- After Awakening, She Tore Apart Her Enemies and Joined the Army on an Island
- Chapter 4 - A Delightful Day at the Police Station
She looked resentfully at the man and woman standing side by side, feeling a surge of timidity, and decided to play the family card.
“Su Meng, for the past ten years, I’ve always treated you as my own daughter. I’ve never raised my voice at you or laid a finger on you. This time, it was my fault, I overstepped and tried to discipline you. But you were too harsh on me. Look at my face, swollen like a steamed bun. Child, I feel pain too.”
With tears streaming down her face, she skillfully avoided the main issue, her calm tone laced with accusations in every word, subtly implying that Su Meng was rebellious and unfilial.
With each sentence she spoke, the Su family’s disdain and dissatisfaction toward Su Meng grew.
Second Grandma stood at the door, her cane thumping loudly against the floor, fueling the fire with vigor. “Oh my! This is outrageous! Cuilin, you’re too weak! A white-eyed wolf like her deserves a good beating. If one round isn’t enough, give her another. Sooner or later, she’ll be tamed.”
Her greedy eyes swept across everything in the room: the rosewood bed, the soft silk quilt, the leather sofa, the jewelry boxes stacked on the dressing table, and the expensive ornaments scattered everywhere. All of these belonged to the Su family. Why should only the eldest branch enjoy them? Why should they all belong to this little wretch? A mere girl like her didn’t deserve any of it.
Life had bent Second Grandma’s spine, forcing her to grovel and play pitiful before Shen Wuyang and Zhong Cuilin, hoping for more scraps from their hands. But deep down, she was resentful. As an elder of the Su family, she believed she deserved to enjoy everything the family had. Unable to challenge the adults, she directed her hatred toward the weak and young Su Meng. Since ancient times, stepmothers and stepchildren had often been at odds, and she relished the sight of them tearing each other apart.
Su Meng glanced at the aged face, unimpressed, and shook the syringe in her hand. Placing one hand on her hip and lifting her chin, she sneered, “Hah! Who dares?” With that, she shoved past Second Grandma’s family blocking her way and turned to head downstairs.
Second Grandma staggered from the impact, stumbling and howling in anger, “This beast actually dared to push me? Oh! I’m in pain, I’m injured, I can’t move! Mianzhi, you must compensate me, or I won’t let this go!”
Shen Wuyang had long grown tired of the second branch’s parasitic behavior. Hearing Second Grandma’s blatant extortion once again, he shot her a displeased glare and said coldly, “Second Aunt, know your limits.”
Second Uncle Su, surprised by the usually amiable man’s harsh tone, immediately darkened his face. “Mianzhi, she’s your second aunt. Watch your tone!”
Shen Wuyang snorted coldly, brushed past Second Uncle Su, and strode out of the room, leaving behind a command: “Everyone, go downstairs!”
Huo Zhenhua hadn’t expected that his well-intentioned act of delivering something would lead to him being ensnared in a scheme. Frustrated, he fiddled with a silver lighter, his icy gaze sweeping over Zhong Cuilin and Zhong Wanrou, uncertain which of them had plotted against him. He wanted to leave immediately, but when he saw the girl holding a disconnected phone receiver, standing off against Shen Wuyang like a fighting rooster, he paused.
Huo Zhenhua knew all too well that if it weren’t for Su Meng’s timely acupuncture, he might have made a grave mistake or even ended up disabled. He couldn’t stand by and watch her fall into trouble without lifting a finger.
“Have you called the police?” he asked.
Su Meng turned around in surprise and nodded. “Yes, I have.”
“Reported? How could that be?” Shen Wuyang couldn’t believe it, slamming the phone receiver in front of Su Meng.
Pointing at Su Meng, he yelled, “How can you be so unreasonable? What’s wrong with your mother saying a few words to you? Do you even know the trouble you’ve caused? If the Su family falls, don’t think you’ll get off easy either.”
In the current situation, everyone was looking out for themselves, wishing they could keep their heads down and avoid trouble.
Especially families like the Su’s, who were capitalists, they would have given anything to vanish into thin air the next second.
The so-called “cutting off the capitalist tail” not only meant confiscating all family assets but also sending people away for re-education based on the severity of their offenses.
