Xie Xuning was born into a family of criminal investigators. Having followed and learned from his father since childhood, he possessed an eidetic memory.

When he was six years old, a brutal family massacre that shocked the entire nation occurred within his father’s jurisdiction. He and his close friend, Fang Xiting, witnessed the crime scene through two sawed-off window security bars. The victims’ eyes, which remained open even in death, left a severe psychological trauma on the young Xiao Xie and Xiao Fang. Due to the limitations of investigative technology in those early years, the clues went cold, the screening process hit a bottleneck, and the case ultimately became a cold case. The victims died with unavenged grievances, while the true culprit remained at large.

It was from that moment on that Xie Xuning and Fang Xiting swore to crack this case. But… the person Fang Xiting hated most in this life was Xie Xuning.

The two of them were originally childhood friends who were very close. However, Xie Xuning, a complete menace, insisted on outshining him in absolutely everything.

Fang Xiting was a notoriously competitive workaholic—serious, hardworking, and diligent—yet he could never beat the idle and loose Xie Xuning on any exam. Even in the cops and robbers games that children loved to play, as long as Xie Xuning was involved, Fang Xiting would lose. Unable to swallow his pride, Fang Xiting pushed himself even harder. If Xie Xuning went to school at seven in the morning, he would wake up at six. If Xie Xuning became the study rep, he would run for class president.

Eventually, both of them were admitted to the National Police University together, and after graduation, they joined the Yunjing Municipal Public Security Bureau at the same time. Shoulder to shoulder, they set out to investigate and crack cases.

Until one day, a sudden conflict erupted.

Fang Xiting pointed at Xie Xuning’s nose and snapped, “You just have to target me, don’t you?”

Who would have thought that after two seconds of silence, the man across from him would reply in exasperation:

“Targeting you?”

“I fucking like you.”
