Affectionate Obsession - Chapter 27
Though the day had dawned, Yeonhee remained curled up on the living room sofa, unmoving.
Her eyes, gazing at an unknown point, were dully devoid of light.
They looked just like those of a dead person.
Inside, it was no different.
Her mind felt completely blacked out.
No thoughts came, and she couldn’t grasp what to do or how to do it.
Only Junhyeok’s voice kept replaying, like an echo.
‘Yoon Sera and you, you’re twin sisters.’
She didn’t believe it. She thought it was just Junhyeok’s mischievous prank. But after returning home and seeing the paper he held out to her with her own eyes, there was no way not to believe it.
On the paper Junhyeok handed over, along with the unfamiliar name Yoon Seyeon, were the names of the RM Group chairman and his wife.
Besides that, there was more information about a newborn infant, but the only things that remained in her memory were the names of those three people.
And that the child named Yoon Seyeon was born as the second of the twins at the time.
In truth, with just that, there were too many parts that couldn’t be understood to think the child named Yoon Seyeon was her.
Wouldn’t that be the case? Even if the RM Chairman and his wife had twins at birth, one of them could have died due to bad luck, and thus only Yoon Sera might have remained as the RM Group’s child.
But to think that way, the birth certificate Junhyeok handed over clearly proved that the RM Chairman and his wife had twin daughters, and Yoon Sera, the daughter of the RM Group, and she looked eerily alike.
No matter how she looked, she couldn’t find any difference.
The resemblance between Yoon Sera and Shin Yeonhee was so striking that it led to the absurd act of her being a substitute bride.
‘Although it’s a copy, the person who gave it to me said they received it directly when you were born. The circumstantial evidence is strong, but I’m still investigating in case that person might be lying. If you’re okay with it, I’m thinking of doing a DNA test on you and Yoon Sera.’
Junhyeok’s expression when he said that was more serious than ever before. It meant he wasn’t saying baseless things just to hold onto her.
‘It’s not that you took Yoon Sera’s place. Perhaps, if your family hadn’t abandoned you when you were born, you and I might have gotten married.’
There was nothing wrong with Junhyeok’s subsequent words either. If she were truly the RM Group’s daughter, this position could have been hers, not Yoon Sera’s.
It meant she wouldn’t have to feel the gap between Shin Yeonhee, who shouldn’t be by Jung Junhyeok’s side because she had no money, and Yoon Sera, who had the qualifications because she did.
As her thoughts organized to that point, even breathing felt excruciatingly painful for Yeonhee.
Why did it happen? What did she, who merely came into existence, do so wrong to be abandoned right after birth?
The more thoughts piled on, the deeper her resentment grew.
Yeonhee released her legs that she had been hugging. Then, she picked up her cell phone from the coffee table.
Without hesitation, she dialed Junhyeok’s number.
— Oh, Yeonhee.
Before the ringing even finished, Junhyeok’s voice was heard.
Perhaps worried that something might have happened, Junhyeok’s voice was full of concern.
But that wasn’t what was important to Yeonhee now.
“Tell me the address of the RM Group’s main residence.”
Yeonhee stated her business in a voice that was dry and parched.
— Why the address all of a sudden?
There was no grand reason.
Yeonhee replied clearly.
“I want to go see it.”
— If it’s something like that, I’ll go with you after work.
“No.”
She flatly refused Junhyeok’s offer, which was full of worry.
“I’ll go alone. I want to.”
Saying so, Yeonhee got up from her seat.
She headed straight for the bedroom. Her mind was filled only with the outfits Sera had worn.
There was no way her closet would contain expensive designer clothes that Sera wore.
So, the department store was the first stop.
There wasn’t much time. Yeonhee grabbed her coat and once again demanded of Junhyeok through the phone.
“Send me the address by text. I’m hanging up now, knowing what I need to know.”
Yeonhee got out of the taxi and stared intently at the high wall directly in front of her.
The address Junhyeok had sent was for a mansion in Seongbuk-dong.
Now that she saw it with her own eyes, the resentment filling her chest intensified.
Yeonhee clenched her fists tightly and walked towards the gate.
On her feet were high-heeled shoes painted a bright red.
It was a design far from Yeonhee’s usual style.
Moreover, the clothes she was wearing were the same. But if one assumed they were clothes Sera would wear, the story changed.
From the clothes she wore to the shoes and the bag she carried, everything perfectly matched Sera’s taste.
Even the accessories she wore were from brands Sera frequented.
It wasn’t easy to grasp Sera’s taste so perfectly with just a few encounters.
Yet, the reason she could transform into Yoon Sera in an instant was all thanks to Junhyeok.
The brands I sent you are the ones Yoon Sera often visits. I confirmed it through a VIP card at a department store via an acquaintance, so it should be accurate.
Junhyeok’s text message contained several high-end brand names.
Yeonhee went to the respective brands without delay and made purchases.
She spent an amount she had never spent in her life, but she felt nothing.
Yeonhee stared intently at the tightly shut gate.
The thought that people who might be her family lived beyond this gate stirred an unbearable rage within her.
