- Chapter 50 - The Cold Professor X The Sweet Beauty
When they went down, they couldn’t find Yan Han in the resting area at first, until they spotted her figure at a small food stall set up on the side.
Seeing the way she was devouring food, Su Mi asked, “Did you guys not eat breakfast?”
Lin Nanyue shook her head. “No, we left too early this morning.” It had been such a rush that there was simply no time to eat.
Su Mi originally wanted to buy her something, but Lin Nanyue stopped her, stating she didn’t have much of an appetite right now.
Since she didn’t want to eat, Su Mi didn’t force her.
Ultimately, they took the well-fed Yan Han and continued their climb. The three of them finally managed to reach the summit before nine o’clock.
The weather today wasn’t great. Thick layers of clouds blocked the sunlight once again, leaving the distant scenery covered in a hazy layer of grayish-white.
Having struggled to reach the top, Yan Han held her phone on the platform, comparing angles with exquisite photos online, grumbling indignantly about “photo scams” and “everything being heavily edited.”
Lin Nanyue seemed somewhat uninterested in the scenery and even less interested in taking photos. Su Mi felt the same, so the two of them simply found a relatively empty spot to stand and recover their strength.
They watched Yan Han take photos everywhere by herself. Once she finished, they decided to head back down the mountain.
The path down was much easier than the way up. Since Yan Han stopped complaining about being tired at every turn, their descent speed increased significantly.
At the foot of the mountain was an open air parking lot. Su Mi had parked her car there when she arrived, so she could drive Lin Nanyue and Yan Han back.
When Lin Nanyue saw the car, she noticed it wasn’t the one she had ridden in before. Sensing her confusion, Su Mi explained, “My car is restricted today due to the license plate number, so I borrowed a friend’s.”
After getting in, Lin Nanyue noticed the fragrance in the car was slightly sweet, though not cloyingly so. It definitely wasn’t Professor Su’s usual style.
“Where are you two heading?” Su Mi asked the two sitting in the back seat after getting in.
They immediately indicated they wanted to return to the school to rest.
Because she had woken up early and climbed the mountain for so long, Lin Nanyue began yawning shortly after the car started moving.
On the way, Yan Han suddenly remembered the upcoming holiday and asked Lin Nanyue if she had bought her ticket home yet.
Lin Nanyue paused for a moment and said no, mentioning that she might not be going back.
Su Mi listened to their conversation from the front, occasionally glancing at Lin Nanyue in the rearview mirror, only to unexpectedly lock eyes with her.
The latter likely hadn’t expected the eye contact either. Before Su Mi could react, Lin Nanyue had already looked down, blinking nervously a few times, her sleepiness dissipating quite a bit.
About forty minutes later, the car reached the vicinity of the school.
Yan Han was the first to say goodbye to Su Mi and get out. Just as Lin Nanyue was preparing to say her goodbyes, Su Mi called out to her.
“Nanyue, you left something at my house the other day. Why don’t you come back with me today to pick it up?”
Lin Nanyue dazed for a moment because her name had come out of Professor Su’s mouth so naturally, and it took a second for the rest of the sentence to register.
With one hand on the car door, she asked in confusion, “What did I leave?”
Was she really that forgetful?
“A small item, you might not remember it,” Su Mi said as she rolled down the window, speaking to Yan Han outside. “Student Yan, Nanyue has something at my place and needs to come back with me to get it.”
Yan Han looked at Su Mi and then at Lin Nanyue in the back seat. Although she was a bit confused by the situation, she wasn’t slow. “I see. Then I’ll head back first.”
Su Mi nodded politely to her. “Goodbye.”
It wasn’t until the car door closed again that Lin Nanyue realized she still couldn’t remember what she had left at Professor Su’s house.
Su Mi said, “It fell under the coffee table. I only found it when I was cleaning up. Looking at the shape, it’s probably a keychain charm.”
Hearing this, Lin Nanyue remembered there was indeed an inconspicuous keychain hanging on her bag. She just hadn’t paid much attention to it and didn’t even realize it was missing.
“That thing isn’t expensive, it doesn’t matter.”
As she spoke, Su Mi had already merged into the main road. “Regardless, it’s your property. Whether you want it or not, you should at least take a look at it before deciding.”
Lin Nanyue fell silent.
This clumsy excuse served as a bridge between the two, who were each harboring their own thoughts. They stood at the intersection leading toward each other with a silent understanding.
Su Mi’s residence wasn’t too far from the school, but the roads were a bit congested at this hour. Seeing that it was almost lunchtime, Su Mi decided to take her out for a meal before heading back.
Once they arrived, Su Mi opened the door and walked in. Realizing the person behind her hadn’t followed, she turned and signaled with her eyes for her to enter.
“Do I still need to go in?” Lin Nanyue had originally thought she would just take the item and leave without entering.
Su Mi placed the keys on the wooden entryway console with a crisp clink and said, “Come in and sit for a bit. We’ve been out half the day, you can’t expect me to send you back without giving me a moment to rest.”
She had rushed to the mountain after seeing Lin Nanyue’s location on her social media feed today. To catch up with her, she had naturally climbed much faster. Even though the mountain wasn’t high, she was bound to be tired.
