- Chapter 3 - The System - Lin Yishu Experiences Unprecedented Warmth
Li Yan’s house was located not far from the village entrance, and since it was still early, they encountered almost no one along the way.
The only exception was Auntie Zhang from next door, who happened to be out early feeding her chickens.
“Yanyan, off work already? I heard your mom say you didn’t come home all day yesterday; you must be exhausted from the factory… Eh? Who’s that you’re carrying? This little girl is quite…”
Li Yan turned her body slightly to shield the person on her back and interrupted with a smile, “I haven’t slept in over a day, so I really am worn out. Auntie Zhang, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head inside. I’ll see how things go in a couple of days, if there’s extra pork, I’ll let you know.”
Auntie Zhang had been curious about the beautiful girl on her back, but the moment she heard that, she tossed her curiosity aside. She responded beamishly, “Aye! That works. If there is, you must remember to tell me. I’ll trade you some eggs for it!”
After finishing with Auntie Zhang, Li Yan didn’t dare delay any longer and hurried into the courtyard.
Li Can, who was coming out to pour out some wash water, saw her sister return and a smile instantly broke across her face. “Sis, you’re finally off! Mom and Grandma were just talking about you. Mom! Grandma! My sister is back…”
The young girl’s voice was crisp and clear in the early morning. She hollered toward the house, and soon, two heads poked out from behind the glass window.
Still on Li Yan’s back, Lin Yishu was currently wide-eyed, curiously taking in this unfamiliar courtyard. Without realizing it, she locked eyes with three tilting heads.
“Sis, who is this pretty sister on your back?” Li Can had been immersed in the excitement of her sister’s return, and only now did she notice there was someone else. She tilted her neck curiously. “Is she also from your factory…”
Realizing that the place where her sister worked was a slaughterhouse, Li Can cut herself off mid-sentence and changed her phrasing. “Is she your friend?”
However, inside the house, Xu Xiufen and Li Chunmei immediately noticed the girl on their granddaughter/daughter’s back.
The two blinked, their gazes moving from the girl’s striking face down to the leather shoes on her feet, shoes that looked expensive at a glance. Both of their eyelids twitched in unison.
“Li Can, you’re the one with the big mouth! Can’t you wait until your sister gets inside to talk? You’re blocking the doorway. Move aside and let your sister in quickly…” Li Chunmei scolded her younger daughter while lifting the cotton door curtain.
Li Can stuck her tongue out but didn’t talk back, quickly making room.
Li Yan carried the girl into the house.
Xu Xiufen had already moved a long wooden bench over and patted it. “Put her down here.”
She then asked her granddaughter with concern, “Are you tired?”
Li Yan drank some hot water, walked around the bench, and sat opposite them, shaking her head. “Not tired. She’s very light.”
Lin Yishu was already feeling a bit shy from their staring, and hearing them discuss her weight to her face made a rare flush of embarrassment creep onto her cheeks.
However, before the blush could fully spread, the other woman followed up with another sentence.
“She’s much lighter than the pigs at our factory. Carrying those pigs doesn’t tire me out, so carrying her a few steps is nothing!”
Lin Yishu: “……”
In all her years, this was the first time someone had compared her to a pig!
Her face was a mix of shame and annoyance. It took a massive effort to suppress her temper as she lowered her head, looking somewhat pitiful.
[Pfft.]
At that exact moment, a voice in her mind let out a mocking laugh.
The veins on Lin Yishu’s forehead throbbed. She vented all the anger she couldn’t release externally onto this voice: “Shut up! If you laugh again, I can’t guarantee what I’ll do next. You know I’m capable of anything!”
The voice fell silent instantly, as if it had never existed.
The gloom in Lin Yishu’s heart dissipated a bit, and she felt much better.
On the other side, Li Chunmei pushed another cup of hot water toward Lin Yishu. Hearing her daughter’s answer, her hand shook, and she couldn’t help but smack Li Yan’s arm. “What kind of nonsense are you talking? Your grandmother is worried you’re tired from work, and you say that!”
