- Chapter 37 - What’s So Improper About It?
As Qiao Sanghe finished her answer, the tense atmosphere in the room finally eased. The surrounding chill also seemed to dissipate slightly. The pen, which had eerily come to a standstill, began moving again—clearly acknowledging that her answer was correct.
None of the other guests had expected Qiao Sanghe to get it right. If it had been them, they likely would’ve been stumped. After all, everyone’s attention had been focused on identifying the killer; who would notice something so trivial?
Even if they had noticed, it wasn’t something they’d consciously remember. That she answered correctly spoke volumes about her attention to detail.
Qiao Sanghe was secretly grateful. If it wasn’t for Yu Wanyin’s reminder, she might’ve become the first guest eliminated as soon as the show started.
Though everyone was still anxious, the game continued. The group asked the spirit a few more questions, and they eventually narrowed the suspect down to a tour bus driver who had led a group up the mountain that day. It turned out that the two female university students had been killed by this driver. The motive: lust. Secluded in the wilderness with no one else around, the victims had become easy prey.
The production team soon announced that the guests had successfully solved the case and identified the killer. Each participant in the spirit-summoning game was awarded 1,000 points. However, if a guest was eliminated, their accumulated points would transfer to the next remaining participant. This rule meant that answering the spirit’s questions correctly was critical to staying in the game.
After the announcement, everyone felt the pressure intensify. No one wanted to be eliminated. But if the spirit kept asking the same kind of nitpicky questions like the one Qiao Sanghe got, over half of them were bound to be kicked out.
Before they had time to dwell on it, the second round of the spirit-summoning game began. Since the guests had received answers from the spirit, they now had to pay the price.
The atmosphere once again turned tense. No one felt confident about being able to answer the spirit’s questions. Even Qiao Sanghe’s earlier success had felt more like sheer luck than anything else—no one could be that lucky every time.
The spirit-controlled pen began to move again, sketching erratic lines across the paper. It randomly selected a participant, and the room was filled with suffocating anticipation, more intense than the first round.
This time, the pen stopped in front of Hu Xueqi.
Both she and her partner Liu Chu looked visibly uneasy. As a couple, neither wanted the other to be chosen. But the rules were the rules—there was no backing out, only pushing forward.
The spirit’s question appeared:
“Before entering this room, how many staff members did you see?”
Hu Xueqi furrowed her brows in thought. Honestly, this question was just like the one Qiao Sanghe had gotten: a tiny detail no one would’ve thought to remember. She tried to recall the moment quickly.
She definitely saw staff members—but was it three or four?
Liu Chu also looked anxious, silently helping her partner recall the scene. The two exchanged quick thoughts and ultimately mouthed their final guess: three.
“Three?” Hu Xueqi said aloud.
As soon as the words left her mouth, the pen suddenly froze, then jerked with violent, chaotic energy. A suffocating dread filled the room. The atmosphere had gone from tense to outright terrifying—as if the spirit had been gravely offended.
The production team made the announcement: Hu Xueqi had answered incorrectly.
There had actually been four staff members who had guided them into the room. The problem was, all the staff wore identical uniforms, making them easy to overlook. Small details like this were meant to test the guests’ observational skills.
It was as if time stood still. The elimination was swift and irreversible.
Liu Chu’s face darkened. Though she inherited Hu Xueqi’s points, what use were they if her partner had been eliminated? Still, there was nothing she could do. All she could do now was proceed with caution and try her best not to get eliminated herself.
What followed was a repeated pattern: watch the crime video, then play the spirit-summoning game.
The guests gradually began to understand the kind of questions the spirit would ask. From their initial nervousness, they slowly developed coping strategies. Still, as the game progressed, contestants continued to be eliminated. The spirit’s questions were just too specific and deliberately difficult.
After six hours of gameplay, only two guests remained: Qiao Sanghe and Yu Wanyin. Together, they had amassed 16,000 points, far ahead of the next closest contestant.
[Comment] “Qiao Sanghe and Yu Wanyin’s memory is unreal. If I didn’t see the playback, I wouldn’t have remembered a single answer.”
[Comment] “Those insanely tricky questions, and they still nailed every one—no wonder they’re in first place.”
Qiao Sanghe had been on edge the entire time. But with Yu Wanyin by her side, they’d managed to get through it—every correct answer thanks to her careful reminders. What she hadn’t expected was that by the end of filming, they’d be the only two left standing.
The production team had been ruthless with this setup. They knew how human psychology worked—how easy it was to overlook minor details in a suspenseful environment. Plus, the game’s surroundings were subtly designed to misdirect attention. For most people, unless they intentionally focused on those details, answering the spirit’s questions correctly was nearly impossible.
But what intrigued Qiao Sanghe most was how Yu Wanyin had managed to answer every question with such precision. Hadn’t she been affected by the production team’s deliberate distractions? Her observational skills were astonishing. One might even think she was professionally trained in criminal investigation—but she clearly wasn’t.

Back from the filming site.
Qiao Sanghe finally gave in to her curiosity. She pulled Yu Wanyin aside and, in a whisper-soft tone filled with playful intimacy, asked:
“Come on, spill it. Just how did you manage to catch all those trivial details the spirit kept asking about? It’s like you had the answer sheet! I bet someone on tomorrow’s trending topics will say that. You didn’t just walk in there and do nothing but scan the room, did you? Weren’t you nervous at all?”
Yu Wanyin, seeing Qiao Sanghe so eager and animated, couldn’t help but smile. Her delicate and gentle features were tinged with a touch of playful charm. Those soft pink eyes, glistening like spring water, were impossible to look away from.
She lowered her head and gently kissed Qiao Sanghe’s blushing cheek before saying:
“As long as I’m with you, I’m too happy to feel nervous. I’m too excited just being near you—how could I possibly be anxious?”
Qiao Sanghe : “…”
“Be serious.”
Yu Wanyin smiled mischievously.
“What’s not serious about that?” Yu Wanyin replied with a smile.
Qiao Sanghe blinked, her breathing quickening. Her already delicate features were now flushed an even deeper shade of red.
