- Chapter 1 - I Heard You Also Differentiated Into an Alpha?
At the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, the crescent moon quietly climbed onto the treetops. The white gauze curtains appeared light and airy as they fluttered in the wind. Moonlight filtered through the curtains and cast an eerie glow onto the pure white marble floor.
A girl was lying on the large bed in the room. Her sleeping face closely resembled a porcelain doll. Cold sweat beaded on her forehead, and though her eyes were tightly shut, her eyeballs rolled incessantly beneath her lids.
After a short while, the girl suddenly opened her eyes and sat up. She clutched her heart tightly and took two deep breaths. Upon realizing it was just a dream, she let out a sigh of relief. “What was that? Why would I have a dream like that?”
She had actually dreamed that her best friend died a tragic death because of her.
She shook her head, noticed her hand was still gripping her chest, and murmured to herself, “It turns out that clutching your heart before sleep really does cause nightmares.”
Turning her head, she realized she had forgotten to close the window before bed. She hurriedly climbed out of bed and shut it. After tossing and turning for another hour, she finally managed to fall back asleep.
September arrived with the golden autumn school season, and the campus began to bustle with activity.
A cool breeze brought the scent of osmanthus and swept up the golden fallen leaves on the ground. As class time approached, only a few scattered students hurried along the paths. In the plaza in front of the school, a small fountain surged beside a flower bed where two female students sat in school skirts, holding brooms.
One girl rested her chin against the handle of her broom, looking completely distracted as if her soul had left her body. The other girl sighed repeatedly, glancing at her friend with a look that suggested she wanted to speak but held back.
Yu Ning finally noticed her hesitation. She shifted her broom and turned toward her friend, speaking slowly. “Yiyi, why do you keep sighing?”
The person called Yiyi was Yu Ning’s best friend, Sun Yiyi. The two had grown up together, sharing everything since childhood, and were virtually inseparable.
Sun Yiyi stomped her broom on the ground. “Why do you think I’m sighing? How many times is this that you’ve been punished with sweeping duty this month?”
Yu Ning scratched her head awkwardly. “Only about fifteen or sixteen times.”
“Fifteen or sixteen times! Ningning, have you looked at the calendar? Today is the sixteenth. That means since school started this month, you haven’t taken a single day off from sweeping. Even the janitors get at least one day off after working six. What about you? You’ve straight up stolen their jobs.”
Sun Yiyi thought this would provoke a sense of shame, but to her surprise, Yu Ning asked in return, “If I stole their work, do they still get paid?”
Sun Yiyi didn’t react for a moment and nodded honestly. “Of course they do.”
Yu Ning sighed in relief. “That’s good then. I didn’t expect that I was actually helping people.”
Sun Yiyi was speechless. Forget it, she was beyond help.
Yu Ning knew Sun Yiyi meant well, so she put down her broom and gently pulled on her friend’s sleeve, speaking in a coaxing, spoiled tone. “I know, I know. But you can’t blame me. Almost every day a new Omega differentiates in this school, and the moment they do, they go and try to seduce Yanqing. As her official fiancée, how could I possibly endure that?”
Sun Yiyi rolled her eyes. “You know you’re the official fiancée, so don’t you think your behavior is embarrassing?”
Yu Ning answered without a second thought. “It’s not embarrassing. I’m just asserting my sovereignty. Those people deserve to be hit.”
In this girls’ school where Alphas were already scarce, a high-quality Alpha like Lin Yanqing drove all the differentiated Omegas wild. As her official fiancée, Yu Ning felt she had to guard her at all times.
Sun Yiyi had discussed this issue with Yu Ning over a hundred times. She couldn’t understand how a girl who used to be quite clever had turned into such a complete “love-brain” after getting engaged to Lin Yanqing.
“You’ve been differentiated for several months now, so why haven’t I differentiated yet? You’re only two days older than me,” Yu Ning muttered.
Sun Yiyi knew what Yu Ning was worried about and patted her shoulder to comfort her. “Don’t be afraid. You definitely won’t differentiate into an Alpha. At worst, you’ll be a Beta like me.”
“No, no, no! I don’t want to be an ordinary Beta. I want to become a beautiful Omega.”
The “ordinary Beta” Sun Yiyi was at a loss for words.
“Fine, I’ll just treat that as the mindless talk of a child.” Sun Yiyi knew what Yu Ning feared. After seeing a sweet, soft girl differentiate into an Alpha, Yu Ning had fallen into deep anxiety. She worried that if she also became an Alpha, her engagement would be in jeopardy. After all, a condition of the engagement between the two families was that if they differentiated into the same gender attribute, the engagement would be void.
Lin Yanqing had differentiated into an Alpha six months ago. This meant Yu Ning had to differentiate into an Omega or a Beta to keep the engagement valid. To ensure she didn’t end up like that “soft girl” who became an Alpha, Yu Ning had specifically asked what that girl ate and where she went before her differentiation, just so she could avoid those things entirely.
In Sun Yiyi’s eyes, Yu Ning’s behavior was both foolish and heartbreaking.
“Relax. You’re so cute, how could the heavens possibly turn you into an Alpha? Don’t worry.”