As she spoke, she couldn’t help but glance at the girl with her head bowed. Seeing the girl’s ears turning red, she mentally face palmed at her daughter’s lack of a filter.
Hearing her mother’s words, Li Yan belatedly realized her blunder. She quickly waved her hands and explained to the girl, “No, I didn’t mean it like that. I’m just clumsy with words, please don’t be angry…”
Lin Yishu looked up. At some point, tears had pooled in her eyes. She bit her lip and whispered, “It’s okay, I don’t mind.”
Li Yan was dumbfounded.
Stunned by how quickly that face could change expressions.
Seeing this, Li Chunmei gave her daughter a dirty look and quickly changed the subject. “By the way, dear, what’s your name? This is the first time our Yanyan has ever brought a friend home. How did you… how did you two meet?”
She hesitated slightly at the end.
In truth, Li Chunmei’s intuition told her that the girl in front of her wasn’t her daughter’s friend.
The girl was so beautiful, her skin looked delicate, clearly not someone from the surrounding villages. Looking at her clothes, especially those leather shoes, they definitely weren’t cheap.
Moreover, who comes to visit at this hour of the morning? Especially when her daughter had just finished a night shift.
Li Chunmei immediately suspected that the girl had encountered some trouble and had been rescued by her daughter. Not wanting to ask too bluntly, she could only phrase it vaguely.
Unexpectedly, before the girl could respond, her daughter began acting fidgety, as if she had something difficult to say. “Mom, Grandma, uh… I need to tell you something. This matter, well, it’s both big and small, simple yet not complex, complex yet not simple. Anyway, it’s just how it is. It might be a bit sudden, but I really hadn’t thought about it much before…”
Li Chunmei went from listening intently with a look of vigilance to rolling her eyes. She said crossly, “You brat, what on earth are you trying to say? You’re babbling so much nonsense without getting to the point, you’re worrying me to death.”
Li Yan was screaming internally.
She hadn’t expected to “come out” so suddenly! Couldn’t she say a few extra words to give herself a buffer?!
Wait, in an ABO world, does this even count as “coming out”? Theoretically, an Alpha/Omega pairing is the most normal match possible…
Li Yan’s mind wandered off into a wild tangent, her thoughts drifting who knows where.
When she snapped back to reality, she saw that everyone in the family except her, was looking at the girl opposite her with faces full of heartbreak.
Li Yan: “?”
Did something happen while she was zoning out?
Xu Xiufen went as far as to directly take the girl’s hand. “Child, don’t be afraid. Our family is made of good people. Just stay here with peace of mind. If you need anything, just tell our Yanyan. No one will dare bully you again.”
“How can there be parents like that in this world?” Li Chunmei sighed in disbelief. Looking at the girl’s delicate face and slender frame, she sighed again and hurried into the inner room. She quickly brought out a cotton padded jacket and draped it over the girl while saying, “Oh, you must have been freezing on the way, right? Look at these clothes you’re wearing, so thin it’s unbearable. Your face is so pale from the cold. Quick, drink some water to warm up.”
After fussing over her, she didn’t forget to curse, “Those god-forsaken human traffickers! They should all be taken out and shot. They’re nothing but animals hurting people! Who knows what kind of immoral bastards they are, not thinking about working hard every day, but thinking about doing these wicked deeds…”
Li Can also hurried over and stuffed her hand warmer toward her. “Sister Yishu, you must be very cold. This warmer still has some heat, take it to warm up. I’ll change the water for you once it cools down.”
Lin Yishu felt somewhat overwhelmed by the warmth of the elder’s hand. She looked up and met those gazes filled with tenderness, and for a moment, an unfamiliar sensation washed over her heart.
She couldn’t quite describe what it was; she only felt that her body seemed much warmer than before.
It was strange. These people were clearly pitying her, yet uncharacteristically, she didn’t feel the slightest bit of resentment.
Under the watchful eyes of the family, the corners of her lips slowly curved upward, finally revealing a sincere smile.
“Thank you.”
