A Loyal Scumbag-A Who Became the Wife of the Goddess - Chapter 4
Chi Lengzhao lay back on the hospital bed, her mind a whirlwind of distress.
Trapped in the body of the cannon fodder villainess A, her wife wanted a divorce, and would later become the ruthless woman who would have her glands removed. Her stepmother and that spoiled younger brother would later conspire to kick her out of the family home. Her former sleazy friends would pile on the insults. She would end up wandering the streets, battered by bitter winds and cold rain. And if she wasn’t careful, she might even trigger an alternate scenario, leaping from a bridge…
No matter how Chi Lengzhao thought about it, there was no hope.
She sighed, tossing and turning as she mentally reviewed the novel’s plot. Weakened by blood loss, she soon drifted into an exhausted sleep. When she awoke again, dusk had settled in, the fading sunlight bathing the hospital room in a warm, amber glow.
Chi Lengzhao opened her eyes and sat up, staring blankly at the sunset.
“Miss, you’re awake! Would you like some water? Madam just sent over bird’s nest congee.”
Chi Lengzhao nodded numbly. “Just give me a glass of juice.”
Butler Zhou poured her a glass of orange juice.
The slightly tart juice flowed down her throat and into her heart, leaving a dryness in her mouth and a bitter ache in her chest.
Why was Butler Zhou still here? Why was this hospital room still here? Why was she still that cannon fodder villainess A?
If only this were all a dream…
“Take this bird’s nest congee to the Young Madam.”
“What about you, Miss?” Butler Zhou asked hesitantly. Although Miss Chi had always been kind to the Young Madam—visiting her as soon as she woke up and now even giving up her bird’s nest congee—this was the first time he’d ever seen her show such consideration to anyone. But Miss Chi was still ill and had lost so much blood; she was the one who needed to replenish her qi and blood the most.
“Go on, take it to the Young Madam,” Chi Lengzhao said. Even though my stepmother treats me poorly, constantly guarding against and scheming against me, her rival for the inheritance, she always maintains perfect outward courtesy. This bowl of bird’s nest congee was her way of showing attentiveness in front of Chi Jintang. It’s harmless.
“Butler Zhou, what would you like to eat? I’ll have Uncle Nian prepare it and send it over.”
“Why make it so complicated? Just order takeout.” Chi Lengzhao raised her phone and began ordering.
The original owner had ordered takeout before, and her purchase history showed a variety of cuisines: Chinese, Western, Japanese, Korean, spicy, and mild.
Chi Lengzhao ordered herself a lavish meal and three bubble teas—one for herself, one for Butler Zhou, and one for her wife, who was demanding a divorce.
Butler Zhou, carrying the bird’s nest congee, was about to leave when he remembered something. “Miss, Madam Shen came to see you earlier.”
Madam Shen? That’s Shen Zhixi’s mother, my future mother-in-law.
Chi Lengzhao hurriedly asked, “What did she say?”
“Nothing much. She saw you were sleeping, asked about your condition, and left. She should be in the Young Madam’s hospital room now.”
Chi Lengzhao seized every opportunity to win back Shen Zhixi’s favor. She snatched the thermos from Butler Zhou’s hand. “I’ll deliver it.”
If I’m nice to Shen Zhixi now, she might show mercy later and not have my glands removed. Who knows? If the Chi Family eventually kicks me out, I’ll still have Shen Zhixi’s influence to cling to, rather than ending up homeless and starving.
After all, she’s the radiant protagonist, destined to become the formidable CEO who rebuilds Meixi’s glory.
Investing in this relationship can’t go wrong.
“Xiaoxi, you got married yesterday. What exactly happened?” Mother Shen asked, holding her daughter’s hand in the hospital room. “Why is there a bloody gash on Xiaozhao’s head? And you even called an ambulance?”
Shen Zhixi kept her head lowered, remaining silent.
“You foolish child! When I went to see her earlier, she was still unconscious, her head swathed in bandages. The wound must be quite serious.”
Shen Zhixi gave a cold, monosyllabic “Mm,” remaining silent.
Mother Shen noticed her daughter’s uncharacteristic silence and sensed something was wrong. “What’s going on between you and Xiao Zhao? Weren’t you getting along so well before? Last night, did she… try to…”
Shen Zhixi’s face stiffened, then flushed crimson. A wave of humiliation, mingled with anger, nearly made her blurt out, “Chi Lengzhao is a monster! She tried to forcibly mark me!”
Just then, the door slammed open. Chi Lengzhao entered, carrying a bowl of bird’s nest congee, her smile warm and pleasant.
“Mom, you’re here! To see Xixi?” Chi Lengzhao casually used a nickname, “Xixi,” a term of endearment typically reserved for young lovers.
Mother Shen, seeing her “daughter-in-law,” smiled. “I came to check on you both. Xiao Zhao, how’s your head? Did Xixi get upset with you on your wedding day?”
“No, it was just a minor accident.” Chi Lengzhao’s smile remained natural as she gracefully began serving the bird’s nest congee.
In her own world, she’d navigated countless social and negotiation scenarios. Now, she treated Mother Shen like a VIP client she needed to win over.
“Don’t worry, Mom. I just bumped the back of my head. It’s nothing serious.”
“How did you bump your head?”
“I drank too much. Being able to marry Xixi is the blessing of several lifetimes of good fortune. I was so happy last night that I drank too much. While taking off my wedding dress, I tripped and happened to bump into the table.”
The corner of Shen Zhixi’s mouth twitched, but she didn’t expose the lie.
Mother Shen nodded, paused, and spoke with the wisdom of one who had experienced it all. “Being newlywed and young is no excuse for lack of restraint. There’s plenty of time for the future—when you want to have a little Alpha or Omega.”