Yu Ning nodded distractedly in agreement.
A moment later, a shout came from the distance. The two looked over to see Xie Ru running toward them. She stopped in front of them, clutching her chest and pointing toward the right, panting heavily. “The playground! Lin… Lin Yanqing and Su Yien are… they’re fighting!”
The moment she heard Lin Yanqing’s name, Yu Ning’s expression became serious. She knew Lin Yanqing was a “hot commodity” at this school and that protecting her was a massive job. She couldn’t be by Lin Yanqing’s side every second, so she had recruited several followers to watch over her and report back, especially regarding any “flowers or grass” (admirers) lingering around her.
She had heard the name Su Yien long ago. Not long ago, Su Yien had differentiated into a high-quality Alpha just like Lin Yanqing. Consequently, the school split into two factions: one believed Lin Yanqing was the school’s top Alpha, while the other argued for Su Yien. The support was evenly matched.
If you asked Yu Ning, how could Su Yien even be compared to Lin Yanqing? Lin Yanqing had the looks, the family background, and the grades. Su Yien, on the other hand, was rebellious, unreasonable, and moody. She caused trouble every day and kept the school in chaos. Forget competing for the title of top Alpha; people like her should be kicked out of school to restore peace to Pride Girls’ High.
With these thoughts, Yu Ning and Sun Yiyi rushed toward the playground. The first class of the afternoon was Physical Education. Classes One and Two shared the same teacher, who had merged the classes for convenience. It was perfectly logical for Su Yien and Lin Yanqing, who were in Class Two, to cross paths.
“I knew it. Su Yien is just jealous of Yanqing. Why else would she always find trouble with my Yanqing?”
The distance from the front plaza to the playground wasn’t short. To arrive quickly, Yu Ning used all her strength to run. As the playground came into view, she stopped to catch her breath and spoke to Sun Yiyi.
Yu Ning practiced dance, so her stamina was decent. Sun Yiyi, however, could barely keep up. She was out of breath and found it difficult to even exhale, let alone answer.
Sun Yiyi reached out a hand, wanting Yu Ning to pull her along, but Yu Ning didn’t hear a response and assumed Sun Yiyi agreed with her. After resting for two seconds, Yu Ning sprinted toward the playground again.
Sun Yiyi stood alone. She silently withdrew her hand and looked back at the path they had traveled. They had run at least 1,200 meters, equivalent to three laps on a track. It was more than she had ever run for a PE exam. She wondered if she had owed Yu Ning money in a past life, which was why she was being tortured like this in this one.
“Wait for me!”
Yu Ning could no longer hear Sun Yiyi’s cries. She had already reached the playground, which was surrounded by a dense crowd of people. Class hadn’t started yet, and the PE teacher was still in the office. The scene wasn’t as exaggerated as Xie Ru had described; the two weren’t actually fighting.
Lin Yanqing stood in a defensive position on the basketball court. Her chin-length short hair fluttered gracefully in the wind. Her eyelids were lowered, and her lips were pressed into a straight line. Yu Ning knew this was a sign that Lin Yanqing was angry.
In contrast, Su Yien stood leisurely with one hand in her pocket while the other spun a basketball on her fingertips. Her hair was in a ponytail tied with a black-and-white headband, and her expression was one of playful indifference.
Someone shouted, “Yu Ning is here!” and the crowd grew restless. Upon seeing her, everyone collectively stepped aside to clear a path.
Very good—it felt like the aura of the “legal wife.”
Her current position formed an isosceles triangle with the two of them.
“Ningning, I finally caught up to you,” Sun Yiyi gasped, arriving and bending over to breathe.
After a couple of seconds, Sun Yiyi looked at the situation. The surrounding students were all staring at her. Based on the current atmosphere, her position was very awkward. Without waiting for Yu Ning to speak, Sun Yiyi silently retreated to the side.
Su Yien clearly didn’t quite understand the situation, but she had caught Lin Yanqing’s momentary lapse in focus. Su Yien glanced at the newcomer, then raised an eyebrow and asked Lin Yanqing in a playful tone, “Do you like her?”
That single sentence silenced the noisy crowd. Yu Ning also held her breath, waiting for the answer. Lin Yanqing was reserved by nature and had never publicly stated her feelings for Yu Ning.
Is she feeling shy?
Just as Yu Ning was about to speak to bail Lin Yanqing out of the situation, she heard a cold, emotionless voice. “I don’t like her.”
There wasn’t a hint of hesitation.
If Lin Yanqing had said this to one of her rivals, Yu Ning would have been overjoyed. Unfortunately, the object of that sentence was her.
Yu Ning could even hear laughter coming from the crowd. Unsurprisingly, they were mocking her for her unrequited affection.
Yu Ning felt dejected for only a second before looking at the person who asked the question. Strangely, the person who should have laughed the most didn’t laugh at all. Su Yien’s eyes held a hint of pity. Her next sentence caused the faint mockery in the crowd to instantly amplify.
To the sound of the basketball hitting the ground, her lazy voice rang out: “Makes sense. Who would like a shriveled bean sprout like this who hasn’t even differentiated?”
