Chapter 4: The First World – Cyberpunk (4)
“D*mn it, that’s the chick on the wanted poster! Catch her!”
The roar from nearby snapped Su Wang out of his stupor. He sprinted out of the elevator, moving faster than the tattooed men. Although he had no idea how Lin Qingyu was alive again, he had taken those first two lives himself, so the third one rightfully belonged to him as well.
As for Lilith, that government dog had chased him for so long and shattered several of his ribs. Su Wang wouldn’t be able to face his own ribs if he didn’t chop her head off with his own hands.
Curses and footsteps echoed incessantly behind him. The fastest tattooed man was running almost neck-and-neck with Su Wang. He didn’t pay any attention to the “pretty boy” beside him, focusing entirely on the target. Seeing the man and woman deep in the corridor about to duck into a crowded shopping mall, the tattooed man cursed in German, drew his gun from his waist, and prepared to fire.
“Thomas! Keep the woman alive! The warrant demands she be captured alive—just blast the guy!”
Hearing his companion’s shout, the tattooed man changed targets. Just as he was about to pull the trigger, a sharp, searing pain erupted in his waist. A split second later, Thomas went flying while maintaining his firing stance. His eyes widened as he watched his own lower half—left behind on the ground—slowly collapse.
The bespectacled “pretty boy” had pulled a samurai sword from out of nowhere and was turning to slash at his companion. “Don’t you dare snatch them! They’re all mine—they’re all mine!”
Lin Qingyu had ducked into the mall with the female cop, initially intending to take a breather. Hearing that familiar voice, Lilith’s hair stood on end, and she yanked him forcefully into the throng of people.
After being “double-killed” by Su Wang, Lin Qingyu had successfully resurrected using the contraband lottery ticket provided by Little Coward. After spending a long time summarizing their experience, man and system reached a single conclusion: Lin Qingyu’s top priority was to cheat.
As a male lead in a harem power-fantasy, Su Wang was nearly invincible in this world, standing at the absolute ceiling of combat power. He basically never lost a 1v1, and even when mobbed, he wouldn’t even get a speck of dust on his clothes. The few times he was injured, it was always by the heroines, and those wounds were just there to deepen their emotional bonds.
The first two times, Lin Qingyu had no defenses and was killed instantly. Now that he was on guard, he would merely be killed “slowly.”
Lin Qingyu mocked Little Coward’s choice of words.
“You can hold out for a minute at most under his hands; what else would you call it but a ‘slow-kill’? I’ve studied the original text, any good-looking woman in there can trade blows with the male lead.”
And?
“So, you should go get a sex change.”
Lin Qingyu rejected the suggestion and filed a complaint against it. Little Coward immediately fell to its knees, frantically apologizing while pointing to the compensation items it had managed to secure for him. Among a pile of gray, useless items, three card packs were lit up and usable in this world:
-
Guardian Sturdy-Man: Randomly unbox an egg to obtain a “Guardian Sturdy-Man” exclusive to you.
-
Magical Boy Lin: Oh, card pack hiding the power of a cheat, show your true strength before me! Now, in the name of your master, “Little-Deng,” I command you—open! Randomly obtain a magic card.
-
Master Egg-Detective Little-Deng: No matter how thick the pack is, there is only one card inside!
As Little Coward showed him the items, it appeared to be casually showing off its wall of figurines. Seeing the massive Edogawa Conan figure, Lin Qingyu had reason to suspect that the system hadn’t actually gotten him any real company compensation. It was just passing off its own fan-made parody merch to pad the inventory.
Even the names of the props were changed on the spot to match Lin Qingyu’s traits. The items that weren’t lit up weren’t “beyond the world’s capacity”—it was just that the system was low on stock and hadn’t finished making them yet.
Lin Qingyu opened all three packs. “Guardian Sturdy-Man” produced a card with a red-striped egg drawn on it. The egg needed a full night to hatch and was currently useless. “Master Egg-Detective” produced a “Stealth” card.
By wearing a bow tie and crouching while walking, he could drastically lower his presence and gain the ability to change his voice.
The effect didn’t work on major characters from the original book, and the voice change had a chance of being discovered. It wasn’t suitable for the current situation.
The only thing he could use was the “Small” card drawn from the “Magical Boy” pack.
Lin Qingyu caught a delivery drone in the corridor. Using the “Small” card, he shrank to the size of a fingernail and perched on the disc. He bypassed the male lead by taking the drone’s express pipeline, arriving at the 113th floor ahead of time. Relying on clues Little Coward found in the original text, he successfully locked onto Su Wang’s temporary hideout.
Lin Qingyu squeezed through a gap in the electronic door and found the female cop, Lilith, hidden behind a well-concealed secret door. Something resembling boxing gloves locked her hands; a short, thick iron chain connected the metal gloves to the bed frame.
She had likely sensed Su Wang’s murderous intent and realized that if she stayed, she would lose her life. Lilith was crouching by the bed, having bitten her left wrist until it was a bloody mess, with chunks of flesh scattered at her feet.
When Lin Qingyu arrived, the cop was busy eating her own meat and drinking her blood to maintain her stamina. She was a ruthless person—if pushed to the limit, she’d even eat herself.
Little Coward advised Lin Qingyu not to expose his “Magical Boy” identity; the “Small” card was his only trump card right now. Lin Qingyu didn’t plan on going in directly, either, fearing Lilith might eat him like a cockroach.