If someone were sent away, it would be like falling from heaven into hell, almost no one could endure life in that “hell.”
Hearing Shen Wuyang’s scolding, Su Meng threw the receiver back at him with even more force. “Then let’s all suffer together! I’m not going to let you all live in luxury while I’m left out in the cold.”
After all, the Su family’s assets had almost been emptied by them, and she had no intention of letting them escape to Hong Kong to live it up.
Hearing her words, the Su family grew both furious and fearful, uniting for once to reprimand her.
As a result, she didn’t notice the gourd mark on her wrist flickering, nor did she notice Huo Zhenhua’s probing gaze and his ever-changing expression.
At that moment, Huo Zhenhua, deeply educated in materialism, stared at Su Meng with confusion.
He was certain that Su Meng had only said, “Then let’s all suffer together! I’m not going to let you all live in luxury while I’m left out in the cold.”
As for the following sentence, “After all, the Su family’s assets had almost been emptied by them, and she had no intention of letting them escape to Hong Kong to live it up”, he would stake his life on it that Su Meng had absolutely not uttered a word.
Yet he had heard it.
What in the world was going on?
Before he could figure it out, two police officers walked in.
“Who reported this?”
“I did,” Su Meng said, raising her right hand as she stepped forward.
Ignoring Shen Wuyang’s warning glare, she quickly explained the entire situation from start to finish.
“Comrades, this is their weapon,” Su Meng presented the syringe.
Zhong Cuilin’s face turned ashen as she tugged at Shen Wuyang’s sleeve, trembling and pleading, “Sir, you must stand up for me. I’m innocent. I-I was just a bit too hasty in my actions.”
Shen Wuyang paused for a moment, then glared fiercely at Zhong Cuilin.
He obsequiously nodded and bowed to the police officers. “Comrades, this is just a small misunderstanding between mother and daughter. Look at all this trouble, ah! Sorry to have troubled you.”
As he spoke, he handed each of them a pack of cigarettes.
Su Meng laughed in disbelief, crossing her arms and retorting righteously, “A misunderstanding? The weapon came from Dr. Zheng Yunting, that’s an indisputable fact. And Zheng Yunting was invited by Zhong Cuilin. Moreover, Zhong Cuilin repeatedly tried to snatch and destroy the weapon, this is a fact witnessed by everyone. You’re trying to confuse the issue and bribe the officers. Ha! How capable of you!”
A flicker of panic crossed Zhong Cuilin’s face.
But in the blink of an eye, she composed herself and spoke with feigned concern, “Xiao Meng, stop being willful, alright?
From now on, whatever you say goes. I won’t interfere anymore.
Look, you’ve hit me, you’ve made a scene, and I won’t hold it against you.
The comrades are busy with important matters. Let’s not waste their time, okay?”
She lifted her swollen face, pleading pitifully, playing the part of a helpless mother trying to reason with a rebellious child.
The two police officers frowned, momentarily unable to discern the truth.
Huo Zhenhua cleared his throat lightly and presented his credentials, “Comrade, I can confirm that what Comrade Su Meng said is true.”
The Su family fell completely silent!
With Huo Zhenhua’s testimony, the fact that Zhong Cuilin and Zheng Yunting intended to poison someone was established.
Su Meng curled her lips into a smile and, under the cover of her sleeve, flicked the powder from her fingers toward Zheng Yunting.
In the next second, Zheng Yunting, who had been about to argue, immediately curled up in agony, screaming, “It hurts! So… so painful! Save me! I’ve been poisoned! Comrade officers, save me quickly!”
“Poisoned?” The officer immediately connected the dots. “He’s the doctor who reaped what he sowed?”
Su Meng nodded, “Yes!”
Zhong Cuilin stepped in front of Zheng Yunting, still trying to cover up: “He… he’s sick, delirious and talking nonsense. Comrade officers, this is just a family matter, no need for you to trouble yourselves.”
The long-faced officer raised his eyebrows and glared, “Do you take us for fools? How dare you obstruct official duties? Take them all away!”
And so, Su Meng celebrated her eighteenth birthday with a day trip to the police station.
