Chapter 3: Housewife
In the early morning, Shen Shanyu was awakened by a gentle voice. Generally speaking, it took him quite a while to get out of bed every morning; he usually insisted on being picked up and coaxed by his mother before he was willing to open his eyes. But now, this voice clearly did not belong to Tang Yiqing, nor did the scent.
Shen Shanyu sat up, rubbed his eyes, and looked at the servant by the bed. He asked dizzily, “Where is my mommy?”
The servant spread out the prepared clothes and said, “Madam is feeling unwell today, so I will be the one taking you to school.”
Upon hearing this, Shen Shanyu’s small face wrinkled up. He said dissatisfiedly, “He didn’t come to tell me a bedtime story last night, and now he’s not coming in the morning either.”
The servant’s hand paused for a moment before she began changing Shen Shanyu’s clothes. “He might be very uncomfortable.”
Shen Shanyu glared at the servant resentfully. “He’s just being lazy.”
The servant lowered her head and silently removed his pajamas, being as careful as possible for fear of upsetting the four-year-old young master.
After washing up, Shen Shanyu ran next door and, as expected, saw Tang Yiqing still lying in bed. He immediately ran to the bedside to check on him.
The person on the bed was still sleeping. Shen Shanyu’s tiny brows furrowed, but then he caught a very fragrant scent of daisies. This was the scent he had grown up with; it gave him a great sense of security and made him feel happy just smelling it.
Shen Shanyu reached out and poked Tang Yiqing’s face with his finger. The next second, Tang Yiqing opened his eyes. He hadn’t actually been asleep; his body was just in pain, and he was resting.
Looking at the little shorty in front of him, Tang Yiqing reached out and rubbed the boy’s soft hair. Shen Shanyu’s big, watery eyes blinked, and he suddenly pulled his hand back, feeling a bit awkward about his previous action. “You’re awake.”
Tang Yiqing curled his lips into a gentle smile. “Why did you come over?”
Shen Shanyu said unhappily, “You didn’t wake me up today.”
“Mommy feels a bit unwell today, so I asked Auntie Lin to wake you,” Tang Yiqing said.
Shen Shanyu wanted to say something else but didn’t. He just let out a “Hmph” and ran out.
Tang Yiqing propped himself up and opened the drawer of the nightstand. He took out a vial of suppressant, unpacked it, and stuck the needle into his vein. After a while, he felt a cooling sensation injected into his body, and his temperature finally dropped a bit. However, he still felt powerless and didn’t want to move at all.
At this time, downstairs at the dining table, Mother Shen looked at the empty seat next to Shen Mingzheng and asked in confusion, “Why hasn’t Yiqing come down for breakfast?”
The servant replied, “The young madam is feeling unwell and is resting upstairs.”
Shen Mingzheng glanced at the servant and couldn’t help but sneer. Playing another trick to get attention? Since seduction didn’t work yesterday, now he’s acting weak and faking illness?
The family didn’t lack high-quality suppressants; there was enough to go around. What was the big deal about a heat cycle?
Mother Shen looked at Shen Mingzheng. “Are you two still living in separate rooms?”
Shen Mingzheng gave a perfunctory hum while looking down at his food. Mother Shen gave him a reproachful look. “He’s sick; did you go see him?”
“Mother, how can a heat cycle be considered a sickness? He’ll be fine in a few days,” Shen Mingzheng said.
Hearing this, Mother Shen froze. The atmosphere at the table became awkward. Father Shen was present, as were the two brothers, Shen Shuowen and Shen Zeqi. Saying something so private in front of the whole family showed that he truly didn’t take Tang Yiqing seriously.
Shen Shanyu was still sitting next to him. The child had known since he was little that his father didn’t love his mother; he was used to Shen Mingzheng’s attitude toward Tang Yiqing. At this moment, although he couldn’t quite understand words like “heat cycle,” he was accustomed to his father’s demeanor.
Mother Shen cleared her throat and grumbled, “Even so, you should provide comfort. You should fulfill your responsibility.”
Shen Mingzheng’s face remained emotionless. He opened his mouth and said casually, “The company is busy these few days. I’ll go when I’m done.”
Shen Shuowen frowned. “Mingzheng, be better to your wife. It wasn’t easy for him to come to our family alone.”
Just as Shen Mingzheng was about to speak, he heard Shen Zeqi let out a cold snort. “Big brother, don’t you know our little brother by now? He doesn’t lack people. He has all sorts of Omegas around him. That Little Wang… oh, Little He. Those two might have even set up another home outside.”
