
As soon as she finished speaking, she felt a tug on her pant leg.
The little girl stared at her eagerly. “You…”
Su Meng smiled, looking down, and interrupted her. “Here, for you! Where is your father?”
This was the same little girl whose fingers she had stepped on during her previous train ride to Guangzhou.
Back in Luo Village, she had knocked out the girl’s father and handed him over to the armed forces.
Why was the little girl here alone?
Had her father been released?
Clearly, the little girl couldn’t provide any answers.
She obediently ate the egg Su Meng fed her, and when she smiled, the dimple on her left cheek resembled Su Meng’s own, like a funnel on a wine jug.
So lovely! So, captivating!
Before she knew it, Su Meng had fed her the entire egg.
“Yummy!”
Hearing this, Su Meng’s heart jolted, and she snapped back to reality.
Why had she fed her so naturally?
She stared in disbelief at the remaining eggshell in her hand, an indescribable feeling stirring in her chest.
She thought, perhaps it was guilt.
Back when he had her father beaten and sent to the Armed Forces Department, he never considered how a little girl like her would manage on her own.
Now, not only did he feel guilty, but recalling his own days of drifting alone in the world, he even felt a certain kinship with her.
“I… I should go now!”
Su Meng noticed that the little girl’s gaze held a strange power. She didn’t dare meet her eyes, afraid that if she looked any longer, she might soften and take the girl with her.
“Mm.” Surprisingly, the little girl didn’t cry or make a fuss. Instead, she waved at Su Meng like a miniature adult.
Hearing this, not only did Su Meng breathe a sigh of relief, but the train attendant nearby did too.
This little girl had been personally entrusted to their care by the train conductor, with strict instructions to look after her well.
They were most afraid of the girl throwing a tantrum.
Fortunately, the little girl had been very well-behaved all along.
Watching Su Meng walk out of the dining car without looking back, the girl sniffled and called out in a muffled voice, “Don’t go too far. I’ll have my dad come find you later.”
Su Meng smiled and waved back, “Alright… then!”
They really were fated, weren’t they?
The world was so vast, yet they had managed to cross paths on two different trains, going round and round.
By the time she returned to her sleeper car, Huo Zhenhua and the other two still hadn’t come back.
Su Meng figured there was nothing left for her to do, so she relaxed and drifted off to sleep.
Little did she know that Huo Zhenhua, not seeing her there, would actually come looking for her in the sleeper car.