Little Coward urged him to know his place—not to get cocky just because he had a cheat code. A cockroach can be squashed flat and still walk away; if you get squashed, you’ll just explode into a pile of guts.
Lin Qingyu suddenly realized this system was truly insufferable.
Su Wang’s rental apartment also had weapons. Lin Qingyu reverted to his original size, stole a piece of Su Wang’s clothing, grabbed a gun that looked particularly badass, and blasted open the secret door with one shot. He rescued Lilith, who was busy gnawing on bones.
The “Q&A” scene he’d imagined didn’t happen. The female cop didn’t fight him, nor did she pin him to the ground to interrogate him. After roughly bandaging her wounds, she grabbed him and ran. Lin Qingyu was disappointed—the little script he had meticulously choreographed didn’t get used.
Lin Qingyu’s affection for Su Wang plummeted. The man wasn’t just mentally ill; he was incredibly conceited. There wasn’t a single piece of casual wear in the closet—everything was tailored suits. He had no idea how he found the time for bespoke tailoring while on the run.
The clothes fit so tightly that even a bit of extra muscle made him feel constricted. The muscles Lin Qingyu had spent so much money training had become a burden. He couldn’t worry about being decent anymore, so he tore off his shirt buttons as he ran.
The feeling of being able to breathe freely is great.
Looking at it this way, Su Wang’s physique wasn’t as solid as his. Fiction was fiction, reality was reality. Force can overcome ten kinds of skill—perhaps the next time we meet, I can go toe-to-toe with the male lead.
Lilith turned to look at him. Lin Qingyu subconsciously puffed out his wheat-colored chest. “Like what you see? We can negotiate the price.”
Lilith: ?
Little Coward: ?
“What are you doing?”
Showcasing my commercial value. “Huh?”
The cop wiped the blood from her face with a complicated expression. The Future Tower corridor was extremely long—long enough to run a thousand-meter physical fitness test. Lin Qingyu hadn’t been outside since he transmigrated and had no idea how big the building actually was. Before they could reach the corner, Lilith suddenly turned back. “The elevator dinged. Someone is coming up.”
There were people drinking and chatting in the corridor, and a gun shop next door was hosting a shooting event. How the hell did she grow her ears to be this sharp?
Lin Qingyu followed her gaze and saw only a few silhouettes, unable to make out the faces. The cop shrunk her head down and dragged Lin Qingyu into the crowd as hard as she could.
“Run! It’s Su Wang! I don’t have a weapon; I can’t beat him. Don’t let him catch up—the guy is sick!”
Having been killed twice by him, Lin Qingyu couldn’t agree more.
Lilith was right at home in the Future Tower, navigating like a human GPS, leading Lin Qingyu through turn after turn. Soon, a colorful, gaudy street appeared before them. At the entrance to the street stood a sign: “No. 113 Beauty Street.”
Lin Qingyu: … If I remember correctly, this is the street for sex workers.
Fearing a misunderstanding, he explained while buttoning his shirt. “Misunderstanding, I’m not a gigolo; I don’t have a foothold on Beauty Street.”
The female cop was checking the wounds on her wrists. A pair of blue-based, white-pupiled mechanical eyes flashed with cold electric current, seemingly analyzing his data. Being stared at by such eyes made Lin Qingyu feel very uncomfortable. After flickering for a long time, the cop finally smiled.
“No misunderstanding. You’re wearing a collar; I know you’re one of the Stray Dogs. The Stray Dogs have too many rules; you wouldn’t be able to do side-jobs on Beauty Street.”
“I came here because I’m familiar with it. I did a lot of homework to capture Su Wang. There are many private rooms on Beauty Street, and the lighting is dimmer than elsewhere—it’s the best place to hide. I spent some time here posing as a hostess and got to know them well. I have my own room.”
Lin Qingyu gave her a thumbs up. Lilith lifted her chin proudly.
During the escape, the cop hadn’t spoken, perfectly matching her cold, queen-like persona in the original book. He hadn’t expected that once she relaxed, she’d be so talkative. For every sentence Lin Qingyu said, she said ten.
“The Stray Dogs and the government have always cooperated. In the Future Tower, only you guys would care if a government dog lives or dies. Others wouldn’t lift a finger even if they were paid.” Lilith sighed self-deprecatingly. “By the way, how did you know I was being imprisoned? Was there a bounty mission released by the government to rescue me?”
Lin Qingyu couldn’t reveal the system. “No, I saw your wanted poster on the wall.”
Lilith deflated like a punctured balloon. Lin Qingyu was just about to say something comforting when his ears caught a low, gentle chuckle.
“Qingyu?”
The gentle male voice drifted from afar, and then a face poked out from the shadows, looking at the two of them in surprise. Lin Qingyu was so startled he shuddered.
Su Wang tilted his head. “Great, you’re both still alive. Someone wanted to kill you just now, and I was really worried. What would I have done if something happened to you?”
“Qingyu, you run so fast. It took me so much effort to catch up to you. I killed you twice, and you lived twice. Although I don’t know how that works, I’m so happy.”
Su Wang pulled out that “cremation gun,” thought of something, and put it away again. He didn’t leave or speak; he just stood at the corner. His peach-blossom eyes were locked straight onto his waist, staring until Lin Qingyu’s scalp went numb.