These few words caused anger to appear on Shen Mingzheng’s face. Father Shen, who had been silent, was the first to speak and stop the argument. “What nonsense are you talking about? Shanyu is still here.”
Shen Zeqi was indifferent. “What did I say? It’s the truth. Little Shanyu is closer to that Little He than to his own mother. Right, Shanyu?”
As he spoke, Shen Zeqi looked at Shen Shanyu and spoke in a coaxing manner, “Little Shanyu, tell me, is Second Uncle right? Do you want Uncle He to be your mommy?”
Although Shen Shanyu was only a four-year-old child, the atmosphere frightened him. He didn’t dare speak, but he actually thought about it in his mind: It would be quite nice if Uncle He woke me up every day…
Father Shen slammed his chopsticks down with a “Bang!” “This house is never at peace! Shen Zeqi, if you don’t want to stay in this house, then get out!”
Mother Shen began to smooth things over, but Shen Zeqi acted the part of the rebellious son perfectly. He spread his hands. “You wouldn’t let me move out before, saying you liked the days when the family was all together. Now you’re kicking me out? So, what exactly do you want from me?”
In reality, Father Shen had only said that out of extreme anger; he had no real intention of kicking Shen Zeqi out. They only said they wanted their children by their side, but with so many Alphas in the house, it was difficult to maintain harmony.
The main issue was that although S-class Alphas are at the top of the pyramid, they are prone to pheromone loss-of-control. Their evolution to the top level came with genetic defects. Once they lost control, they either became irrational beasts or madmen. At that point, they might be monitored by relevant departments. This was a concern for many families with S-class Alphas.
In their family, including Father Shen, there were four S-class Alphas. Father Shen had gained a lot of experience dealing with pheromone issues throughout his life, which was why he was unwilling to let his sons move out. The fourth floor was equipped with the country’s most advanced instruments; if any problem occurred, it could be detected and treated in time.
As for Shen Zeqi, he had a condition of pheromone instability. This was why no one in the family dared to provoke him. If he were truly stimulated into losing his mind, no one could handle him. It was even more impossible to let him move out now.
The atmosphere at the table fell silent, and the topic of Shen Zeqi moving out was never mentioned again. The morning ended on an unhappy note, and everyone went about their own business.
Tang Yiqing lay limply until evening. When he finally got out of bed, he felt a bit lighter. Having used twice the usual amount of suppressant and without the stimulation of an Alpha’s pheromones, he felt somewhat recovered, similar to the effect of his previous suppressant doses.
He changed his clothes and left the room. After lying in bed all day, his body felt soft, so he thought about taking a walk outside.
The Shen villa occupied a huge area. The backyard was planted with some ornamental landscapes, and further in was a vegetable garden tended by gardeners every day. Tang Yiqing didn’t go too deep. He went to a pavilion to rest. Next to it was a small man-made waterfall, and the pond was filled with ornamental fish. Tang Yiqing leaned lazily against the back of the chair. He first poured himself a cup of herbal tea, then took a bag of fish food and threw handfuls into the pond.
At night, the rustling of leaves in the wind mixed with the sound of flowing water. Tang Yiqing let his mind go blank, dazed to the point that he didn’t hear the approaching footsteps.
“Still not asleep at this hour?”
A deep, magnetic voice sounded. Tang Yiqing looked over and saw Shen Shuowen standing not far away. He snapped back to reality. “I couldn’t really sleep. Why are you still up, Big Brother?”
As Shen Shuowen approached, Tang Yiqing smelled a faint scent of red wine pheromones. Being in his heat cycle, he was exceptionally sensitive to pheromones; he captured even this faint scent, causing his glands to heat up slightly.
To Tang Yiqing, the scent of the pheromones on Shen Shuowen smelled better than those on Shen Mingzheng, so much so that he actually felt a sliver of desire.
Shen Shuowen stood still a few steps away and did not come closer. The daisy scent in the pavilion scattered with the wind; the fragrance seemed to cling to the fabric of one’s clothes.
“I came out to get some fresh air,” Shen Shuowen said. He saw Tang Yiqing sit up a bit straighter. “The servant said you were sick this morning. Are you feeling better?”
Tang Yiqing couldn’t stand the increasingly hot sensation in his glands; his body was also heating up. He picked up the herbal tea on the table and took a big gulp to suppress it. “Better… I’m better.”
