- Chapter 47 - I’m My Father’s Daughter, I Can’t Back Down!
“Su Meng, it’s terrifying! Su Meng…”
With a loud slam, she shut the door, covered her mouth, and slid down to the floor, leaning against it.
She retched violently, her body convulsing as if her heart and lungs were being torn apart.
Without a second thought, Su Meng rushed over and held her up. “What’s wrong? Don’t panic! Tell me slowly.”
“A dead person… a pool of white… and red…”
Trembling, she clutched Su Meng’s hand, retching as she spoke until the whites of her eyes turned bloodshot.
“Don’t go out there, it’s too, too horrible!”
Perhaps comforted by the presence of someone familiar, she gradually stopped shaking and her fear subsided. Her words became clearer and more coherent.
“I just stepped out and saw someone attacking people in the back carriage. A flash of cold steel, and then… I saw that horrifying scene. Su Meng, I’m scared! Let’s not go out, okay?”
She tugged at Su Meng’s sleeve, her eyes pleading like a frightened little rabbit.
Seeing that she had calmed down, Su Meng helped her to her feet and reassured her, “Don’t be afraid! There must be train police and officers outside. We won’t go anywhere, I promise.”
Wu Yanru finally settled down.
Hugging her knees with her chin resting on them, she sat dazed for a while before whispering, “It’s the first time I’ve seen a dead person. I’m sorry, did I scare you?”
Su Meng replied, “It’s alright. Anyone would be frightened…”
Before she could finish, the broadcast sounded again.
Both fell silent.
Once the broadcast ended, Wu Yanru rolled off the bed, swiftly put on her shoes, and declared, “I’m studying nursing. I’m going to help.”
Su Meng: “…”
Didn’t you just say you weren’t going?
Wu Yanru opened the door, glanced back, and said, “After all, I’m my father’s daughter, I can’t back down!”
Su Meng curled her lips slightly, clenched her right fist, and pumped it encouragingly. “Believe in yourself, you can do it!”
But inwardly, she grumbled: Who doesn’t have an impressive elder in their family?
I’m Grandmaster Ming’s granddaughter. He always said, “A healer must have compassion and cannot stand by when lives are at stake.” I can’t ignore people in need!
A faint smile touched her lips as she locked the door, slipped into her hidden space, and transformed once again into a middle-aged man with a mole at the corner of his mouth, a mole that perfectly concealed the dimple on her left cheek.
Carrying her grandfather’s old medical kit, she strode resolutely outside.
Although her grandfather had specifically warned her before he left not to reveal her connection to Grandmaster Ming or to flaunt her medical skills, she had loved medicine since childhood and never stopped learning.
Lately, she had been devouring medical texts in her hidden space, absorbing knowledge like a sponge.
Now, she refused to hide in a self-imposed cage out of fear that someone might discover her secret.
If conditions allowed, she wanted to follow her heart and live freely.
The injured had been gathered in carriage number 19.
As Su Meng approached, she saw Wu Yanru, pale and sweating, moving determinedly among the wounded, doing whatever she could to help.
“It’s bad! This patient is hemorrhaging badly, we need to stop the bleeding and get a blood bag!” Wu Yanru called out while bandaging another, alert to the crisis nearby.
But the only two doctors on site were busy treating more critical cases.
One doctor glanced over quickly and shouted, “Hurry, call for backup!”
Su Meng stepped forward. “I’m a doctor. Let me handle it.”
The train attendant spun around, exclaiming excitedly, “That’s wonderful! Thank you for helping!”
The patient with severe bleeding had a minor rupture in the wall of the radial artery caused by a blade injury, far less critical than Wu Yanru had made it sound.
With a few silver needles, Su Meng stopped the bleeding.
Then, she applied medicine and bandaged the wound seamlessly.
By the time Wu Yanru looked over, Su Meng was already standing up with her medical kit.
Pointing at Su Meng in astonishment, then at the still-unconscious man, Wu Yanru asked incredulously, “You’ve finished treating him? Then why hasn’t he woken up yet?”
The train attendant also approached to check, leaning in to feel the patient’s breath as she asked, “Comrade, is he out of danger now?”
By then, Su Meng had already crouched down beside the second injured person, tending to the wound while replying, “As long as there’s no infection, his life isn’t in danger.
As for the unconsciousness, don’t worry! He’ll wake up soon.”
He was merely a man who had fainted from fright.
As she spoke, her hands moved swiftly to complete the bandaging.
Thanks to Su Meng’s assistance, the five or six injured individuals were treated promptly, leaving only the two doctors laboring over the more serious cases.
Su Meng glanced over and prepared to leave.
The train attendant, her face etched with worry, asked straightforwardly, “Comrade, could you possibly wait a little longer?”
Su Meng thought it over, there was nothing urgent waiting for her and nodded, “Alright.”
Relieved, the attendant expressed her gratitude sincerely, “Thank you! Please leave your name and workplace. We’ll send a letter of appreciation for your kindness.”
Su Meng smiled and shook her head, “A doctor’s heart is compassionate. This is what I ought to do, no thanks necessary!”
She had disguised herself to practice medicine quietly, wanting only to do what she loved without drawing attention.
Yet her words caught the attention of the two doctors absorbed in their work.
The older one, with graying temples, looked at her with admiration and said, “Well said! That’s the spirit we doctors should embody. Young man, judging by your skillful technique and calm demeanor, you must have been trained by a master.”
Su Meng’s lips curved into a smile, about to respond modestly, when the elderly gentleman beckoned her over, “Come here!”
Puzzled, Su Meng approached, “Sir?”
The old man struggled to straighten his back, swaying slightly as he wiped sweat from his brow, saying weakly, “I’m getting old! My vision is blurry, and my strength is failing. Young man, I must ask, can you take over my task? Don’t be afraid! I’ll assist you from the side.”
Su Meng quickly assessed the situation and understood.
Though not a graduate of a specialized program, her over ten years of medical experience gave her full confidence in handling a procedure of this level.
Besides, the old doctor had already tackled the most challenging part.
“I can do it!”
After swiftly sterilizing herself, she picked up the scalpel and began operating skillfully under the old man’s watchful eye.
During her studies abroad, she had often disguised herself to offer free medical services in slums, accumulating plenty of hands-on experience.
But she had never worked under the scrutiny of fellow practitioners.
At first, she was cautious and meticulous.
Gradually, she immersed herself in the task, completely forgetting anyone else was there.
Watching her, the old man was so astonished that any advice he might have offered stuck in his throat like a large bone, leaving him speechless.
He was utterly stunned!
She couldn’t be more than seventeen or eighteen, could she?
How could she be so proficient and composed?
She even surpassed his decades-old senior apprentices in brilliance.
The old gentleman remained silent until Su Meng finished tying the bandage, then he let out a hearty laugh: “Young man, you’re quite skilled! You look like a seasoned ‘veteran’ who’s been through many battles. May I ask where you work?”
Su Meng always cherished the sense of accomplishment after practicing medicine, and hearing the old gentleman’s praise made her heart swell with pride.
“Thank you for the compliment, sir! I’m currently traveling for studies and don’t have a fixed workplace yet.”
Upon hearing this, the old gentleman let out an “Oh,” scrutinized her for a moment, and then said, “I am the director of Shanghai First Hospital. My surname is Mo, Mo Hengyu. If you ever want to work, you can come to me anytime.”
“Is Mo Xiaoli your granddaughter?” Su Meng’s mind flashed with insight, and the words slipped out.
In the book, Mo Xiaoli had tried to stop Zhong Wanrou and Nie Ronghua from getting together, only to be driven away to Hong Kong by Zhong Wanrou in the end.
And…