“That’s not what I meant.” Lin Nanyue also saw that Professor Su did indeed look tired. She swallowed the words she was about to say about going back to school on her own.
Su Mi gave a light response and bent down to take the same pair of slippers she had given Lin Nanyue last time from the shoe cabinet, placing them in front of her.
Lin Nanyue took the opportunity to glance at the cabinet and noticed there were no extra slippers. As she walked inside, she found that the layout of the house was much the same as when she had left last time.
“What would you like to drink?” Su Mi asked her.
Lin Nanyue shook her head. Having just eaten, she didn’t want anything.
Nevertheless, Su Mi brought her a glass of water and then led her to the living room to sit down.
Su Mi walked over to a bookshelf on the side and took down the keychain Lin Nanyue had left behind.
“Is this yours?”
Lin Nanyue nodded.
She reached out to take the slightly faded keychain doll. The doll’s original pink and blue hair had become mottled from the fading color, and the faded spots glinted slightly when turned.
“Do you want to keep it?”
Lin Nanyue felt the hard plastic texture. The peeling colors made it look incredibly cheap, yet for the first time, she felt it was profoundly important.
She pulled the keychain into her palm and looked up at Su Mi, her voice clear and bright: “Yes.”
Su Mi was infected by the smile on her face and curled her lips slightly.
Having sweated a bit from the climb, Su Mi felt a little uncomfortable even though she was dry now. She decided to take a shower.
“Do you want to take a shower too?” Su Mi asked. “I’ve restocked everything in the guest bedroom bathroom.”
After the last time, she had specifically bought many items to keep in the guest room for emergencies.
Lin Nanyue waved her hands in a hurried refusal. What would it look like if she took a shower every time she came to someone’s house? People would wonder what they were doing.
Su Mi: “Then wait for me in the living room for a bit.”
Lin Nanyue watched Su Mi go inside. The large living room was left with only her. She sat on the sofa looking at the surrounding decorations for a while and then began to feel a little bored.
Eventually, she opened her phone and began browsing.
Because she knew Professor Su had a “girlfriend,” she had recently been quietly searching for information about relationships between two women on various social media apps.
She didn’t know if it was because of this, but she actually started frequently coming across videos and information about two girls.
Lin Nanyue had intended to just skim through. She had already swiped up past the page, but her fingertip paused, and she scrolled back down to it.
After hesitating, she clicked in.
Since the living room was so empty, she turned the volume to the lowest setting. The video was an explanation and edit of a movie. She went from being curious to gradually getting absorbed in it, shifting from a sitting position to half-lying down.
However, because the narrator’s voice was quite soft, she gradually felt sleepy after listening for a while. Though her eyes were still on the phone, they were half-closed. Occasionally, when she saw something particularly striking, she would wake up slightly.
Inside the room, Su Mi felt much more refreshed after her shower. Her freshly blow-dried hair was slightly fluffy. She walked to the wardrobe and took out an apricot colored shirt to put on.
She casually tied up her hair and put on her glasses as she walked out.
There was no sound in the living room. Only when she got closer could she hear a faint voice coming from a phone.
Su Mi walked over and saw Lin Nanyue lying on her side on the sofa with her eyes closed. She was still holding her phone properly, the screen facing herself.
A video was playing on the phone. Su Mi crouched down and tilted her head to look. She found it was scenes from a film, except the leads were two women.
At this moment, the video reached its end. Music suddenly swelled, waking the half-asleep Lin Nanyue. She happened to see the side profiles of the two leads leaning toward each other, followed by the black screen at the end.
She was dazed for a second, slowly coming to her senses. Then she discovered Su Mi crouching by the sofa. Before she could speak, the phone automatically started playing the next video.
A female voice, distinctly different from the previous video, rang out.
“Hello everyone! We are XXX, and today we’re going to tell you what it’s like to kiss a girl.”
The girl’s incessant voice in the video stopped abruptly. Lin Nanyue’s hand, which had urgently pressed the lock button, was even trembling slightly.
Her cheeks and the tips of her ears instantly turned a deep red. Her lips moved, but she didn’t dare make a sound, and her eyes didn’t dare meet Su Mi’s.
Su Mi looked at her with a half-smile. After a long moment, she suddenly straightened her upper body and leaned in, supporting herself with her hands on the edge of the sofa.
Having just showered, she carried a trace of bath fragrance, fresh and not overpowering.
Lin Nanyue had nowhere left to retreat. She didn’t dare meet Su Mi’s gaze, so her eyes landed randomly elsewhere.
From her position, she could just see Su Mi’s slender neck. Perhaps because of the recent shower, her neck wasn’t as pale as usual, but was flushed with an inconspicuous layer of red.
A woman’s Adam’s apple isn’t prominent, but upon close inspection in some individuals, a slight protrusion can still be vaguely seen.
She saw Su Mi’s throat move almost imperceptibly as she swallowed.
Su Mi slowed her breathing. Due to the height difference, a few loose strands of her bangs fell by her ear, the tips grazing Lin Nanyue’s cheek.
When she stopped her approach, their lips seemed to be only half a centimeter apart. If they spoke with a slightly larger movement, they would touch.
“It’s like this.”
