Shen Guanfu’s repeated rebirths are the “cause” planted by Li Shangyuan.
Shen Guanfu’s repeated failures to ascend are the “consequence” of that same cause.
After countless twists and turns, Shen Guanfu, who only ever cared about achieving immortality, finds his Daoist heart wavering—all because of his own disciple.
Shen Guanfu, Peak Master of the Wu Shang Sect, is known not just for his breathtaking appearance and ethereal grace, but for being a peerless genius, the person in the entire cultivation world most likely to ascend to immortality.
Until he fails.
Shen Guanfu, the cultivation fanatic: “Wait, me? Failing ascension?!”
Fortunately, someone or something, gives him a “rebirth cheat code,” allowing him to try again. After failing, dying, and being reborn time and time again, Shen Guanfu looks up at the sky and screams in frustration.
Shen Guanfu: “Is this supposed to be happening?”
Heavenly Dao: “Oh, forgot to tell you. Who told you not to ask sooner?”
Shen Guanfu: “…”
Shen Guanfu: “So, there’s some kind of ‘Child of Destiny’ in this world?”
Heavenly Dao: “Yep.”
Shen Guanfu: “And everyone else has to wait for him to ascend first?!”
Heavenly Dao: “Yep.”
Shen Guanfu: “…”
Shen Guanfu stares at this “Child of Destiny,” refusing to open his eyes, praying it’s just a hallucination.
Shen Guanfu: “His aptitude is practically non-existent. Are you sure he’s the child of destiny?”
Heavenly Dao: “Yep.”
(Shen Guanfu clenches his fist, fighting the urge to punch the Heavenly Dao into oblivion.)
Determined to ascend, Shen Guanfu reluctantly takes the “Child of Destiny” as his disciple, piling pills and elixirs on him in hopes of speeding things up. After more than a decade, he realizes he’s just wasted his time.
“Get out of here! Go to the mortal realm and sharpen your wits to advance, you blockhead!”
But worried, Shen Guanfu secretly dons a disguise and follows him.
Li Shangyuan is having a headache. He doesn’t understand why his Master would adopt a new identity just to accompany him on his journey—until he discovers a secret.
His Master seems to… like him.
Li Shangyuan: “Does Shizun have some kind of role-playing fetish? Whatever, I’ll play along. But isn’t sharing one sword a bit… suggestive?”
Shen Guanfu: “You idiot, just get on! Stop wasting time!”
Li Shangyuan: “Shizun, taking the demon core is fine, but why are you rubbing my palm? Why… why is he acting like this?”
Shen Guanfu: “Idiot, just give it here! Why are you holding it so tight?” (Grabs his hand forcefully)
Li Shangyuan: “Why is Shizun licking his lips while eating? Is he… is he trying to seduce me?!”
Shen Guanfu: “Idiot, this pastry is just sticky! It’s all over my mouth!”
Li Shangyuan finally concludes that his Master has long been deeply in love with him, only suppressing his feelings due to their teacher-disciple bond. Now, to keep him safe, his Master is even willing to hide his identity to accompany him…
Li Shangyuan: “Shizun has gone this far for me! I absolutely have to show him how I feel!”
(Li Shangyuan immediately writes his confession into a message talisman and sends it off.)
Shen Guanfu, sitting in meditation next door, receives the talisman and opens it.
Li Shangyuan: “Shizun, I love you!”
Shen Guanfu: “???”
