Li Chu, a highly decorated and battle-hardened general of the dynasty, took one look at the newly appointed tanhua (the scholar who ranks third in the imperial examination), Wen Shu, on the day she returned to the capital in triumph.
When the Emperor asked what reward she desired, Li Chu pointed directly at Wen Shu and requested to take her as her spouse.
Wen Shu: “Wait, what?!”
Wen Shu has spent years disguised as a man, bearing the heavy expectations of her entire family. She studied diligently for decades, finally standing in the imperial court to bring honor and revitalization to her kin. Since entering the Hanlin Academy, she has remained disciplined, working conscientiously and without complaint. Her life was peaceful and content, and the work at the academy suited her gentle, reserved personality perfectly.
That was until the day a flamboyant general in red armor returned to the capital. With a smile in her phoenix eyes, she glanced at Wen Shu and declared aloud,
“I want to take Hanlin Wen as my spouse.”
Wen Shu: “…”
The general is perfect in every way, except for her judgment. Out of all the male scholars in the Hanlin Academy, she just had to pick her, the fake one.
The general is stubborn and forceful. With no room to resist and the imperial decree already issued, Wen Shu has no choice but to bite the bullet and accept the marriage. She had already planned out how to handle their wedding night: she would claim to be physically “incompetent,” and if the general insisted, she would find other ways to satisfy her.
To her surprise, as soon as the veil was lifted, before she could even speak, Li Chu pinned her to the bed and used those “other ways” to thoroughly satisfy her instead.
Rubbing her aching waist, Wen Shu grumbled to herself,
“Does the General actually enjoy my female identity, or is she dissatisfied with it?”
Li Chu: “I am more than satisfied.”