Her daughter had been rushed to the hospital after losing control of her pheromones, unable to receive an Alpha’s mark and temporarily needing an Inhibitor. Meanwhile, her wife, a proper Alpha, had knocked herself out on their wedding night, naturally preventing the marking ceremony.
Before that, ahem, they must have been getting a little too intimate.
Mother Shen glanced at her daughter, seeing her flushed and embarrassed face. No wonder she hadn’t said a word earlier.
Chi Lengzhao divided the bird’s nest congee into two shallow bowls, handing one to Mother Shen. “Mom, thank you for coming. Please have some too.” Mother Shen smiled and accepted the bowl.
Chi Lengzhao placed the other bowl on the bedside table and moved to help Shen Zhixi sit up.
Unexpectedly, when Shen Zhixi saw Chi Lengzhao’s outstretched hand, she recoiled as if it were a venomous snake, her expression filled with loathing. She glared fiercely at Chi Lengzhao and snapped, “I can do it myself!”
Chi Lengzhao, forced to smooth things over, turned to Mother Shen and said, “Look, Mom, Xixi’s barely recovered and she’s already trying to be so strong.”
Once Shen Zhixi was settled, Chi Lengzhao carefully brought over the bowl of bird’s nest congee. “Xixi, you must be hungry.”
With her mother watching nearby, Shen Zhixi fought to suppress her loathing as she took the bowl. Their fingers brushed briefly, and she flinched away as if stung, the brief contact sending a shiver of revulsion through her.
Chi Lengzhao had never been so thoroughly reviled before. Her brows furrowed, and she lowered her voice. “I’m not a flood or a beast. You don’t need to be like this.”
Shen Zhixi rolled her eyes and hissed back, “You’re not a flood or a beast—you’re a clothed beast!”
Chi Lengzhao: “……”
Mother Shen, listening to their hushed whispers, glanced over the rim of her bowl. To her, it was just a young couple having a spat—her daughter rolling her eyes in exasperation, while the gentle Chi Lengzhao yielded to her every whim.
Before, Mother Shen hadn’t interacted much with Chi Lengzhao, but she’d heard the young woman had a terrible temper, was quick to anger, and had the spoiled demeanor of a pampered Miss—a difficult person to get along with.
Seeing her poised and courteous, and willing to yield to her daughter, Mother Shen was quite pleased with this “son-in-law.”
After finishing their congee, while Chi Lengzhao was out, Mother Shen took her daughter’s hand. “Xiao Xi, I can tell that Xiao Zhao is good to you. You must get along well with her. Remember, married life is different from living at home; don’t sulk and give her the cold shoulder over every little thing.”
Shen Zhixi frowned, about to say, “Mom, Chi Lengzhao isn’t what you think! She’s just putting on an act! She’s a monster in human skin, a disgusting hypocrite! I was blinded by her sweet talk and foolishly married her.”
The words “I want a divorce” were already at the tip of her tongue.
Mother Shen sighed. “Your father has been so worried lately, and you know how Meixi is doing. I originally refused the marriage alliance with the Chi family, afraid you’d be mistreated there. But seeing how well Xiao Zhao treats you now, I can rest a little easier.”
Shen Zhixi looked at the white hair at her mother’s temples. Despite deliberate dyeing, a few silver strands still peeked through the jet black, piercing her heart.
She closed her eyes and silently murmured an acknowledgment.
She had only married Chi Lengzhao yesterday. The wedding was grand and lavish, attended by all the prominent figures of Haibin. The media had gone wild, and the wedding of Haibin’s first Omega had instantly trended nationwide.
If news of a divorce surfaced just a day after the wedding, both families would become the laughingstock of Haibin, perhaps even the entire country. The Chi family’s wrath would be fierce, and who knew what elaborate schemes they might devise for revenge? But what worried Shen Zhixi most was the fear that her father, unable to withstand the shock, might suffer a heart attack.
This marriage wouldn’t be easy to dissolve.
A bitter ache filled Shen Zhixi’s heart, her eyes stinging as she bit her lip fiercely, determined not to cry.
Mother Shen patted her daughter’s back. “Little Zhao treats you well, and the Chi family is willing to help. Meixi will recover soon, and your father can finally rest easy.”
This time, Shen Zhixi couldn’t hold back her tears. “Mom, don’t worry. Even if the Chi family doesn’t help, I can support Dad and Meixi.”
“Silly child, it’s not that simple. When times are good, everyone is a friend. But when trouble strikes, it’s already generous if they don’t kick you while you’re down. Alas, everyone is too busy sweeping the snow from their own doorstep. You’re an Omega. You don’t need to work so hard. Just focus on being Little Zhao’s wife. Leave Meixi’s affairs to your father.”
Mother Shen held traditional views, firmly believing that an Omega needed a reliable partner to ensure a secure future.
“Mmm…” Shen Zhixi’s eyes reddened as she threw herself into her mother’s arms.
The tears of regret, hurt, and humiliation she had been holding back finally spilled over, streaming down her cheeks for her parents and for herself.
Outside the door, Chi Lengzhao stood with two cups of hot milk tea, silently observing the scene. Her hand slowly released the doorknob. Turning away, she padded softly down the hall, retreating into the distance.
As dusk settled in, the last rays of the setting sun began to fade, the final streaks of twilight disappearing.
Chi Lengzhao leaned against the rooftop railing, gazing at the fading sunset. Suddenly, she shouted, “Mom, I miss you so much! Are you doing well there? I’m fine! Don’t worry about me!”
Bathed in the fading sunlight, Chi Lengzhao looked toward the horizon, her face glistening with tears.
In the tearful light, her smile was sweet and pure, like that of an innocent child.
In this world, no one knew that her mother had died of illness when she was just a child.
At the age of nine, she had lost her mother, lost the warmth of her mother’s embrace forever.
