Did Scumbag A Get Divorced Today? - Chapter 40.1
Upon hearing her words, Sui Yu’s expression darkened. She lowered her eyes and asked in a cold tone, “What are you talking about?”
The woman’s face no longer held the facade of frailty. Instead, she spoke with a hint of provocation, “What I’m talking about—you should know very well, shouldn’t you?”
Sui Yu’s gaze turned even more somber as she stared at her. Suddenly, she grabbed the woman and dragged her into an empty conference room. After slamming the door shut, she questioned harshly, “Who are you really, and what is your goal?!”
The woman smiled with teasing confidence and composure. “I’m not going to tell you who I am. What if you try to get revenge later?” she said, winking at Sui Yu.
Watching her demeanor shift, Sui Yu caught a flaw in her words and replied in a low voice, “You claim we can’t escape, so why are you worried about revenge?”
The woman blinked innocently and said, “I just don’t like making things sound so final, that’s all.”
Sui Yu let out a cold snort, though a sense of unease welled up inside her. This woman, the man at the club—more and more unknown forces seemed to be surfacing.
“You know about my situation?” Sui Yu asked. She was curious whether these people knew that the soul within this body had been replaced.
The woman found a chair, sat down, and arrogantly propped her feet up on the conference table. With a playful smile, she said, “Which part are you talking about? That you’ve learned the truth about this world, or that you managed to escape its control through some trick?”
Listening to her, Sui Yu began to suspect the woman didn’t actually know she had come from another world. But the woman’s calm, cheerful expression made her unsure—perhaps she did know, and was simply toying with her, forcing her to guess.
Sui Yu didn’t respond right away. After a long silence, the woman couldn’t help but ask, “Aren’t you curious why I approached you?”
“Why should I ask? Would you actually answer me?” Besides, hadn’t she already asked that when they first entered the room?
“You could try asking. Who knows—if I’m in a good mood, I might just tell you.” The woman threw another flirtatious glance at Sui Yu.
Sui Yu sneered coldly. This woman acted like a god looking down on insignificant ants, amused by their struggle.
She detested that feeling.
Before she could speak again, the conference room door suddenly swung open. Shen Jueshu stood outside, eyes cold as she looked at them.
The woman gave a low whistle at her appearance, smirking. “No wonder I couldn’t affect you. Seems like you’ve awakened too.”
Ignoring her words, Shen Jueshu stepped inside and stood beside Sui Yu. She quickly scanned Sui Yu to confirm she was unharmed, then turned to meet the woman’s mocking gaze with a calm expression. “I’ve awakened. So, what are you going to do about it?”
“Also, I suggest you rein in that attitude of yours. I’d really like to know what kind of being you are. When you die, will it be just the body, or will your consciousness perish with it as well?”
“How about letting me test it?”
“You—!” The woman’s face shifted, choked by Shen Jueshu’s words. After regaining her composure, she said, “Even if you two have awakened, you must realize this world is now a fully functioning microcosm. If you act out like this, even as the female lead, you’d be breaking the law.”
Shen Jueshu’s expression remained unchanged. “I know. So after killing you, I’ll atone with my life.”
“I’m also curious to see what happens after I die. Will it be true death, or another rebirth?”
She stared coolly into the woman’s increasingly flustered eyes. Shen Jueshu truly was curious—if she were to die, would that be the end, or would she awaken once more?
“Lunatic! You’re a fucking lunatic!” the woman suddenly screamed in anger. But despite her outburst, she did seem to rein in that arrogant demeanor, glaring at them resentfully.
Clearly, Shen Jueshu’s earlier words had struck a nerve.
Sui Yu stood beside Shen Jueshu, heart trembling. That moment had been both stunning and terrifying. As the woman said—she really did seem like a madwoman.
How could someone treat life and death so lightly?
In that moment, Sui Yu saw the Shen Jueshu before her completely merge with the later version in the story—darkened, deranged.
She couldn’t forget that Shen Jueshu’s kindness toward her now didn’t erase the fact that she had once endured suffering so great it warped her very soul.
Eventually, the three of them sat down. Shen Jueshu looked coldly at the woman across from her and asked, “Since you already know we’ve awakened, what exactly do you want?”
The woman gazed at Shen Jueshu’s calm demeanor and couldn’t help but applaud. “Very few in your situation can remain this composed in front of me,” she said. Then she turned to Sui Yu and added, “And after awakening, you’ve both adjusted to the truth so quickly.”
“You know, most people—once they realize they’re just characters in a book—choose to end their lives.”
Her words instantly brought to mind the original characters’ mothers. Could their deaths also have been due to awakening, unable to bear the truth?
Shen Jueshu didn’t react to the praise. Instead, she asked again, “Your goal.”
It couldn’t be that the woman had come just to confirm their awakening. If that was all, she would’ve noticed from the moment the plot began to deviate.
The woman’s expression finally turned serious. “My goal, of course, is to restore everything to its rightful course. Otherwise, all the effort the author put into creating this world, all the painstakingly crafted plotlines—wouldn’t it all be ruined? Would that be fair to the author?”
Sui Yu couldn’t hold back and asked, “But would that be fair to the characters?!”
The woman looked at her and smiled. “But without the author, there would be no world—no you. Given that, what right do you have to talk about fairness?”
“In fact, you would have lived your entire lives without ever realizing you were merely characters created by the author.”
Sui Yu’s chest heaved with fury, her eyes blazing with fire.
“I admit it—without the author, this world wouldn’t exist,” Shen Jueshu nodded, then met the woman’s eyes and countered, “But what you’re describing only applies to those who never discover the truth. Since we’ve awakened, why can’t we choose how we want to live?”
“Why must awakened individuals follow the plot as dictated by the author?”
For a moment, the woman was caught off guard by Shen Jueshu’s calm yet sharp question. After a pause, she replied, “Our purpose is to preserve the storyline as written by the author. That is our duty.”
A mocking smile tugged at Shen Jueshu’s lips. “And how exactly do you plan to force us back into the plotline?”
“Because we’re no longer going to just sit back and surrender.”
The woman gazed quietly at Shen Jueshu. “At first, we thought maybe the deviation was caused by some unexpected accident. We didn’t classify you as awakened individuals.”
“Oh? Was it because there were so few awakened cases that you simply forgot such a possibility existed?” Sui Yu’s lips curled into a cold smile.
The woman shrugged nonchalantly. “As you said.”
Watching her, Shen Jueshu suddenly chuckled softly. “I suppose you must be out of options now, aren’t you? Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here wasting so many words on us.”
“My guess is, you’ve been trying to steer us back to the original storyline through manipulation, haven’t you?” Shen Jueshu’s tone was calm. From Gu Ying’s attempts to influence Sui Yu, to this woman’s approach—every move had been aimed at subtly pushing Sui Yu back to her original state, so she would once again harm Shen Jueshu.
The woman couldn’t help but applaud, a hint of admiration in her voice. “You’re truly clever. I dare say the author didn’t even capture a tenth of your intelligence.”