She tried her best to suppress that emotion. She shouldn’t get this agitated already.
If she were to be angry, she had to do it after seeing with her own eyes how lavishly her parents who abandoned her were living, and how comfortably they were living after abandoning her.
Yeonhee took a deep breath and pressed the doorbell. A cheerful bell sound rang, and soon a stranger’s voice asking for identification was heard.
Yeonhee answered without hesitation.
“It’s me, Sera.”
With those single words, the gate, which seemed like it would never open, creaked open with a heavy sound.
Yeonhee gripped the gate handle tightly. As she was about to enter, fear washed over her.
If she saw them living happily after abandoning her, she felt she might lose control and cause a scene right there.
But such worries were for after she entered the house.
Yeonhee pushed the gate with force. Then, she unhesteringly stepped inside.
“Oh my, Miss has arrived?”
As she opened the inner door, a woman she had never seen before, wearing an apron, greeted her.
Judging by her appearance, she seemed to be a housekeeper taking care of the household chores.
Yeonhee recalled Sera’s face from what she had seen and put on a smile that Sera might wear.
“Have you been well?”
“Of course! You’ve become so calm after getting married? The Madam is in the study, so hurry and go see her.”
At the housekeeper’s words, Yeonhee’s brow furrowed slightly. The title “Madam,” and she had no way of knowing where the study was.
As she pondered how to navigate this hurdle, an unexpected voice was heard at that moment.
“Sera, are you here?”
Yeonhee rolled her eyes towards the source of the sound. Then, she saw an elderly person with white hair walking towards her with elegant steps.
“You’re coming out just in time. I’ll bring tea. Catch up with the Madam for a long time, Miss.”
Though she had somewhat guessed, Yeonhee was now certain at the housekeeper’s words.
“Madam” referred to this white-haired elder, and the elder seemed to be Yoon Sera’s grandmother.
In other words.
“Have you been well, Grandmother.”
This was someone who might be her own grandmother.
Yeonhee clenched her fists, hidden behind her back, and wore a smile.
“Yes, my puppy. What brings you here without notice?”
“I missed you.”
As soon as she spoke, Yeonhee pursed her lips. The word “Grandmother,” which she had never uttered before, felt rough in her mouth.
“I was just thinking it would be nice to see my granddaughter’s face, and it seems my Sera has come. Sit down for now.”
Unaware of her inner turmoil, the elder invited Yeonhee to sit. The seat she indicated was by the sofa placed in the center of the vast living room.
Yeonhee followed the elder, extending her legs. After confirming the elder sat in the place of honor, she sat in the seat next to her.
Even after dressing from head to toe to appear as Yoon Sera, she worried if she might be found out. But it seemed to be a needless worry.
Neither the housekeeper nor the elder seemed to suspect for a moment that she wasn’t Yoon Sera.
Just then, the housekeeper appeared carrying a tray with teacups.
Yeonhee calmly set down her bag and looked at the teacup placed before her.
“So, is married life treating you well?”
The elder asked in a voice that was not entirely light. Yeonhee nodded without the slightest hesitation.
“Yes. Junhyeok treats me well, and it’s much better than I expected. We’re doing well.”
“Really? I was worried you might be awkward with Junhyeok due to the sudden marriage, but it seems I worried for nothing.”
The elder smiled gently and took a sip of the tea before her.
Watching her like that, Yeonhee felt her insides burning.
The elder, who believed her to be Yoon Sera, looked at her with affection at all times. Her tone was the same. There was nothing in her gaze or words that wasn’t imbued with affection for her.
Yoon Sera must have grown up in a home like this.
Not only financially, but also showered with affection.
She must have grown up happily in an environment where nothing was lacking, unlike herself.
“Yes, Grandmother. I’m doing very well. Junhyeok’s parents also dote on me a lot.”
“Haha, of course. They should. Who in the world would dislike Sera like you? You seemed worried before marriage, but it looks like you’re doing very well. You’re truly my bloodline.”
Yeonhee stared intently at the elder’s pleased face. She had a hearty smile, as if she were happy, but somehow, behind the elder’s laughter, there seemed to be another, inexplicable meaning hidden.
She wanted to know that meaning. No effort was needed to decipher it.
“I’m so glad I chose you. No matter how many times I think about it, Sera, you are Choi Sookhee’s granddaughter.”
Yeonhee’s eyes, reflecting Sookhee’s image, began to tremble.
Yeonhee bit the soft flesh inside her mouth.
The words, “No matter how many times I think about it, Sera, you are Choi Sookhee’s granddaughter,” echoed in her ears repeatedly.
Those words sounded like they meant that out of the twins born, only Yoon Sera could be recognized as the family’s bloodline, and the elder’s granddaughter.
“My choices are never wrong.”
Sookhee’s words followed immediately.
After hearing that, she didn’t even need to reconsider her thoughts from a moment ago.
Far from reconsidering, the word ‘choice’ that came out of the elder’s voice felt like it had torn her heart to shreds.
Yeonhee bit down harder on the soft flesh inside her mouth. If she didn’t, tears would surely burst forth.