Shen Shuowen remembered what Shen Mingzheng had said in the morning: Heat cycle…
The scent of daisies grew richer. Shen Shuowen said, “That’s good. You should rest. I’ll walk around a bit more.”
With that, Shen Shuowen turned to leave. Tang Yiqing watched his tall back. Although the eldest son of the Shen family was stern and indifferent, he was fairly gentle toward Tang Yiqing.
Seeing him leave, Tang Yiqing breathed a sigh of relief. The red wine scent grew fainter, but Tang Yiqing realized his state was very abnormal. He reached up to touch his gland; it was swollen and hot. Even though the red wine scent had faded, it felt as if it were still lingering right in front of his nose.
It wasn’t as if he hadn’t encountered Alphas during his heat before; after taking suppressants, those pheromones usually had very little effect on him. But tonight seemed different.
Had the suppressants failed? The doctor had told him that in his current state, it was best not to use suppressants anymore. He already had symptoms of mild pheromone disorder; if it got worse, it could lead to a total loss of pheromone control, which would be very dangerous.
Tang Yiqing waved his hand in front of his nose as if to wave away the scent. His head was spinning, and his body was getting hotter, as if he had returned to the very start of his heat cycle. The injected suppressants had failed.
I have to get back quickly. Tang Yiqing stood up, and for a moment his legs were so soft he almost fell. He steadied himself against the table and then slowly walked out.
The night was deep. Shen Shuowen stood by a cage smoking a cigarette. Inside was a black panther raised by Shen Zeqi. Under the dim lights, the black fur emitted a glossy sheen. When it was first brought back, it was untamably wild; now its ferocity had lessened, though it would still pounce at the cage when someone passed by.
When Shen Shuowen approached just now, the black panther had pounced, but as he got closer, it slowly crouched on the ground as if meeting an opponent it feared. It became docile. Shen Shuowen watched by the cage for a while, then threw a piece of meat to it and turned to head back the way he came.
The cigarette butt in his mouth glowed with sparks, flickering in the dark. When he passed the pavilion, it was already empty. Walking further, he saw Tang Yiqing’s back. The figure was swaying as if he might collapse at any moment.
Tang Yiqing felt that his mind was still clear, but his body was impossibly soft. Fine sweat broke out on his forehead. Just as he felt increasingly top-heavy and about to fall, an arm suddenly wrapped around his waist and pulled him up.
The scent of red wine mixed with tobacco entered his nostrils. He couldn’t help but shiver. He looked to the side and saw Shen Shuowen frowning slightly. “Are you alright?”
Tang Yiqing slowly shook his head, feeling embarrassed. He didn’t know if Shen Shuowen already knew he was in his special period. Fortunately, he didn’t ask anything; he only felt the arm on his waist was rock hard, as if the muscles were all tensed up.
“I’ll take you back,” Shen Shuowen said.
Tang Yiqing gave a soft response. The two stopped talking, and it was so quiet only their footsteps could be heard. After a while, Tang Yiqing was drenched in sweat. His neck unconsciously leaned against Shen Shuowen’s shoulder; his body was so soft he had no strength left. This scent, which he found so pleasant, enveloped him. Under these circumstances, he didn’t know if it was torture or relief.
The blue veins on Shen Shuowen’s forehead became visible. Just as Tang Yiqing’s body was about to slide down from his arm, he directly picked him up in a princess carry.
Tang Yiqing let out a cry of surprise. His dangling legs swayed with the accelerated pace. His gaze flickered, and he unconsciously stared at Shen Shuowen’s tensed jaw until the other man’s dark eyes lowered. At the moment they locked eyes, his heart trembled, and he hurriedly looked away.
Shen Shuowen moved very fast. He entered the villa and went to the second floor. “Which room?”
Tang Yiqing pointed weakly. Shen Shuowen walked over quickly, pressed the door handle, and entered. The bed in the bedroom was made neatly; there wasn’t a single item belonging to Shen Mingzheng.
He placed Tang Yiqing on the bed and immediately asked where the suppressants were. Tang Yiqing felt ashamed and embarrassed as he pointed feebly toward the drawer.
His husband wasn’t there to take care of him during his heat; instead, his husband’s older brother was in his room, even helping him administer the suppressant.
Shen Shuowen tossed the empty vial into the trash can and then stood up. “Get some good rest.”
Tang Yiqing nodded to him. Without extra movements or words, providing Tang Yiqing with enough dignity, Shen Shuowen turned and strode out of the room.
